I would go a lot lighter with the fur, to bring out the scales. I think both the brown and the red are too close in color. Going darker might make him too dark. Maybe a much lighter brown? I’m not sure.
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I host the feedback lists, which are maintained by drag0nfeathers.

You could dry-brush a shade or two of gold over the high areas and let the darker antique accent the low areas, perhaps. Some use of lights to accentuate the shoulder and cheek could be good, too.
January 13, 2008 at 2:15 pm #596117The more I look at him the more I don’t like him so I’m gonna strip the paint off him and try again. If I need to I can order another red-eyed one after payday on Tuesday and hold onto this one for July’s Ruby.
January 22, 2008 at 2:29 am #596118Blargh! The PYOs seem to be laughing at me lately. I think I’ve fixed Garnet, but until it warms up enough that I can clearcoat it I can’t antique it. That’s all that remains (and a final clear coat after) to call it fiished. Sorry guys, no pictures until after.
Today I started in on a griffin that I was thinking might work for my swap piece. I had originally ordered it for something else before the swap and realized after it arrived that I got the wrong shade of blue eyes. When looking at some of the ideas my partner gave me I started thinking, “This could work.”
Wrong! Fortunately for me I had only basecoated him, and the paint was still fresh (only a few hours old) so after a quick shower he’s clean again and laughing at me as he fluffs his feathers dry. No I just have to wait until he’s fully dry before I try again.
Since he isn’t going to end up being my swap piece I went ahead and ordered it as well as a lavender-eyed Kirin for the February Amethyst Kirin. This one will be much easier to do compared to Garnet and I can’t wait for it to arrive. I’m hoping to finish Garnet and Amethyst before the start of February. I will of course be working on my swap piece at the same time … as well as the world traveler muse and graffiti kirin when they arrive.
January 22, 2008 at 3:06 am #596119Wow Peg!! You are busy!! Can’t wait to see pictures of Garnet and Amethyst. 😉
January 22, 2008 at 3:41 am #596120I tend to get bored easily, so I like having plenty of options open. Since it’s been too cold to clearcoat I’ve been spending a lot of time on my computer playing “Chocolatier 2 Secret Ingredients”. I even spent the $20 to get the full version after I finished the trial one. This was after buying a book on Friday and finishing it Sunday afternoon.
January 22, 2008 at 5:52 pm #596121*Sigh* Well Garnet just died a painful death. It got warm enough that I could spray it outside. I had the door propped open so I could bring it back inside to dry. My hands wobbled a little bit as I was turning to go through the door and Garnet fell of the tray I use to spray PYOs. Needless to say Garnet broke. Not a whole lot, but I don’t feel like repairing it so Garnet now resides in the trash can. I’ll try Garnet again much later in the year…like close to next January. I guess Garnet wasn’t meant to be just yet.
January 22, 2008 at 6:00 pm #596122Maybe antique the fur with a lighter brown close to tan, and the scales with the darker color? 😕
January 22, 2008 at 6:03 pm #596123That’s a shame about garnet…it sux to have done all that work for nothing:-/
January 22, 2008 at 6:06 pm #596124It does at that. But Garnet had been fighting me from day one, so in some ways its a relief that it broke and I don’t have to fight anymore.
January 22, 2008 at 9:21 pm #596125Poor Garnet!!! 🙁 Well, hopefully Garnet II will behave better. 😉
January 22, 2008 at 11:29 pm #596126Now, I notice, that my other reply was thwarted by a minute fast post that it was broke before I got my whole post done. 😯
Sorry to hear about the death of a Windstone, but maybe the next will be more what you want it to be. 😀January 23, 2008 at 7:40 pm #596127So sorry about Garnet. 🙁
January 24, 2008 at 6:30 am #596128Aw, I’m sorry, Pegasi. Better luck next time.
January 27, 2008 at 12:16 am #596129I’m definately having better luck with Amethyst than I did with Garnet. Here’s a progress shot. I’m debating on the fur color. I’m going back and forth between grey and a pale brown. I’ll probably let it sit over night and decide in the morning.
