As far as I know the peanuts we buy new are made from corn starch, or maybe potato starch and you can send them to the land-fill with a clean conscience, compost them or whatever you want, but we do sometimes use plastic peanuts that we receive in shipments.
So, if they are a different color, don’t dissolve, or don’t smell like food. I wouldn’t feed them to anything.
January 4, 2013 at 4:06 am #891039Thanks for the advice, into the compost they will go!
January 4, 2013 at 4:52 am #891043Heh. I didn’t realize they were biodegradable until my sister opened a Windstone I had gotten her as a gift and got really excited about them. She was like “Oh, water soluble packing peanuts!”, and then promptly ate one. My brother joined in and ate a few too. I just kind of stared at them for awhile…
January 4, 2013 at 5:22 am #891046It all makes sense now why I always thought that the packing peanuts smelled oddly appetizing. Like crackers, or popcorn or something!

I run a tiny eBay store, fritos…I mean packing peanuts are like GOLD in this house. If they didn’t cost so much to ship I would buy them from you guys!January 4, 2013 at 3:51 pm #891072My hubby swears they smell like Fritos. January 4, 2013 at 3:59 pm #891074If anyone ever needs packing peanuts I have 2 HUGE bags of them in my basement. You can HAVE them for the shipping cost. They are mixed bags though, some are the corn starchy ones and some are styrofoam collected from boxes of Windstones from here and ebay I have gotten throughout the years. If you happen to be in MA local pick up is also fine. *nods*

I never thought to look for peanuts there! Thanks, LIH!! Lately I’ve been giving my hubby the excuse “I need to buy a Windstone, I’m out of peanuts”, LOL.
January 4, 2013 at 4:27 pm #891078Seems like sound reasoning to me! 😉
January 4, 2013 at 4:51 pm #891081Haha yes, they are biodegradable, but I recommend against intentionally eating them, generally. They are not made on sanitary/food safe equipment as they are never meant to be consumed! I am not a clean freak by any stretch but I am not too keen on eating things that have been through the things the peanuts go through. I once received a box of them (not from windstone) that looked clean but was full of roaches once I started digging around.

ACK!!! You just had to tell me this. Now I’m itching and freaked out. 😀
January 4, 2013 at 6:27 pm #891088Please don’t let anyone eat them! I probably shouldn’t tell you guys this, but a couple times live mice have gotten into the peanut dispenser and poured out with the peanuts! (The mice weren’t hurt, and they were escorted outside)
Peanuts are NOT sanitary. We re-use synthetic peanuts too.
Ever put some acetone on a synthetic one? -Or lay a piece of sculpey on it?

Did you shake your head in amazement that you even had to tell us this? We are a bunch of loons, huh?

January 4, 2013 at 9:47 pm #891102I have to be very careful about unpacking in front of my dogs (I have 2 Cocker Spaniels) because they managed to sneak one (each) when i wasn’t looking and now they hop around like 4yr olds on Christmas morning whenever they see a Windstone package come in. They can’t understand why I freak out and try to fish the peanuts out of their mouths.
