We are going with a light cream on the ceiling and a slightly darker cream on the walls. Trim and wainscotting will be two tones of brown to mimick wood, and to match the bookcase we bought.
The hubby started using a different type of paint remover, and it seems to work a bit better than the first stuff did. We’ll work on it more tonight, so I’ll find out then. I’m still working at a temp job, so the hubby’s been doing it all. Go, Hubby! π
July 15, 2008 at 1:15 am #655082Sounds pretty!!! π
July 15, 2008 at 2:53 am #655083Well, I worked on it a little, but I think we started scraping too early. We are going to let it sit until tomorrow and see what it’s like then. Hubby will have to do it though. I’m back to work.
Edit: We’ve noticed a few layers of paint there: gold, white (enamel-type paint), orange, grey, tan, pink. That’s what we’ve figured out so far. Six layers. No wonder we can’t see any detail on the trim.
July 17, 2008 at 3:01 pm #655084After trying to scrape multiple layers of paint from the wainscotting, we’ve decided to do only the sections of the dining room that will show (It’s hard!). There are at least 6 layers on here. Here are some pictures of the attempt.
Under the dark mauve, there’s a light pink, under that, red. Under that, gold, white, and some sort of dark brown. Then there’s varnish on the wood that gets really sticky with the paint remover and cakes up everything. I would personally chose to leave the varnish on, but the paint remover has other ideas.

July 17, 2008 at 10:53 pm #655087The hubby says that there are at least 12 layers of paint there. The green bubbly stuff is the paint stripper.
July 17, 2008 at 10:58 pm #655088That’s alot of paint… π― π―
July 18, 2008 at 5:24 am #655089What they said. It looks like tons of work.
July 18, 2008 at 2:24 pm #655090π― π― Better you than me! π― π― That’s a lot of work! It’ll look great when it’s done π (I’m still stripping wallpaper π )

July 18, 2008 at 3:33 pm #655091I’m sure it will be beautiful when you are done though
July 18, 2008 at 4:53 pm #655092Looks good so far π As well as looking like a lot of hard work. It’s been 1.5 years, and we are still renovating my mother’s kitchen, so I feel your pain. Can’t wait to see how it looks when you finish.
July 18, 2008 at 6:01 pm #655093Looks like all your hard work is coming along nicely
July 19, 2008 at 2:25 pm #655094I worked more on scraping the same spot in the pictures last night and found a few more layers… there’s a green and a dark brown in there too. I still need to put on at least one more coat of paint stripper before that section is done.
This is going to take forever! π₯
