Thanks everyone!!!
It’s actually turning out to be a much sweeter job then I thought! It’s about 10C in the cooler, and with 2 shirts, a light layering sweater, a hoodie, and a pant liner… I was COMFORTABLE as heck for the 7 hours I was in there.
But man is it messy. You don’t want me to describe in detail what I see in there….. you might never want to eat ground beef again (what I do isn’t so bad, I test the temperature and fat content of ground beef to make sure it’s within spec, and also do microbial counts at the end of the day). I, on the other hand…. am not disturbed by it at all. I actually thought I would be, but it’s not so bad.
March 4, 2010 at 3:03 am #787085It’s sorta like that fast food job you had when you were younger…(Example only ofcourse) If you told half your friends what happens there, they wouldn’t eat there either. I worked at Wendy’s, and trust me inglorious as it was, I still will eat chili from there, where I know people who won’t touch it because they know how it is made. 😆
March 4, 2010 at 4:00 am #787086My Bachelor’s degree is in Animal Science… so yeh, I know what you mean about not wanting to know. 😆
But I always thought the sausage machine was kinda neat… in a weird, creepy kind of way. 😈
March 4, 2010 at 1:37 pm #787087My bachelor’s wasn’t animal science (agricultural journalism instead), but since I started out Pre-Vet in a college of agriculture I took lots of crazy classes. I still take my revenge on chickens (for having to take a poultry science class) by eating them whenever I can. 👿

REVENGE ON CHICKENS!!!! LOL! 😆
March 4, 2010 at 2:54 pm #787089Both my parents come from farmer families, so I know what goes into preparing meat. Heck, I can skin, gut and chop up a rabbit; I’ve seen my mom do it often enough!
A lot of people don’t realize that chicken breast comes from an actual animal that needs to be butchered, ground beef from a cow, etc. yet that’s just the way it is. In fact, if people realized the work that goes into preparing meat, they may not gripe as much about its cost.
Good for you if you’re doing good. It’s a job, and it’s a neat experience, I think. Plus it is related to what you studied, at least in part, right?
Read my books! Volume 1 and 2 of A Dragon Medley are available now.

I host the feedback lists, which are maintained by drag0nfeathers.

Big time revenge! 😆
I’d had no problem whenever we were visiting the chicken houses for the class, but for some reason the day we did dissection I got nauseous. I’ve never gotten that way with any of the other dissections I’ve done…maybe it was because the chickens were fresh killed and not the laboratory-type creatures I was used to. I had to go stand outside for several minutes to clear my head. I managed to go back inside for a bit, but had to go back outside again later.
After that I was especially grumpy towards chickens so I like to take my “revenge” whenever I can…helps that you can fix them so many different delicious ways too!
March 5, 2010 at 12:28 am #787091I was a student worker for the department in college and was assigned to help with a coccidiosis study on chicks. Major ewwww…. I didn’t eat chicken for 3 MONTHS after that. :puke: 😆

Yup, it’s more biology, but I did take courses in the stuff I’m doing, so I’m happy with it.
And I made a mistake yesterday. I said I “Wouldn’t want to describe the job at a bbq”… what I meant was in detail… like you said, people think their meat comes from a small plastic saran-wrapped container at the store. They don’t think about the cow it comes from, or the grinding it has to go through, because that’s the gross part. THEY thought I meant that I wouldn’t want to tell someone that I was a QA technologist at the company because I was ashamed of the job 😮 (no I’m proud of it, I feel like I’m making a difference 😀 )…. I got that cleared up rather fast!!!!
March 5, 2010 at 5:12 am #787093Congrats!!! I hope I can be in your court soon because I have a job interview for the 15th of March as a book keeper! It is rare for me to even get interviewed, so I am excited (I will even wear makeup! lol) I am so glad you got a job!!
