Seafoam arrived today and is absolutely gorgeous! Those pictures don’t do him any justice whatsoever! Unfortunately for me, my camera sucks and only takes very grainy pictures. But I just want to tell everyone what amazing work you do! Seriously, the prettiest piece I’ve seen that wasn’t painted by Melody herself!
February 15, 2016 at 6:05 pm #941921I love it!
February 15, 2016 at 6:14 pm #941924Oh my gosh, ‘Seafoam’ is fantastic! I kept thinking this was a different hippocampus I had already seen so I didn’t take a peak. Man, talking about missing out because of a silly assumption! Gorgeous work Hannah!
Her nose looks like I could rub it and it’d be soft and velvety like a real horse’s nose. π

Thanks everyone! As ever, your compliments always touch me π I can’t wait to paint some more! I’ve been doing a lot of repaints lately (naughty!) so I won’t be able to post them here, but if you keep an eye on my website I will update it when I have pictures of them all πjedwards, I am so happy that you love her! What a great compliment – I’m pretty sure it’s every PYO artist’s dream to be compared favorably to Melody! Thanks for the great trade (I’m itching to get home to see if Joule has arrived!!) π

The dapples were done with several coats of paint and lots and lots of blending with a small brush π

Love the colors and blending techniques you use. Beautiful job! I love the work you did on the hippocampus base, the colors in the rocks and other details. Any tips you can pass along to someone about to tackle this same PYO? I’d love to get that same realistic effect in the rocks. π

Hannah, you’ve totally inspired me to try out dapples on my next PYO!

Not currently open for PYO commissions.February 17, 2016 at 3:54 pm #942169Safire_blue – Thank you! The rock gave me some trouble because I’ve never been super great at drybrushing, but it seemed to be the best technique to make it look natural. I painted the rock a very dark grey first. After it dried completely, I used an older, blunt brush with stiffer bristles and drybrushed different colors on top of that. If I wanted an area to be more solidly colored, I would push a bit harder with the brush (but still not too hard! I wanted that grey to show through on the cracks). When I wanted to do highlights on an area I’d use a very, very light hand, barely dragging it over the area I wanted highlighted (always remembering to make sure the paint I was brushing over was completely dried!). You may have to do this several times, but it’s worth the effect! And one thing that seemed to work good for me was a technique that I remember from when I used to use colored pencils a lot – which is to basically try not to move your brush in the same direction every time you go over something, but go at it from different angles, or small circles. The caveat to this is that you don’t want to push very hard or you run the risk of getting too much paint on the piece where you don’t want it! Hope this helps π
Meowmix – That’s great! Knowing how beautifully you did your last unicorn, I’m hedging my bets that your dapples will turn out better than mine! π

Not currently open for PYO commissions.February 17, 2016 at 5:01 pm #942172I’m late to the party on this, but – oh, my goodness. Hannah, what incredibly beautiful work you do. Love the coloring, the shading, the detailing – just everything. And if I actually had any artistic ability whatsoever, I know I would be able to appreciate it even more. Having artistic daughters has made me have such a greater appreciation for how difficult drawing/painting/illustrating/etc really is. Congratulations.

Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated! I will be keeping this all in mind as I paint! π
October 31, 2016 at 3:57 pm #1509207Good grief.. it has been SO LONG since I posted in this thread!
I have lots of pieces to show, some that are still in process, some that have been sitting around waiting for their turn. Here is one that is on its way to their new owner and is long, long overdue.
I’ll post more of the already done, and soon to be done projects soon π
