well, i asked my dad what he did and he said it has nothing to do with the camera, just about nothing. i believe he said the most important things are time- tested knowledge and experience of how photography works and your use of light and how you position it. he said a major helping point was having “broad, soft light” aka not using a regular flash alone but combined with a large reflector or umbrella on a tripod – 3 feet across is good. using the reflector makes your flash 3 feet wide instead of 3 inches or thumb size, is the way to think of it. he says that make nice even light over the whole piece, with no blow out points or flash spots. when we need help under a wing or chin, we break out a little reflector, something silly like a white paper plate or like today, when we shot the wolf, a white paper shopping bag from a gift shop! stands flat, cuz its a bag with handles and totally lit up the dim sides of the piece. he kinda thew up his hands after that, as there is so much to know and describe, he was saying it would turn into a real hands on physical lesson basically. his main eccentuation is mostly likely your camera is just fine (as i’ve taken crystal clear pics using a shoe box with him) you just need to experiment with moving your controlled light source and observe the results in relation to how you want your piece to look end result. thats it in a nutshell but i’ll try to squeeze more from him.
absolutely my pleasure arlla! sounds like it will work out ideally if it goes that way! i fixed my wolf overnight and i’ll put him back up when i’m home from work ~6 pm. looks much easier on the eyes now.[img]
[img][/img]oh sure, i’d be happy to arlla! i could do it with a different color too in place of the blue, like a purple in the same tone as the blue, but then there are no purple eyes to match. hmmm. the blue eyes go so well with the blue paint- i think the blue is pretty sharp in general and holds together best. whatever honks your hooter though- it would be my pleasure and priviledge (hmm spelling, duh) to hook you up! i’d just need to order another pyo, as i have no more dragons, but thats no big deal if you don’t mind a little delay.. also, now that i did that dragon already, it will come out that much better second time around, i imagine. i’d be fully prepared for all the challenging areas this time! 😉 whatever you like, my dear.
oh arlla you can’t sell him, he’s gorgeous! beyond that! you make we want to cry! i could never part with a baby like that! he’s one of my favorites, look at that blending! my gosh how DO you do it? it looks like you almost used oils its so buttery smooth! well, i hope you get 500 plus for him cuz he is out of this world incredible. i hope you get really REALLY hooked up for him. good luck from the bottom of my heart!!
ok . i pulled the wolf totally and i am removing those bands as we speak. at the latest he will be back on tomorrow evening, but hopefully he will be back tonight! i think i will feel better this way, he won’t look off balance. 🙂
yeah i am waaaaaaaaaay sketchy about that mystery person, thats why i put on mine no zero feedback bidders, i don’t want some turkey bungling things for everybody! that gets upsetting for everyone if some bozo with no intention of paying is just running these auctions up! grrrrrrrrrrrrr! i that person tries it again they are getting a nastygram from me! i don’t trust it at all!
arlla you are incredible woman my god! 😳 😯 wow! i owe you a foot rub or something!
hmmmmm, do you think i should offer on the auction to fix the funny wolf feather, or just pull it and fix it and repost it?hey look at that! ME, who misses everything got my russet!!!!!!! now i am going to be sick cuz i just spent 70 bucks- uuuuuuuuuuurp! lol! i figged i’m not into the baby griffs, so this would be the last limited type piece i would be able to afford for a while.. i never got one before!! i should really have a limited as i ‘ve loved windstones for years and its special….. you people are such a bad influence!!! lol! not healthy! glad i caught it. 🙂
well on the auction it said they bought two… for some reason i thought i remember they bought three, hmmmm.ahhhhhhhhhhhh you know what they bought THREE of?! the white curl!!!!!!!! wow! gasp!!! gosh those are so pretty i am kickin myself for not getting one, but i was saving for the russet. i hope i’ll get one of those when they come up! no missing it again for me! oh, anyway the white curl, i saved the auction so i took a look! i wonder when those will surface huh? thats sounds like more than a spare for a friend there! yes that would a be a very scary trend of peeps looking to make moolah buy like 6 at a time or heck why not all of them?! at that point then windstone i think should set up a one or two piece limit, to prevent money grubbers!
oh ho hooooooo the banding on one feather! lol! the source of my anxiety! boy this was tough! it still bothers me big time too! originally that feather was just plain, but i felt it needed something, so i put some banding on the feathers.. it got too crazy on all of them, (not to mention i’m not super at the bands yet), but it looked too crazy. i tried it one the one and it seemed to give a little accent but not too much. but i was like, this is a little funny on just one isn’t it, hmmmmmmmmmm. now, the photo DOES make the banding look more (a lot more) pronounced than it is, as it blends in with the shine and highlights, but i did get a little shock when i sealed it, as it was only half as intense before hand! i forgot what a dramatic change sealing creates, flattening the paint n all!
i do feel it is too intense and i think i only should have had half the bands and they should have been thinner or at least not as dark. then it would have been just a subtle accent to punch up the last feather. i just didn’t want the bands to be streaky when i sealed em so then i ended up making the real solid black. oooh, oh my i could have done them in the dark silver! bahhhh! slaps forehead! what was i thinking!? egad! lol! ha ha!hmm well, what do you think?
ok, i am thinking i will post on the auction that whoever wins it that i can fix the wings per how they would like it, just in case it was bugging them…either by removing all or half the bands, going over them with the dark silver to be more subtle or whatever. that might make me feel better.not that i really want to deal with that area again though! ugh! i have painted over sealant and resealed over it with no problems before, so i’m not worried about that looking funny.
glad you like em though guys, i was all kinds of nervous.. everybodys’ pieces are always so good and everyone has been making such great progress! i’m so happy for everyone when i see you do better and better on each next piece; its exciting cuz i know how excited i’d be myself, i’d be so proud. i ‘m so happy for everyone because they are not easy to paint and peeps could get really discouraged or broken down by their experiences painting these! y’all are tough! heck, i still can’t get over my griffin painting experience! i am still recovering from that trauma from months ago, thats a tough piece for me!thanks for ALL the advice and hopes for my mom. 🙂 the info was very helpful and my mom goes back to the dr. first thing in the morning to check her progress. the dr. thinks they may have just caught it in time, but they’ll know more in the morning.we have our fingers crossed!
whew! gorgeous as always arlla! hes a stunner; look at those cute whisker holes and i love the tone gradation on his front legs! ssssssscrumptious! you have such patience for doing the wing markings- i’d cut off my head before i even got close to that. i sculpt not paint. i have to try the paint retarder…maybe the slower dry time will help me. yes, they are so fun to paint, sweet noses and my favorite are the front toes! eeeeeeeeeee! too chewy smoothy paintable goodness! they are just so cute n pefect, you can tell she loved sculpting them! hee hee!
hey thanks guys! i just wish you could see them in person, they look so much better! photos hurt, plus we did em in a hurry. whoever wins em will be pleasantly surprised when they get em! yes arlla they are up, five day listing. you’re so sweet, complimenting me when yours are always SO SUPER!!! i can’t wait til i get new ones to paint, i have such bright colors and fun ideas, i’m all anxious to do new ones n have fun!
he looks SO GOONY straight on from the front here! the flash kinda flushed out his face, poor fella. hes so elegant in person! we may try to take a better more casual pic, to see if that does him better justice. but yeah, i did him like how you see some of those incredible black wolves with the glowing yellow eyes, with just that little bit of silver tipping to their fur. i always since i was little found that color combo so stunning! i have another that is all pearlescent white with a smidge of very light silver with metallic pastel blue and purple wings, the two of them making a darkness and light duo. i meant to keep both as a pair, but now that i am selling him, i may put her up in a couple days if i finish her.i’ll miss him so much though. i get so attached to my stuff, especially artwise, they always end up being my babies.

there she is undone, pretty pearly girl.well, better late than never. i got my pieces up on ebay, despite all the chaos here. i am less than pleased with the pics, but you asking for trouble with silver paint jobs and shiny sealant! my goodness they look like poopus! hoo wee! all blow outy then ebay distorts them a little bit, i don’t remember that happening back in the day, like a couple years ago when i sold on here more. hopefully peeps will have charitable hearts, knowing these are hard to photograph.

and the wolf, i wanted to keep him- he looks awesome in person but i need some $$ to pay da bills. its a crazy time of year right now, for a lot of people. [img][/img][img][/img]thanks guys for the advice! nothing better than getting advice from peeps who ship that way all the time! thats crazy about those canadian fees etc. taxed on the value of incoming mail? i guess thats something you just have to absorb if you want something shipped to you from the u.s. huh? or you split it with the seller?
i’ve had stuff shipped to me from the u.k. and it was always like clockwork, really smooth n quick.well, we’ll see when i actually get my auctions up.. my mom is having a serious case of sudden on-set blindness from her diabetes that just came up about 36 hours ago. shes at the dr. now and they’re trying to save her sight.. if they can’t get the pressure under control in the next couple hours, she has to go in for emergency surgery to keep her from going totally blind by morning. 🙁 if you are a prayer, please say a prayer and have warm fuzzy thoughts for my mom; our family will be devastated if she goes totally blind and needs constant care!
anyhoo, that means my pieces may not get photgraphed til who knows when, that was supposed to be tonight, but hey sometimes LIFE happens and you have to deal with it. awwwww poopus! it was divine timing that they at least they were out here in r.i. for a visit instead of in n.y., as both her drs. are out here. she would have been in real trouble if my dad was away on jobs and she couldn’t get out here for days!
anyway thanks for all the input, yes i am scared a little more now( just a tiny bit), but the mystery is gone! heck i’ve had items get lost in the mail coming to me from 2 states away! stuff doesn’t need to go overseas to get bungled, thats for sure! -
