I don’t have any really useful advice to give. I don’t paint PYOs often, but when I do, I focus on painting color schemes that I personally find pleasing so if they don’t sell and have to stay with me, I don’t mind. That’s the originally intent, anyways. Unfortunately, I do eventually end up minding because I’m not a big fan of keeping my work around, so eventually I want them to find new homes. I’m fortunate enough to have a plethora of relatives who genuinely like what I paint and would be enthusiastic to receive any of my PYOs as gifts. (Which reminds me, I promised to paint a phoenix for my sister…..). Of course, getting paid for something versus giving it away is always preferred.
I can’t find fault in anyone for not purchasing anything I paint. I don’t purchase other people’s PYOs either and have been saving my meager pennies for new production pretties, so I’d have double standards if I assumed that’s acceptable for me and not others. Even still, my self-esteem can take a hit for a bit when I think something I did is really amazing but doesn’t end up selling right away. For example, my last couple of unicorns I thought were the bomb but didn’t generate much buying interest. They did both eventually sell, but not by active forum members and it took a while.
Personally, I don’t think Windstone is hurting forum painters by occasionally releasing PYOs on Ebay painted by production artist. I don’t know if you were around then, but when the early PYOs were released (Griffin, Dragon, Wolf and Uni), Nam (Jennifer Miller) was painting them and also releasing them on Ebay as official Windstone pieces. So this practice isn’t anything new, it just took a hiatus. If anything, I hope if generates more interest in PYOs in general by this type of exposure.
I think the fact that the recent Windstone production painted PYOs on Ebay went for so little probably means that the interest by those with expendable income is focused elsewhere (grab bags and whatever is the new hot trendy sculpt, me thinks). If officially painted PYOs with the Windstone label aren’t getting a piece of the pie, then independent forum artists weren’t going to get it either with their own PYOs.
Anyways, sorry for the long-winded post. Just kind of typing things as I think of them. I guess it doesn’t really address your issues. I love the PYO line and hope to see it never go away. When I think how much grab bags are going for and even small production pieces, it’s nice that there is an economical way to get some beautiful Windstone sculpts in my collection and not break the bank.
Congrats!
Another year? It goes so fast!
Happy Birthday! Those mice are TOO cute.
Those are some premade hairless Dime Rats by nEVEr-mor. I can see how they can be mistaken for mice at that size. They are tiny! Here is her DeviantArt page:
http://never-mor.deviantart.com/I agree, her stuff is adorable! I have six at the moment and want more.
I’ve only been lucky enough to catch one of her Dime Rat commission slots, and here are the ones I commissioned:
And the reference photo I sent her of my rats for color/markings:
Cool! Did you ask for that eye color to match with your other keeper or did they just pick it?
Please tell me you at least have a Wii U to use them with!
No
And I also own some Disney Infinity figures because I thought the pieces looked cool even though I don’t own that game for any system.
*runs and hides in shame*
I got a Charizard Amiibo for retail price! YAY for not paying scalper prices! Of course, I had to sit by my computer pressing refresh, refresh, refresh,….. on Amazon waiting for them to appear during the release window, but it was so worth it. My Pikachu needed a buddy!
I thought the frenzy over Windstone GBs were bad; they got nothing on limited Amiibos. Thankfully I don’t collect Amiibos and just wanted the Pokemon ones because they are cute.
Congratulations!
I would have been ecstatic to receive quite a few of the Brindle wolves that have been posted. I didn’t get one from the initial batches, but was fortunate enough to be able to trade for one. I hope to eventually add a few more to my collection!
This is the lovely wolf I received in the trade. It’s been posted before, but I thought I’d share my photo. 🙂
Happy Birthday!
I’m really sorry for your loss, pipsxlch. She looks like such a lovely dog.
My condolences to you and your family.
Thank you! Didn’t do anything particularly exciting, but did see the new Avengers movie, Age of Ultron. I enjoyed it, but felt it was nowhere near the greatness the first was. Still fun, though =)
