  • Surely, I do not.

Looks like my wildlife work has caught the attentions of the Department of Fish and Game. This fall, I will be kicking off my Master’s Thesis by rounding up some Pronghorn Antelope and fitting them all with GPS collars, and some with telemetry collars. The recent tragic events involving five pronghorn that were poached – nine if you count the twins inside each of the does – has generated a lot of interest in these wily sage-goats.

In short, I will get to run around in the sagebrush, tracking wildlife, acting like a loon. My usual bit. Except this time, I’ll have something cool to show for it.

    Could this get any better?

    Actually, yes.

I’ve been hired out to the Forest Service this summer to go hooting for Northern Spotted Owls, and calling Northern Goshawks – ironically in the same position (different ranger district) as my boyfriend.

…In short. That makes him and I a pair of hooters hired by the Forest Service.

Things are most certainly looking up.

Many goals. Many paths. Two jobs. One mind.

Stay tuned. Pictures to follow on Friday of Pronghorn, and other wildlife here at the wildlife area.

    EDIT: Here you go!

Too true– but you have to admit, awareness is the first step to get voter-driven legislation to pass.

Though it may not actually do much in the long run for energy conservation during the times they were turned off, I am willing to bet that a few people noticed this sort of thing!

    http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/03/earth_hour_2009.html

I won’t deny that. However, it is getting people to care after they are made aware that is the hard step. To my mind, plenty of people are aware, but very little are driven to care.

I do care immensely, and I understand how far a little can go… but the sad part is we need a *lot* of these little bits to really make a difference.

My own little ways are thus. By hunting, I remove my money from ranchers providing my meat and producing greenhouse gases (As well as I get food from a source that I can trust – can’t get more organic than that). By not running my dishwasher or washing machine unless they are absolutely full conserves water, as does my painstakingly set up drip irrigation system. I don’t use lights except at night and I am sure to turn them off when I leave a room. Almost every last scrap of recyclable material is sorted and recycled, and food scraps are fed to the chickens or put to compost. Almost every last appliance I own is high-efficiency (Energy Star) – those that aren’t do not remain plugged in. Shortly, I will be investing in a solar array to run my water heaters, light my stables, and sell electricity back to PG&E. By themselves, each thing I just listed is a little step. All together, it adds up to be a lot.

I just wish more people would move from awareness to doing. It would make a huge difference overnight if everyone made just one active change.

I would take part in it… except that events like this have been shown to have very little to no effect on the actual energy consumption of the planet.

Legislation is needed, not stuff like this to conserve energy.

A voter-driven crackdown on things like fuel emissions, car MPG standards, and a full-scale boycott on OPEC products is more likely to see results. Or, even better. Start investing in some energy sources that are self-renewing, and breedable. Like nuclear power.

I got the bejeesus scared out of me by mule deer this evening. The resident herd snuck up on me without a sound, and when I turned around, I suddenly had 20 curious mule deer checking me out.

I have photos like that but I doubt that they’d go over well here. 😉

But it’s considered perfectly acceptable to show pictures of raw steak and what not. *whine*

It’s called getting meat that was not raised in a stock-yard, and meat that has a carbon-neutral impact on the earth. Something that can’t be said of any of the animals we typically get meat from currently – especially cows. Give me a free-range deer over a cruelly treated stockyard animal any day of the week.

Well, gee. I was hoping to see a fine buck or doe about to become BBQ.

Great photographs anyways… I took a few myself. Though, given the option, they would be stocking my larder:

Unlike the ones you showed, I only get mule deer in and around here. I love their little black-tipped tails, and HUGE ears (hence the name!).

Hopefully you’ll get to see me in September with my first (dead) deer…

Have s’more pictures from the great State of Jefferson!

I am proud to say that I am now the proud Mother of a 1910 Winchester .243 bolt action (solid maple stock!), and a 1909 Savage .30-30 lever action before Obama could mess with my 2nd Amendment rights. The gun pictured is a .44 Magnum, on loan. It’s a fun gun to shoot! 😀

I’m hoping to go on my first deer hunt this year with my new babies.

My newest favorite hobby EVAR. Hunting for shed deer antlers. Access to 20+ private undevelopes acres is a real dream come true!

The spoils of my first real antler hunt.

    D’aww Moment!

What’s wrong with this picture? Roadrunners are not supposed to be present in Redding… Guess again!

A perfect sunset, for another day in paradise.

Actually, no. (Some did, but nobody I was really close to.) I guess I should have specified that it applied to these paragraphs:

This year for Christmas, I am not asking for Windstones, or DVDs, or jewelry. I’m not asking for clothing, or food, or even a few extra bucks in my pocket. To be honest, I have everything I need. I have my family, I have my friends, food in my belly, and a roof over my head. I even have a job doing something I absolutely love – a rare thing, these days. Even my Boss has been exceptionally pleased with me – complimenting me on my work and skill. Things I want are being put gladly aside until times are better, and to see others smile around me as I present them with the gifts I bought them for Christmas. The people around me this year are gifts in and of themselves.

While it is tempting to ask for something for myself, I would ask you to save my gifts this year, passing them on to people that are truly needing of them. I ask you give those near and dear to me a little bit of the Christmas spirit, so we may remember even these times fondly, and more importantly, remember those who have passed this year with memories of good times.

    This is my Christmas wish.

Sorry. Next time I’ll write my own Christmas wish and avoid the confusion. 😳

    Heh. No worries.

Beautifully said. May I second it? It applies to me too (except for the dream job part, but mine is close enough).

Yipes… I hope yours wasn’t as bad in the terms of people passing away. There have been far, far too many for me this year.

in reply to: Unusual weapons #746614

For my own personal defense, I prefer the bull-whip, AK-47, .50 cal, and of course, the classic shoulder-mounted rocket launcher. My .22 is reserved for small game, as is the pellet gun.

I suppose a bazooka would be overkill, but I highly recommend bladed crucifixes, ninja stars, nunchucks, katanas, hunting-knives, anything above a .45 cal, and of course, little white bunnies as unlikely weapons.

😮 Rattlesnakes? Don’t get me wrong I adore snakes but with my fascination of snakes and my love of photography  …can you imagine what would result from it?….OUCH!!! OK I’ll stay home. 😉

Well. From my standpoint, rattlesnakes are pretty in and of themselves. And if push really comes to shove, they make excellent eating. Not that there are too many rattlesnakes traipsing about in the snow right now…

    Is that where you live?

Yup. I live way, way out off the edge of the world. Nearest town is about… oh… half hour’s drive away. I’m out with the sage-grouse, the pronghorn antelope, rattlesnakes, chukar, ptarmagin, and all the other fun critters that inhabit the place where the high montane clashes with the great basin desert.

    Dear Santa…

I’d be lying if I said I was writing this letter for something for me.

This has been a really rough year. 8 people close to me have passed away, most abruptly, with little or no time to say goodbye. My mother broke her arm, and my sister was badly injured in a car wreck. Even I was down and out for a good portion of it myself… but I have managed to pick myself up and keep going.

This year for Christmas, I am not asking for Windstones, or DVDs, or jewelry. I’m not asking for clothing, or food, or even a few extra bucks in my pocket. To be honest, I have everything I need.
