I took a couple snapshots. The eye on the creature’s left side is the one that doesn’t fit.
Thanks. Yes I’ll take a smaller eye. It was really odd. Both looked like 8mm size (which seems the best fit with the crystals), but one I’d have to force in and the other just kind of fit, though slightly loose. The slightly loose I suppose is how it should fit. When I had them both in, the symmetry was just not there. One eye protruded more than the other. I’ll see about getting a picture of the eyes tomorrow when I have some daylight to take better photos.
If I don’t use the eyes on this dragon I may need them for the next one.
I’ve done the Krylon matte finish with some PVC/ vinyl figurines before – Bad idea. It flaked right off. It was fine as long as you never bumped or bent any of the flexible areas. If you did, there was trouble overhead. There was also issues with it reacting to the PVC and making it tacky. Dollar store figures were the worst. (I tried customizing their horses as well as various insects.)
So far I’ve found fabric paints and oils to be better choices. Oil paint doesn’t appear to chip off if applied in thin layers. It might still rub off some if handled roughly. But even then so far seems to be minimal.
Fabric paint: I had a set of it but they all eventually ran dry from lack of use (I went on art hiatus for a number of years.) I’m not ready yet to build up a whole new palette of paint at the moment unless it is for a commission or something important. Plus the kind I was looking for Tulip soft or stretch isn’t commonly sold locally for quite a while. But that was an acrylic that adhered to such material and could flex along with it. I used it on a praying mantis on a PYO insect set. But limited color range and loss of interest at the time prevented me from finishing it beyond the base coat.
Golden High flow is another I’m testing. I painted a dollar store honeybee figurine. The paint has survived gentle handling with some slight bending so far.
I’m going to try out PYM II on a vinyl figurine. That stuff is designed for sealing painted polymer clay without making it go sticky. Hopefully it will work.
Anyways, the coloring job on the body so far? Is it good, bad or needs some improvement?
I painted the claws, but will need to do work on where the quick meets the claw. The makers just dabbed the whole area with the red paint.July 29, 2016 at 9:36 am in reply to: Report Windstone Fakes/Knock offs/Infringment Pls read first #1487662Speaking of the Mother dragon fake. It is still up for sale.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Discontinued-Vintage-1985-WINDSTONE-EMERALD-GREEN-MOTHER-DRAGON-FIGURINE-M-Pena-/272316726171?This might explain why the right eye is chipped and cracked. If it came from the fake mold above, they would have to carve out the eyes in order to put a new set in. It looks like they forced the fit too much with the right eye.
July 29, 2016 at 9:26 am in reply to: Report Windstone Fakes/Knock offs/Infringment Pls read first #1487659Not yet, but that was a surprise to find. Now that I see that mold that explains the googly-eyed Mother dragon a couple pages back. Look though the string of relistings from the previous page I found it from. you’ll see at least one of their molds sold. I suspect that “Mother” dragon came from this mold.
I was wondering why the eye was cracked and why there was so much glue around the jewels. They probably had attempted to mash the eyes and gems (I’m guessing flatbacks) onto the round surface over the eyes and gemstones. Since that generates a gap, they had to fill it somehow. This explains the glue overflow.
I don’t have the budget to buy any of the dragons on ebay, I just add them to my watch list to see what sells and how much. Fortunately I had a real one on my watch list to compare the fake to. It was really interesting. lots of casting flaws and bubbles in the fake that weren’t in the original. That’s another interesting thing to observe. Even the PYO dragon I got showed very few if any air bubble holes.
Update. I’m thinking of going with the moth idea for my first PYO. If I decide to sell it later I’ll use that towards buying another to paint the other two ideas.
Reason for the decision: One eye does not fit. I swapped out for a couple swarovski rivoli stones (crystal vitrail medium) for eyes that give it the moth look really well. I still will try to contact about the eye. I might never know when I’ll need them for another project.
I’ll post my progress on the PYO forum when I have my idea drafted up.
July 28, 2016 at 10:59 pm in reply to: Report Windstone Fakes/Knock offs/Infringment Pls read first #1487643I was lurking this thread and found out the item is still up for sale even now in 2016:

I particularly like the Sinful colors line of colors. Oddly I don’t use them for my nails (my job doesn’t allow painted fingernails), but instead I use them as paints for various things.
Choices would be “Rich in heart” a really dark iridescent red or “diamond in the raw” a sparkly silver. I just have to give some time for the paint to cure on the body and figure out what protective spray coat to use.
What kind of spray finishes work for PVC type plastic without causing it to go tacky?
Thank you Melody. It arrived today. The dragon looks really pretty. I’m torn between two ideas. One is to paint it in green and brown shades w/ an attempt to make a tree for its background and a removable leaf hat for it. The other idea is to paint it like a monarch caterpillar and try to make a little caterpillar buddy for it.
I am raising 3 monarch butterflies this year. They just passed their caterpillar stage yesterday. About 7-12 days I expect some butterflies.
A 3rd idea is to paint one like an adult polyphemus moth. I’ve been raising them this summer and last summer.
Would it be okay if I were to order a PYO dragon and let’s say I add onto it, like have it wearing a leaf or make a base for it? I’, playing around with the idea. I have something in mind.
Sorry that didn’t work, There’s no way to preview to see if my image links are working properly?
Thanks for the recommendation not to use oil paints. I haven’t ordered a model yet but I am eyeing the PYO dragon. If I don’t order it this week, it will be next week. It will probably be a few weeks before I get it.
Why I was hesitant with acrylics was because my experience painting La-doll Premier type clay. It seemed prone to chipping off and I am a bit of a clutz. So far I’ve found oils to work well with air dry resin clays. Acrylic sometimes dries slightly tacky, especially on some polymer clay types. High Flow acrylics are really nice. I like that I can achieve a smoother texture on them without showing much of the brush strokes.
This is some of the stuff I paint. I cast leaves and flowers in silicone, then I use the molds to make replicas out of clay.

If not you can send me a message. It looks like something I can do. I have Apoxie sculpt, clay shaping tools and gold acrylic paint/ pearl-ex.
