Tips for antiquing

I need some help on antiquing. Whenever i try to antique, i end up with colour all over the original paint. Although sometimes this looks good, its a pain when it looks awful and messes up your carefully painted sections!
I use watered down paint in a darker colour and wash it onto the area. Is this the right way to do it? If so, how do i stop staining on the main body of the paint?

Watered paint is fine. I believe that’s what most people use. There is stuff you can buy to slow the dying of your paint but it’s not necessary though.

If you clear coat before antiquing it helps the antique to wipe off cleanly. This also means you can fix mistakes or remove it completely alot easier if needed. Also if the paint is drying too fast try antiquing smaller areas.

After putting on the clear coat (and waiting a few days for it to really, really dry), I antique mixing 1/3 paint, 1/3 water and 1/3 antiquing medium (I buy mine at Michaels). It helps removing the excess, especially once it’s a bit dry; you just use a humid sponge/paper towel/etc. With paint and water only, I think I’d find it harder to remove.

Nambroth (err, Jennifer) made a PYO tutorial. It has an antiquing section. It’s not the only way to antique (I use a different method myself), but if you never read it, it’s a great starter tutorial and provides a lot of helpful information =)
