I think I remember reading in the early days of the Forum that back when WE was in California, back near their beginning, employees were sometimes allowed to paint figures with minor defects (2nds, like used for copper patina and raffles) and take them home. I may be remembering wrong, and the time frame would have been late 80s-early 90s- not what this sounds like. Frankly, it does look like a repaint. *shrug*

In the “Ask Melody” category Melody says that the Riser might have been painted by somebody practicing with an airbrush.
November 20, 2023 at 6:05 pm #1678124In regard to the unusual Rising Spectral Dragon (and two other “seconds”) on ebay right now:
During the year we accumulate “seconds” that are pieces made in the factory that have something wrong with them but are still good enough that we don’t want to throw them away. New employees often use seconds while learning to paint. At Xmas we let employees take the seconds home. This Rising Spectral on ebay right now is one of those. He was not painted by Gina or Melody but by another employee a VERY long time ago who was working on their airbrush skills. It happened to be on the Seconds Cart one Christmas and someone took it home. That employee is now selling it (and a couple of others) on ebay. Its really from the factory and its really by a former Windstone Employee, being sold by a former Windstone Employee.
Its not a “repaint” or a “knock off”. Its a dragon of a different color!
January 17, 2024 at 6:53 pm #1679902I’m not sure if these have been reported, but I’m fairly sure I’ve seen these on Etsy before:
Looks like someone made a mold from one and casted them in cement- the Etsy store these belong to have a couple more as well!
And another! Different seller.

john@windstoneeditions.comMarch 22, 2024 at 4:31 pm #1682031Just a heads up. The item below listed on eBay is a knock off. It isn’t even a repaint because there is an obvious casting seam on his nose.
June 9, 2024 at 9:08 pm #1684149Just found this on Esty, apologies if this has been reported but better safe than sorry Clearly a recast of the Male dragon in cement, the company claiming it as their own. Sending to John via email as well.

June 10, 2024 at 6:39 am #1684150I just found another ESTY store from the UK selling a Male Dragon knock-off as well. They seem to be all over the place…

*** Come visit me on deviantArt at http://ela-hara.deviantart.comAugust 5, 2024 at 9:39 pm #1685704I can’t tell if this is a “kid got ahold of paint and a legit Windstone” kind of situation or a legit fake.

that appears to be a casting from a sculpt, they even left the eyes in when they did it or they just repainted over everything, either way, not allowed since they are claiming it is legit tanzanite when it isn’t….report it to John, his email is linked in the first post of this thread….
4 things I'm looking for:
1. Mother Meerkat
2. production color Sitting Young Oriental dragons to be made in more colors besides VF, Brimstone would be awesome!
3. Female Griffin – Siamese with White
4. September Raffle Prize 2022 AHD Male GriffinAugust 7, 2024 at 8:12 pm #1685742I’m not familiar with owl pieces so I’m not sure if this is a recast of an existing piece or the manufacturer making a copycat.

It isn’t the same owl as Windstone’s Owl Candle Lamp.
September 2, 2024 at 10:40 am #1686257They’re trying to pass this off as a legitimate Hatching Emperor Dragon – Tanzanite but it is obviously a fake and recast from some other material and hand painted vs airbrush. I thought it was maybe legit and someone’s kid gave it a new paintjob until the scale showing it’s weight.
