It’s not at all unusual for an anime convention to sell non-anime related items. Many fans of anime also love fantasy, so there are plenty of people selling dragons and the like. You also see American comic book characters, and many other random things.

Never seen anyone trying to rip off Windstones though. 😕 It’s really sad what some people do.

I work in a shop that sells Windstones, and have had a couple of customers recently tell me that they have been to ANIME conventions locally here in the Midwest, and the artist of these Windstone statues usually has a table set up and sells statues at the conventions. I said I doubt that it was the actual artist (lol) and that it was most likely just a store with a table selling them – but one person insisted it was the actual artist! She said she could paint the dragon any color they wanted. Hmmmmm

Another person told me they almost bought the two-headed hatching dragon, and I said there never was a two-headed hatcher, but that person insisted and I finally just gave in and let them insist there was. lol

I’ve never been to an ANIME convention but thought maybe I should peek in sometime, see what’s going on. I didn’t so much think Windstones would be considered that genre of merchandise.

Thinking out loud here, I guess? 🙂

What convention was it? Did they say? Conventions are required to keep information on their dealers and if we could find out what convention it might be possible to find out who this is and get the story on it.

Unfortunately all I got out of them was ‘a few months ago somewhere around St. Louis’, I did ask to pry a bit and the person didn’t really care to give much info and I don’t know that I’ll ever see them again. But next time, I’m going to take them to a back room and inquisition them; thinking blindfolded, strapped to a table, and dripping water!! But really – I was trying to get more info and they didn’t seem able or want to provide it!

Poems, it’s all right! These things happen. I wasn’t sure if you knew them or not. 🙂 We appreciate that you are on the ‘look out’ for Windstone in the first place… it means a lot!

I know that there is at least two Windstone dealers that travel to conventions to sell pieces. One at least also sells other collectibles and it’s possible one had two heads… I wonder if your customers were just not clear which were Windstones or not? And they could be referring to a PYO when the dealer offered to paint one. It’s hard to say.

The Xanth book Jumper Cable, just released in paperback, features three flions in it. And on it really since they’re on the cover, albeit with orange and blue wings. I noticed that this forum automatically ‘TM’s the word Flion, so I wasn’t sure if that meant the word wasn’t supposed to be used for other people’s winged lions or what. According to the authors note at the end, the name/winged lion idea was a reader submission so Piers Anthony (the author) may not know that Windstone’s original even exists, let alone was trademarked. I’ll admit to being a bit fuzzy on the implications of Trademark vs Registered Trademark vs Copyright. Does this need to be reported?

ETA I notice that the filter also takes the ‘s’ off the end of plural Flion. 😀

Windstone doesn’t own the idea of somebody slapping wings on a lion–things like that must be common enough in heraldry. If they were called ‘Flions’ in the book, that would likely be a problem. 😕

That’s my point. They are called flion in the book (minus the capital L and the TM). If they were just winged lions I wouldn’t have a question, but the use of the term flion to identify their species is what I’m wondering about.

              Quote:

“You shall not,” the flion said. . . . He made a roar, and two more flions appeared from behind the castle, rapidly flying in.

Windstone DOES own a Trademark on the word Flion in relation to winged lions (which is why the ™ appears on the word)… so it might be a problem. I am not 100% clear on if it would cover the use like that. I’d recommend emailing that situation to John since he would be the one to deal with it.

Are “Kinglet” dragons copyrighted? (the name?) . Something I came across on Ebay. Just wondering.

That I do not know! I’m not sure if Kinglet is trademarked. I don’t think so but I’m not sure. You’d have to ask Melody or John!

I don’t know either, but I notice that Kinglet does not get the TM added as Flion and Poad do.

I am the one that told the forum to do that, because those are the ones I am sure of. If there are others I will add them. Reptangle is also trademarked.

I suppose I could go poke Melody’s brain on this. 😉 It can’t hurt to check, right?
