I have considered bath salts..and even salt scrubs! I’m not sure that will happen any time soon though, because I’m trying not to ‘over reach’ what I can financially balance as far as new supply purchasing. Packaging for these type of products is something I tend to contemplate for a loong while before I actually make the product. I’m a very cautious spender, and you’d be amazed how much packaging can cost.
I’m not sure about body mists…but if you’d like something less overpowering than a perfume spray, I’d say that solid perfumes would be perfect for you!
Since it’s a solid base, you can apply only a small amount where you want it, without getting it all over your clothes, and in the surrounding air space. They can last longer, while having a more subtle ‘carry’ than fluid sprays….leaving the scent where you put it, such as the inside of your forearm..or on your neck.
What type of scents do you typically like? Green smells? Fruit/berry type? Resinous wood type smells? Spicy smells?
June 20, 2011 at 2:49 am #848754Oh, interesting tidbit of info for those of you who have noticed the different labeling on perfumes:
True perfume will have somewhere between 20-40% fragrance oils.
Eau de toilette will have somewhere between 5-10%.
and body spray in general will have 1-3%.
With true perfume, you’re paying mostly for the fragrance oils, suspended in an alcohol carrier for easier evaporation and ‘scent carry’. Only a spray or two should do with this, due to the higher fragrance oil content.
The scent effect should last longer as well. I use the word ‘should’ because fragrance oils are just that….oils. Your skin can soak these up like they would a moisturizer, and this is the reason why a scent will last much longer on clothing than on skin. The body chemistry and skin type of an individual can indeed affect how long their perfume will last.
Eau de toilette is a cheap version of perfume, mostly alcohol…and although they smell quite nice, dont be surprised if they only last a short while and you need more than a single spritz.
body sprays are mostly water, and due to that water content, use emulsifiers such as polysorbate 20 or other chemicals to force oil and water to mix. They cost much less…but then again, paying for mostly water…they cost a lot less to make in the first place.
June 20, 2011 at 5:55 pm #848793I got a package from Purplecat today!
First of all I have to say that Marzipan was EXACTLY was I was looking for! It smells like delicious little almond cookies!
Everyday, I put on a scented lotion when I get out of the shower just to give myself a pleasant smell for the day. Then I use another lotion (Jergens at the moment) to try to cure my terribly dry elbows. When I opened the Marzipan I tried it from my elbows to my hands, not only does it smell yummy, it smoothed out my “sandpaper elbow” instantly. INSTANTLY! This is some good stuff!
The Orange Creamsicle is perfect! I can’t even describe how genuine it smells.
I read a lot of praise for the Fire Topaz, so I wanted to try it too. It reminds me of Christmas when I was a kid. That is EXACTLY how my grandma’s house smelled for the whole month of December. It gives me the warm-fuzzies. <3Two months ago my hubby started working at a carbide grinding shop. The skin on his wrist have gotten unbelievably dry from working with the machines. His boss told him that if he gets carbide dust under the skin on his wrists it will cause major problems that will lead to him not being able to work. So he told me to pick out a couple scents that I like and he's going to try one out, too. I'll let you know which scent I see him using!
I'm really happy to hear that you will make a special request batch! I can't tell you how many times I have found a scent that I love, but by the time the bottle is empty the scent has been discontinued.
June 20, 2011 at 6:51 pm #848801I can’t tell you how many times I have found a scent that I love, but by the time the bottle is empty the scent has been discontinued.
OMG>….This!!!! This is one of the reasons why I wanted to make my own perfumes! I cant tellll you how many times this has happened to me!
Yes, ANY time you develop a ‘scent love’ I can always be contacted to make you small batches of that product.
I keep all recipes of every scent I’ve ever concocted, and the only thing that would prevent me from making batches of discontinued scents is a discontinuation of fragrance oils through my suppliers. However, this is unlikely…as I have several suppliers, and can often ‘scent match’ some oils by mixing others that have the same components.
I’m so glad you got your butters and are enjoying them! I also have hideous elbows, and these butters have been really helpful on mine too! We used to purchase Eucerin (I think that’s how you spell it) which costs a decent amount and now we’ve switched over to using just my butters, since it works better. (smells nicer too!)
June 21, 2011 at 1:38 am #848844On the topic of this thread… I hate you Canada Post…
I’m assuming the order I made shipped, of course the entire freaking country is in lockout! So it’ll probably be a while before I get anything… they won’t go bad if they’re in transit for a massive time, will they?
June 21, 2011 at 2:32 am #848846Everything you ordered should be fine, they shipped on june 13th. Sooo…it’s been a full week already…ouch. Ah, any time you order through etsy, you can check the ship date through your purchased orders, I do my best to mark everything I ship immediately upon returning home from the post office.
The only real thing that could cause problems is if they’re stored in really severe heat and melt. If they arrive melted, simply put in your fridge for 10-15 minutes and stir gently (in the case of body butters).
In the case of melted solid perfume, it resolidifies really quickly, and shouldnt be a problem, except it may resolidify less than level in the container. If this happens you should be able to sit the little tin on a candle warmer pad and it will gradually remelt the base. Once it levels, stir gently, then turn off the candle warmer pad immediately (lest it evaporate the fragrance oils) and leave it alone until everything cools and is safe to touch.
If for any reason something is damaged beyond repair due to the canada post strike, just let me know and I’ll replace it (though I’ll probably wait to ship replacements til after the canada post strike is resolved in some way, so the next batch wont have the same problems).
Being that you’re in Canada…I’m not as worried about the temperature thing….I’d be more concerned if they were going to Texas and had this sort of delay. Butters and solid perfumes are best used within the first 6-8 months of their creation, so I wouldnt worry about them spoiling during transit due to time issues. I’d certainly hope not anyway.
June 21, 2011 at 3:01 am #848848Hey! So glad to see you again, but sorry about all your troubles. 🙁
All of your things look lovely! I still adore your sculptures and treasure my pink snaildragon (dragonsnail? I have one of the first ones). Do you make the griffins anymore?
For me, with these sorts of products, I always go for the very lightly scented or non-scented varieties, and always with fruit instead of floral. You have some really beautiful sounding scents!
i have her “almost naked” lotion 😀 it’s really nice it’s a barely there cent that is slightly fruity. 😀
June 22, 2011 at 1:00 am #848927So you shipped right before the lockout – they were already striking, but it wasn’t affecting much, only one city at a time. I didn’t actually check the ship date on etsy (I forget it’s there, honestly).
Hopefully this resolves soon… I was kinda hoping that I could use that perfume on my wedding (assuming it’s not too strong for my fiance – he’s more picky then me). It’s making me impatient seeing all of the “I LOVE THIS STUFF” posts… haha.
June 25, 2011 at 4:38 am #849285Aww, Dragon I hope that you get it in time for your wedding!! May I ask when the date is? My brother is getting married tomorrow – it’s been a crazy year, culminating in (for me) a lot of baking, and a lot of opinion-giving to my soon-to-be sister in law 🙂 I’m excited and a little nervous and I’m not even in the wedding!
PC – I finally got to try the Hothouse Roses soap, and wow! The word that keeps coming to mind when I use it is decadent. It’s just so rich with the lovely sweet floral and the spicy cinnamon and clove scent. I actually just went back to your page after typing that sentence not having known exactly what the scents were, and of course you describe them better but I think it’s saying something that I could recognize at least 2 of the different scents {I’m normally terrible at that type of thing}! This is easily my favorite scent so far, and I’m definitely going to have to get more of it soon. It’s fantastic!
Commission spots are currently closed! Please message me for details.
Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!June 25, 2011 at 12:51 pm #849290Love love love the Dragon Butter body butter!! I just ordered more and I’m going to try a soap this time, too. Any chance on you making a solid perfume in this scent? I’m so happy to hear you keep your recipes. There’s nothing worse than one of your favorite scents being discontinued:(
June 25, 2011 at 3:34 pm #849295I can certainly make some solid perfume in that scent! If you’re sure you’d like some, I can make some up this weekend and mail it out with the rest of your order on Monday. email me at purpletabby@gmail.com if you would like to do that, and it’d save you on shipping.
Oh, the Dragon Butter scent is one I ADORE in soap. It makes a very luxurious scent for using in soap form.

Thank you! I really like how it came out as well. I have to admit, that was a scent combo I was really afraid wouldnt work when I was mixing it, but was so pleasantly surprised when it came together beautifully! I love the scent of roses, and wanted to do something a bit different with it.
The idea initially was an english rose garden, with a settee for enjoying coffee cake and tea in the middle, a shady escape on a warm day….and the scent that a person might enjoy from that imaginary setting.
June 25, 2011 at 3:53 pm #849297Have you thought about doing shower gels?
June 25, 2011 at 3:56 pm #849298Actually…you know I havent!
I never use shower gels, so I’m not sure if it’d be something I’d really get into.
I have contemplated shaving soaps though.
June 25, 2011 at 4:35 pm #849300Darn. I love shower gels. I’d be very likely to try some if you did make any.
