I think I may work on a leather based male scent sometime this afternoon, as well as experiment a bit with a cherry blossom blend. Maybe a manly campfire type smell too. hmmm……any other suggestions while I’m in scentblending mode?
June 11, 2011 at 5:49 pm #847936Well, I read most of the replies, but not all so forgive me if I say something someone else already did.
I’ve seen your shop on etsy. I’ve planned to buy some of your butter when my current supply runs out. I’m an obsessive hand washer, so I need quality thick lotions for my hands. I also have this weird single rough patch on my upper arm that never goes away.
One thing I wanted to ask you, what kind of preservative do you use in your lotions? Just the vitamin e? If so you may want to point out that your lotions are paraben free. People, myself included, like this.As for you “charging too much”… BS. Your prices are very reasonable. There is a shop on etsy I’ve bought from a few times that, depending on the product, asks $10 for a single ounce of lotion. Don’t let anyone say you charge too much.
Your soaps are melt and pour, yes? I don’t know how popular your soaps are, but I notice melt and pour soaps are less popular then say cold or hot press soaps. I notice melt and pour soaps being more popular if oils are added. Like carrot oil, or other oils that benefit the skin.
June 11, 2011 at 6:34 pm #847947Yes, my soaps are melt and pour….I did consider cold process briefly, but after trying some out with my daughter it seems the lye in those is much harsher on her skin, so we went with the melt and pour option, which she’s been able to use without problems.
I tried a few different types of MP soap before settling on the goat’s milk blend. honestly, after testing several, I find I just liked the goats milk type best…though later on as funds permit I’d like to expand out to offering a few olive oil mp soaps, which has a particularly nice lather. So far, the soaps have actually sold really well, but I’m always looking for ways to improve my products, so I appreciate the suggestion!
(I had to go look up parabens when I read your question…) but yes my butters are paraben free, I’ll have to consider going through and labeling them as such! I need to anyway….my butters also contain soy wax, which I forgot to add on the ingredient list….when I started up the etsy page and was still figuring it out, I was a bit lackluster with my ingredient lists, I need to go through and fill them out more thoroughly, triple checking everything.
June 11, 2011 at 6:50 pm #847950*bounce bounce bounce* I’m planning on ordering some stuff from your etsy shop today! I actually was sitting around last night checking out all the scents and wondering what I’d like the best in butter form vs soap form (I’ll have to try the perfumes another time!). Can you recommend certain scents over others as far as butter vs soap? These are the ones I liked the descriptions of the most that (I think) are both in body butter and soap forms:
Fire Topaz
Summer Champagne
Raven’s Blend
Marzipan
Lemon Chiffon
Edit: forgot Hothouse Roses 🙂I am DEFINITELY going to be trying the first three – but I’m torn about Marzipan (Bourbon?! that sounds too awesome!) and I’m torn between Lemon Chiffon as a butter and as a soap. I will likely be getting a sampler of the butters and maybe 3 soaps if that helps any XD

Fire Topaz—in my opinion this scent goes really well in both soap and butter form, it’s a really lovely scent, one of my faves.
Summer Champagne—This one is nice in soap..but honestly I find it has more appeal in the butter form. It’s a lighter more delicate scent, and the notes used in it just shine better in the butter form where it can linger on skin.
Raven’s Blend….OMG…I love this in soap. It’s nice as a butter, but I tend not to enjoy ‘wearing’ my coffee as often as I will enjoy the hit of scent when you wash with it. It also has a nice dark chocolate sweetness that I feel is really almost exotic as a soap. Both are nice, but soap trumps butter in this case.
Marzipan–I prefer this one as a butter, but my hubby prefers it as a soap. I think this one is a bit subjective to personal preference, but since you asked me I say it’s awesomer in butter form!
Lemon Chiffon–this one is really great in both forms, the lady that lives across the street from me has a serious addiction for this scent, and also agrees it is wonderful both in soap and butter form. I felt like I was taking a huge risk putting the hints of cinnamon pastry in a lemon blend..but it really came out as a slam dunk success.
😀
June 11, 2011 at 7:10 pm #847956Awesome!! Thank you for the help 😀 It will definitely weigh my decisions nicely!

June 12, 2011 at 10:59 pm #848053Just as a hint, I would consider adding an ingredients list to your listings, if you can. I don’t think you need it for the sampler pages, but for the individual listings, it might be a good idea. Someone with a lot of allergies, may need to know ingredients for purchasing (especially if they’re allergic to a common additive that wouldn’t be obvious by the name of scent description of the product).
If your ingredients change, though, you would also have to update the etsy page to reflect, to avoid people purchasing a product, and then complaining that they didn’t get what they ordered.
And I ordered stuff! Can’t wait for it to get here, I want to try some of your stuff out!!! They LOOK like they smell good, so I guess your photos were a good seller for me, right?
June 13, 2011 at 12:55 am #848063Purplecat-Here is an idea for you. Ive always wanted to try to make something like this myself, but I just have too many projects going at one time, and have zero or next to zero knowledge on the topic, where as you have MUCH more than I, so maybe you could take this idea and run with it…
I live in Houston. For anyone who has never been to the South, or been to the coastal south-its miserable here in the summer. The humidity is 80%-100% on an average basis, which means its sticky. I have really oily skin, so the heat, the sweat, the oil-YUCK! If Im outside doing something, I will usually have to go inside if at all possible and wash my face before going back outside-or take a napkin and try to clear my face-and it still feels icky. I’m sure Im not the only one who feels the ick of summer.
What I would LOVE to have is a product-ideally a wipe so I wouldn’t have to worry about it spilling or drying up as easy as a spray. The wipe would be in a purse/pocket sized container and would have some kind of mint/water on it so that after use, the area where you used it (face or otherwise) would feel cold, cool and refreshed, kind of like how you feel after you use minty toothpaste or mouthwash…or chew minty gum and then drink water-that water is ICY frigid cold, but to someone not chewing mint gum, it is just cool.
Hopefully that made sense.
June 13, 2011 at 1:05 am #848064I got my sampler pack in the mail yesterday! They’re wrapped so cutely, I had to tell my hubby they were soap and not candy. 😀
They all smell fantastic. 😀
June 13, 2011 at 2:00 am #848056Yes, my soaps are melt and pour….I did consider cold process briefly, but after trying some out with my daughter it seems the lye in those is much harsher on her skin, so we went with the melt and pour option, which she’s been able to use without problems.
Hmmm. That’s interesting. The lye should be completely gone if made correctly. Perhaps you could try the super fatted method if you ever try again.
The reason I mention the melt and pour is… think of it this way. If you can do it, why can’t someone else? I myself have three different kinds of melt and pour soap in my house (including a goat milk block)… just ready to be, well melted and poured heh. But when extra beneficial oils are added, it becomes more of “I could do it, but I’d have to get x, x and x. It’s just easier to buy this one already made”.
And like Dragon87 said, ingredients list. I’m a weirdo when it comes to stuff I use on my body. I don’t want to use chemicals. At all. I don’t even use toothpaste… I use toothsoap. Toothpaste is actually toxic and causes more problems than it’s suppose to help. I also don’t use shampoo, since it’s all chemicals and detergents and ick. I use hand made soap that has added ingredients that benefit hair. I even make my own deodorant. Yeah.
So long story short, when I buy items I want a complete list of ingredients. If a seller doesn’t have those, I don’t buy from them. I don’t give the item a second glance, no matter how nice it looks.June 13, 2011 at 2:23 am #848072Wolfen, I can totally understand where you’re coming from with the cooling wipe idea! However…the cooling sensation you’re referring to comes specifically from menthol, which is derived from peppermint plant.
HOWEVER, This is the important part….anything containing menthol can be severely hazardous if inhaled, or if accidentally gotten into the eyes. Even the fumes can cause eye irritation. Here’s a cut/paste from the Peppermint oil MSDS safety sheet.
“hazardous to the skin (irritant), eyes and respiratory tract. May also cause allergic dermatitis. In case of eye contact, may cause loss of corneal epithelium, corneal infiltration, and release of pigment into anterior chamber with deposits on back of cornea”
Anything containing menthol would have this hazard.
June 13, 2011 at 5:15 pm #848108If I could possibly suggest, what would you think of changing the name of your “Almost Naked” scent to “Nearly Naked”? I think that the repetition of the N…N… sound gives it a nice feel, almost musical.

Yikes! I had no idea O.O Its funny to me that peppermint oil (which sounds so innocent and harmless) has a MSDS. Hmm. Maybe I will have to look more into that and figure out a way to dilute it or reproduce the same feeling using something else.
June 14, 2011 at 10:29 pm #848218Keep in mind that many plants are poisonous, and the earliest poisons were created from entirely natural herbs, if applied in a specific manner.
An interesting tidbit…historically anyway….In France, Perfumers were also known to create poisons; for instance, a French duchess was murdered when a perfume/poison was rubbed into her gloves and was slowly absorbed into her skin.
Just because something is natural doesnt necessarily make it better for you.
Although I’ll use a few essential oils, I’m also very open to using synthetic fragrance oils, if they’re of superior quality, due to safety reasons. Did you know that citrus rind oils, such as lemon, orange, or grapefruit essential oils…are phototoxic? Meaning that if exposed to sunlight after being applied on skin, they can cause burns. Cinnamon bark extract can be downright dangerous as well, causing major skin irritation.
I’m all for using natural products, at every opportunity, when they prove to be safe and earth friendly. However, I feel too often people equivilate ‘natural’ with ‘safe’.
The real key is researching every ingredient, and triple checking the safe uses before putting it in any product. Even if it sounds like something familiar and friendly, other parts of the plant can be deadly. (such as oils derived from the rinds of citrus fruits, versus the actual meat of the fruit, for example)
