… but I wonder why vets are sometimes just so quick to jump on the idea of euthanizing them.
It really depends on the vet. There are two vets here in town, and one would always jump to the most expensive option. When my german shepherd had a fungal infection in one of his toes, they put him on anti-biotics. When they didn’t work, you know what they said? “We need to amputate his toe”. Are you kidding me? So we said a big screw you and never went back to them. We went to the other vet in town for our other animals after that, but we asked her about the dogs toe (he never came into that vet until the day he was put down). Without seeing the dog, she said to try an athletes foot cream on the infection. The infection was gone in a week or so after that. Such a simple cure, yet one vet only wanted the money involved in removing the toe.
And my ferret Riku was essentially killed by a vet that acted like he knew what he was doing, but really didn’t. By the time I went to another vet (an hour drive one way), they took one look at him and knew exactly what was wrong, but it was too late at that point (it only took 6 days for him to go downhill that fast, yet I had been at the vets probably 5 times in those days).
Needless to say, I’m going to take that hour drive if I ever need my ferrets seen by a vet. My little girl ferret got my flu a couple years back (she climbed into my bed when I was sick) and I took her there, and she was doing better the second day after the visit with what they told me to give her. Not to mention they appear to really care. They told me to come right away, and I would be seen immediately without an appointment. If one vet sounds iffy to you, get a second vets opinion. You’d be surprised sometimes.
As for the food thing, I wouldn’t feed anything by Hills. All their foods are fillers and by-products. That won’t help anything. Wampus as a good list, but there are many more brands that product “real” food, without fillers or by-products. Yes, they are more expensive than grocery store brands, and take some research/time to find, but it’s worth every penny to know your animal is eating well. My cats and dog eat Taste of the Wild, and we bought it from a feed store for years since no other store near by carried it. Now two privately owned animal stores are in town that sell it.
Read the ingredients. All of them. Don’t believe anything that’s just printed on the food bag.March 1, 2012 at 10:35 pm #875405I am so sorry to hear about your Ajani, I had the same problem with Ralph he is now 17 years old so don’t give up hope! He was at the vets for 5 days and
I had to put him on the hills prescription diet (I think it was cds or something like that) he was on it for about 4 yrs until I got laid off of work and had to put him back on purina indoor dry cat food, he has been on that now for 6 yrs and has not had any problems yet!
I hope everything works out for Ajani, but don’t give up hope!March 1, 2012 at 10:37 pm #875406I am so sorry to hear about your Ajani, I had the same problem with Ralph he is now 17 years old so don’t give up hope! He was at the vets for 5 days and

Sending you some BIG HUGS!March 2, 2012 at 1:29 am #875420Thanks everyone. The food thing has me worried, but the ER vet DID give me some free samples of the Hills CD wet food so I am assuming she wouldn’t have done that if it was going to be harmful.
Hopefully I will find out everything tomorrow. I have to say though, it was interesting re-arranging my work schedule and tell my boss I need to work a late shift so I could get up early and collect my cat’s fresh pee!

Sun Dragon Koi #3March 2, 2012 at 2:57 am #875439Well lucky for me he has been pretty naughty and has been peeing just beside the box instead of IN it.
That may be a sign that he’s associating his litter box with the pain of trying to urinate. Harley did the same thing. Going pee in the litter box hurts too bad, so they try to go pee somewhere else, to get away from the place where all that pain happens.
🙁 Poor little guy. An extra litter tray in a different place might help.

Oh you know I never though of that. I haven’t been punishing him, it’s out of the ordinary for him to do it, but I was just happy he was peeing and I was able to keep track of it because his pee is sort of pink right now (sorry if this is TMI for some people) but the vet said it would be that way for a little while.

March 2, 2012 at 11:29 pm #875544I’m so sorry to hear about what’s going on with your kitty… 🙁 I remember when a similar situation happened to my cat, Pickles. His vet said that even the best, well-behaved male cats tend to have a lot of unusual accidents when they are having any form of a urinary problem. This is due to associating discomfort or pain with the litter box, so they look elsewhere to go.
Thankfully, their accidents tend to stop once their health gets back on track! But until then, my vet recommended placing wee-wee pads down in the “accident areas” (and of course another small litter box or two). I found that while my kitty was recovering, it helped TREMENDOUSLY! And once he recovered, he went back to the litter box and lived a very long and happy life!
I don’t know if this will be helpful in your situation, but it’s worth a try! 🙂
March 2, 2012 at 11:36 pm #875546He was doing okay today till we had to go back for his check up. He BROKE the cat carrier o.0 so I guess he has his strength back!
I got a new food that dissolved BOTH types of crystals as I was unsuccessful in capturing kitty pees. * I fail! *
However, I got this rubbery litter as someone mentioned and I’m going to try again using that. His exam went well though. His bladder was nice and squishy which is a good sign ^_^

March 4, 2012 at 6:47 pm #875703Thanks so much everyone for all your kind words and efforts to help me with Ajani. He’s beginning to recover so I am very relieved for the time being.
I don’t mean to seem ungrateful to everyone here who cared to PM me and was kind enough to think of Ajani on a day to day basis and post in this thread, I thank you all deeply and from the bottom of my heart. I truly do… but in lue of a lot of other drama going on around here I think I’m taking a break from here for a while.
I’ll still be checking on on my repairs and PMs and probably lurking because I have no life other then work, my cats, and this forum, but I’ve really just had a week from hell…month from hell…actually this whole year has sucked for me and also I’m just so sick of other B.S. on here… I am a pessimist at heart so I’m sorry if I come of as needy or whiny. I know apparently a lot of people just think I complain on here constantly. I’ve been on this forum since basically day one and now I’m realizing why a LOT of the original forum members just don’t post anymore. I’m just sick of it, I really really am. I’m not saying new members are bad or anything like that, I’ve made a lot of great new friends and I’m happy the forum is growing larger every day. It’s just the cliques on this forum are either getting out of control or I am just paranoid because I feel like everybody is just conspiring against me lately. It’s getting to be too much for me to deal with at this exact moment in time. I don’t like knowing who is a friend and who is just pretending to be nice so they can stab me in the back over something as frivolous as a statue. I’m just too stressed out to deal with it.
I don’t know if I’m just being emotional because I have had a hard time with everything this year so far or if I’m just growing out of Windstones entirely. There are times i think of just selling my entire collection and leaving for good lately. I don’t want to do that, so until I develop a healthier attitude on life in general, I just think it’s better if I not post publicly too much anymore. I don’t want any more negativity of mine to effect people on this forum. I know how it makes me feel when I see members piss and moan about the same things over and over and over and I feel stupid for not realizing what a hypocrite I am becoming because since I am so depressed and upset lately I’m doing the exact same thing and losing good friends over stupid situations and misunderstandings.
I know to a lot of you guys this probably doesn’t make much sense. I am posting this self loathing rant in a supportive thread where people have been kind and helped me, but everyone needs to have a mini breakdown sometimes and I didn’t want to draw a bunch of attention by posting a new thread whining about “Why I am Leaving” I figure, anyone who cares enough to look at this thread about my sick kitty, cares enough about me to understand why I am posting this here because they are someone who actually gives a crap about me as a fellow human to come back to this thread in the first place.
Again, I’m sure I’m not leaving for good or anything like that I just need to distance myself for a bit until I get myself straightened out. This is extremely hard for me because you are all like my second family. I hope everyone understands what I mean, I’m not very good with expressing myself in an eloquent way and I usually come off pretty brash. So I apologize again to anyone who I have unintentionally hurt or bothered lately. Life has just been very hard lately. That’s just the best way to put it without getting into details. Just hard and unpleasant and it’s difficult just to get out of bed lately. So yea, I’ll be trying to work on myself for a while and when I feel better, I’m sure I’ll come back. I probably won’t even really leave, just talk a lot less… so see you later guys ^_^
