I agree w/ Rusti. You should work w/ your regular vet to find the right formula. The type of food you need if you have to persciption will depends on what they find in the urinalysis. The wrong food will make the problem worse, as we saw w/ Bitsy and her Oxilate type crystals. Even w/ Jere’s kidney disease we regualry monitor her ph levels.

In my dog, Shion’s, case he wouldn’t eat anything that wasn’t mostly filler. He has stomach ulcers and the good quality food w/ high protien actually irritated his ulcers. The cheaper the food the better he liked it. He still won’t eat things he knows make him sick. When we go through a drive thru, for a treat I get him a bun because he won’t eat the meat patty. Sometimes high quality food will actually make the issue worse.

Hope you feel better, and Ajani too.

I don’t think it’s an infection. When he was flushed by the emergency vet she said there were a large number of crystals in his bladder, but didn’t mention anything at all about fever or infection.

Would CK really hurt him? If anything I would think it should help and be better then any regular cheap food. I was thinking of just putting all my cats on it since it’s basically impossible to monitor all 6 of them eating and also, since urinary health is overall what I have lost most of my cats too. (Renial failure, etc) I figured it would be a safe bet.

The vet seemed to think it wouldn’t hurt, just be more expensive in the long run.

drag0n, I’m not trying to nitpick, but out of the bottom of my heart and concern for your baby, PLEASE, please please take him to his regular vet and get a urinalysis done! This is something that will have to be professionally managed and I would hate for something to happen that you might feel terrible about later.

He needs that, so that you know exactly what you’re dealing with, and if something is about to go wrong, it can be caught before it happens. It could save you $$$$ in the long run and make Ajani’s life so much easier.

Please don’t just start him on a food without a good, thorough check up. Like setsuna said, if those crystals are oxalate, you could make the problem worse.

Make him an appointment. Take him to the vet. It’s important.

I plan to Rusti, but as someone already mentioned, I think with him on medicine right now it wouldn’t make a difference. I probably have to wait a week or two until they are out of his system.

I TRIED calling my regular vet 3 times already and haven’t heard back just so I could ask him some questions concerning the situation. I also had him paged when I was at the ER to see if he would make an emergency call, but he also never answered his page.

I’m probably going to call a different vet tomorrow and see if I can’t just change vets entirely. It just sucks I’ll have to have two different vets I guess since the other local vet is a cat only hospital.

That’s frustrating that he won’t call you back. If you can get hold of him, it’s definitely worth asking if they’d do a urinalysis while he was on antibiotics. The meds won’t do anything about crystals, but they’ll mess up bacteria count.

I wouldn’t mess with his diet too much until you see someone, but you might go ahead an switch him off Iams and onto something else, I don’t think that will hurt.

Edit: that is to say, off of Iams and onto a premium brand like Wampus mentioned. No Rx diets yet without vet OKs.

I think the crystals will still show up in a UA. Eventually his body will flush the crystals as long as his body isn’t making more. The antibiotics will treat the infection, but not necessarily the cause which is the crystals. Bitsy went through 7 rounds of antibiotics before she had to have surgery to remove crystals that were too large to pass. It wasn’t until after her surgery and she had been on the XD for a while that her body stopped producing the crystals. Oxalate crystals occur in like 6% of cats w/ this type of problem, Struvite are much more common, but because Bitsy had the rare kind it made treating her and feeding her quite the learning experience.

The food that helps with Struvite make Oxalate worse and the food that helps with Oxalate make Struvite worse. You NEED to determine which type Anji has and treat according w/ your vet’s advice.

Good luck finding a helpful vet. It sounds like you live in an area where a good vet is hard to find. I drive 20 miles to see mine, so I understand.

when my boy had this problem, he had to stay at the vet nearly overnight since they wanted to get a sample….so I waited around for a few hours before closing hoping he wouldn’t have to stay overnight, he took until about oh 15 mins before closing to give a good sample…my vet poke his bladder with a needle though and took some, dunno how you would get a fresh sample that wouldn’t be all contaminated with kitty litter though if you took it from the kitty box like it seems your vet is suggesting….

A litter box with shredded wax paper instead of litter is how my vet suggested I get a sample. Unfortunately they need a good bit and need it as soon as they ‘go’ since the longer it sits out the more crystals form. I had to end up leaving Sneezer over night on two occasions cause he would NOT pee cause he’s scared of being there :K

Anything off of Wampus’ list is fine for now, but be sure you tell the vet what he was eating before, and what you switched him to.

As for collecting a urine sample, you can try setting out the empty (clean – free of dust and litter debris) litter box and see if he’ll use it,

If not, see if they can give you some little plastic beads to make him think it’s ‘litter’. We had some specifically for the owners to use at home. The urine flows right around them and pools at the bottom of the box, you can tip it into a sample cup from there.

Or you can try aquarium gravel rinsed clean. Just put a very thin layer on the bottom of the box so you can tip the urine out.

If all else fails, they might do a cysto, where they’ll take a sterile sample with a needle through the abdominal wall into the bladder. He has to have something in there that they can feel for that, so if his bladder is empty, they might keep him long enough for it to fill enough for them to get a sample.

                          Good luck!

my boy had this problem, his previous owners abandoned him in an apartment when they were evicted, we eventually caught him after the landlord accidentally let him and his family member kitties out, he then went to the shelter for a bit because I had to convince hubby who was only boyfriend at the time to adopt him then ended up with us…

well with all that, my boy has abandonment issues so no pee without a needle…but the vet does have one good thing there that helped a little, they have a vet kitty there, basically she’s the mascot and wanders around and she spent some time “talking” with him….it’s was funny to listen to…

                            “Meow!”
                            “mew..”
                            “Meow!”
                            “mew mew…”
then eventually my boy got quiet since he felt safer with vet kitty…

Well lucky for me he has been pretty naughty and has been peeing just beside the box instead of IN it. I have a boot tray I plan to put where he usually oges. With some luck, I’m hoping he will pee in the boot tray and I can just pour it into a cup or whatever.

Usually well laid out plans like this blow up in my face though >_<
