Why not both glossy and matte finishes? Glossy on the base to simulate the water washing up onto the rocks and sea life, and matte on the Hippocampus itself – since she seems to be sun bathing on the rocks?
To perhaps add a little more fun, maybe some of the Hippocampus’ tail can be ‘wet’ too with the glossy finish – like she’s just gotten on the rocks? 🙂

      Great job so far!

If you’re working with brush on, you might try mixing the two, I like my mixed one quite a lot (Mine is Satin + Matte, so you might put more matte in with a dash of the gloss).. and think it could look really good with the mixed on the scales, matte on the fur, and as mentioned, maybe the gloss on the rocks? I love pieces done with multiple finish types, brings more depth to the piece 🙂

Wow! Fantastic work (and some great advice too). I love how the blue towel adds to the impression of her getting out of the water, intentional or not. Looking forward to seeing her complete! 🙂

I’ll definitely check out the multi finish look when I give her the initial coating of gloss, which I do for all my finished pieces before deciding if I want to matte it or not. Could be cool looking!

My W&N iridecent medium works too to give that ‘wet’ look when I dry brush it on, I have to do it really lightly since this stuff is no joke in the shimmer department!

Adanath: Ha! I hadn’t even noticed that but I looked at the pic again and you’re right it does work as the water! lol

Beautiful so far!! I know I’ve said this before, but I just love looking at WIPs!!! The process always amazes me.

Your blanket appy was really great too! Sooo realistic looking 🙂

          You are really talented 🙂

            Aw thanks you guys!

I finally got her tail to a place I’m happy with and am now varnishing her, I’ll decide after that what her final finish will be. If all goes well and there are no set backs I can put her sale ad up next week!

I already know what my next PYO victims will be now! A Foo father and a Kitsune, I have plans…..*laughs maniacally*

Question: Has anyone used the Liquitex matte varnish? I have it and it will not matte anything, which is weird since the very first time I used it was on my roan appy PYO and it worked beautifully! Now it works like a satin glossy finish, which is pretty annoying.

Le sigh, I suppose it’s back to matte sprays for now. >.>

EDIT/UPDATE**** Thanks to an awesome forum member, my matte varnish woes have been solved!!!!!!!! Apparently all I needed to do was shake the bottle vigorously, the opposite of what I was doing lol. I tried it out today on one of my unicorn resins and I got the matte finish I wanted! 😀

The photos aren’t showing for me, or not at the moment (6 June, 6:00 pm EDT).

I’ve finally finished my Hippocampus, who’ve I’ve named ‘Andromeda’ for the time being. Something about finally getting to glue in the eyes just brings the whole sculpt to life.

Here are the pics, it was kinda gloomy out and not too much sun, but here we are!

It’s hard to see the shimmers and sparkles on her but this flash picture seems to show it a bit

In general I’m not much one for pastels, particularly pinks. In spite of my bias, though, I think she looks lovely and the ombre effects you have between the dark blue and the light pink are very well done.

Rather than Andromeda you might’ve called her Sylvie…especially with her being right in front of her buddy Sylveon in that last picture. 😉

Ha, I didn’t even think of Sylvie(Or even Nymphia!), her coloring works for that!
