I got my second one today, he’s pretty awesome. His name is “Ptolemy” which is awesome. Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemy_(name)

Yeah so I’m n00b at history and had no idea. Him and Claudius would make a neat set 😛 I’m also SUPER annoyed because I got charged freaking customs on him! It kind of proves customs really picks and chooses when to charge you. I got violet a few weeks ago and paid nothing, and I got 2 grab bags from a batch ages ago so the price was higher and didn’t get charged. Shenanigans! xD

Pictures! He’s a bald face sabinoey coppey chestnut. These pictures kind of suck and I will try to get nicer ones later.

I like the blending on the spots a lot, there’s black shading on the copper side and especially on the face it’s gorgeous! His body is slightly more purple than the mane, which is very copper. His crystals are dark orange, I dunno what the actual colour is called 🙂

I’m not totally opposed to trading him but am probably going to keep him for now.

Ptolemy is really nice. We’ve seen a lot of unis with a similar pattern and colours, but the blending and copper mane really set it off handsomely.

It also gives me hope that my unis will arrive today. *sits impatiently waiting for postman*

Too many bald faces in the second batch 🙁 *sad* Kind of makes me a little annoyed.. how were these harder to paint?

Many of them have contrasting manes/tails, so they had to take the time to keep them from bleeding onto the bodies. Plus, each was individually done with different colors of paint. I imagine it was semi-assembly line, using one base color for a small group, but then, many of them have a different interference over that. Mine was probably fairly simple to paint because Melody didn’t have to keep the interference only on particular spots. But then, she has a mane, tail, and hooves that are a completely different color than her solid body.

(By the way, feel free to use my photos of Daphne in the directory.)

I see your point ghostndragon, but it still sticks out to me that pattern-wise (as you are saying), the unis aren’t really any different from previous batches. In fact, the bald-faces in particular are obviously done with a stencil, which seems like it would be a whole lot easier than freehanding everything.

I dont know, I’m just disappointed because I feel like $20 was a pretty big price hike for a lot of these unis. There are a few in particular that I am SURE took longer than others, but for the most part these resemble the first few batches of unis, plus a splash of interference :/ This leaves me with the feeling that the majority of us paid more for extra work done on a minority of the unis.

I could understand if it cost more supply-wise to get these done – they are using MORE things after all – metallic paints and interference in particular. But not only would $20 be a really big price increase for the amount they would be using on the unis, but it’s not the reason that was given for the increase in general. I dunno, it just bugs me.

Not defending the price hike per se but I have noticed on the newer unicorns they have way fewer flaws in the paint. There is a lot more obvious small brush detail, and the blending is way better. A lot of the old ones, even like Cyprus or Wisteria, it’s very obvious the spots are just done with an airbrush, and they look like airbrush spots rather than painted pinto spots. Sometimes you get the little “holes” where there’s a spot under the airbrush mark that is slightly lighter. A lot of the babies and some of the youngs too have grey or darker highlights on their knees and noses. I noticed especially in the palominos with grey points that the markings are not blended too nicely, and again look obviously done with an airbrush. The new ones don’t seem to have this problem.

However, I think the more recent youngs and babies had fewer flaws than older batches and didn’t cost more. And the new ones do still have little flaws. Ptolemy has little brown flecks of paint on his face, and what looks like a little casting defect on his nose. But I kind of think it gives them character. :/ (edit: so I noticed that all the white patches on him have little gold flecks, maybe it was done on purpose lol)

Anyway, I’m not sure what my point is. I figure, people are willing to pay it and they sell out anyway, so the price increase makes sense that way.

I was happily assuming the higher price hike would lead to even better things, like hiring more painters to paint production pieces so Melody can keep filling our never-ending LP and grab bag cravings…like grab bag fledgling dragons!!! So, if higher prices means more profit means hiring a bigger staff means Melody paints some grab bag dragons…then I’m totally okay with shelling out an additional $20 for grab bag pony fun.

All good points. I mean obviously I got 2 unis so I was willing to pay it, it just rubs me the wrong way when the official company reason for it doesn’t seem to make sense.

Well, too, you’ve got to think, ALL of these grab bag unis have at least SOME interference on them. I can’t imagine that interference paint is the same cost as regular paint. And Melody made stencils to airbrush these in, and that takes time too. I mean, the few people selling their youngs from this batch are getting $150-$325 for one unicorn-so there are people that really love these unis, even more than the $130. Personally I love the bald face ones. They remind me of Clydesdales. I also like the contrast of white plus a shade of brown against it.

Yeah, I mentioned this already. Still, the amount of interference on each of these unis is NOT equal to $20 each. I get my interference for $6.00 per tube, and a tube lasts me 6 months. Yes, I know I don’t paint as much as Windstone does, but I do have a pretty firm understanding of how much interference is on these unis, and it’s not very much.

Stencils may take time to make, but they cut down the time it takes to paint, say, 50 unis.

All I’m saying is that it doesn’t seem to add up, and I would have been happier if the $20 increase had a different “reasoning” behind it – or heck, no reasoning at all! I just can’t buy that ALL these unicorns took significantly longer than the old unis to paint, and for whatever reason that has stuck in my mind ever since I got my 2 unis from the factory, who could have come from the old batches themselves had they not had some interference on them.

                      *shrug*
