I’m with emerald – I’m afraid of falling but not of heights. I thought I was the only weird one about that. I’ve never tried skiing because of the whole falling thing but mountains, planes etc really don’t bug me. It’s just the thought of falling that does me in.
January 8, 2007 at 7:27 pm #524932I think I might actually have the falling thing too, because planes don’t bother me.
But mountaintops do, but I think that’s the open spaces thing. There’s nothing more exposed and open than a mountaintop. *shiver*
January 8, 2007 at 8:56 pm #524933I-m afraid of breaking a leg or arm and being unable to go outside or write on my laptop or just do stuff. Which makes me a very slow snowboarder… And I-m always real cautious of electric fences. I hate getting zapped.
January 8, 2007 at 9:02 pm #524934Have you been zapped before?
January 8, 2007 at 9:10 pm #524935You betcha. We have elctric fences around the horses, and our neighbor, a sheep farmer, uses them to keep his woolies in. I get yapped every so often taking water out to the pony. It doesn-t even hurt or anything, but it-s just the sudden surprise – and the reeling if I get yapped on the head. Mostly what I-m afraid of is bigger voltage. I jump out of my skin every time my brother britzles with his 900000 volt zapper.

Um… I like getting zapped. I got tasered once. It’s kind of a funny story. Not a police taser though, I hear those are a lot stronger than the kind that civilian types can buy.
January 8, 2007 at 9:17 pm #524937I’m very logically fascinated with spiders, I think they’re really cool. But, I have an irrational phobia of them. The totally irrational, my brain has nothing to do with this, kind of phobia. I can deal with them at a distance and even get close to look. I’ve handled tarantulas before and don’t have any problem shooing them (spiders in general) outside, etc. I just can’t bring myself to walk into an area that’s spiderwebby or has potential of unseen spiders. D:
I also have a random fear of unnaturally tall plants. I love trees and large plants. I’m talking like a 50′ sunflower or something. That’d scare the crap out of me… and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. Anyone remember the unnaturally huge dandilion in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III movie? The one about the mutating agent? THAT SCARED ME.
I have no idea what’s wrong with me.
I’m also one of those people that has terrible strong urges to leap from high places. I love being up high. (No I’d never really jump!)

I have been shocked before and I know the sudden surprise. Of course the voltage probably wasn’t as big as a electric fence.

Do tell…
January 8, 2007 at 9:46 pm #524940Well… I hope this isn’t too racy for the forum. It probably isn’t.
Anyhow, I was at a really freaky (in a good way!) goth club a few years ago. (Good grief, has it been that long?!) And they had this monthly fetish night, where people would dress up extra-weird, and they’d have booths and demos of strange kinky stuff. It was really fascinating, though some of the things I saw realy made me cringe. (I don’t like needles, for example, so the corset piercing gave me the heebie-jeebies.)
Anyhow, this one night there was a demonstration of electricity play going on. This gal had a widget called a violet wand, that’s basically a glorified static electricity generator, and was showing how to safely use it on people. She zapped me a couple of times, which was plenty fun. (It’s a very mild shock, like when you’ve got socks on and touch a doorknob, except instead of just one tiny *zap* it’s a little string of them, *zapzapzapzapz!*) Then she got out the taser! I with I could remember the voltage on it, it was high enough to sound really intimidating! Right about then a group of firemen came through the club. They had a habit of going around the clubs every so often, collecting forsome charity or other. Drunken people are more likely to donate money, apparently. Anyhow, they asked the gal doing the demo if she’d donate, and she said she would, but only if the firemen would let her taser them.
They were all looking kinda scared at this. I think none of them quite wanted to say “no way,” but none of them really wanted to do it either. So the demo gal said “here, I’ll show you it’s okay,” and looked around for a volunteer. I’d been wanting to try it, so I stepped forward, and got a good zap right on the upper arm. It really startles you, and makes your arm twitch, but it doesn’t exactly hurt. Then the gal said “If this delicate female here can get zapped, you big brawny men can too.” Which really made me laugh! I am very small and skinny, but I was dressed sort of mild-industrial-goth and not really looking “delicate.” But that shamed them all into letting her, so she zapped them and gave them $10 each, I think.
January 8, 2007 at 9:52 pm #524941Cool story:) I have been to goth shows like that, but have only seen jewelry and clothes for sale.
January 8, 2007 at 9:53 pm #524942haha, that is a funny story. I know when I have gone to laser appts for my under my arms…it sends a pulse down my arm. It feels really weird and leaves my arm numb for a couple of hours after.
January 8, 2007 at 11:03 pm #524943Spiders and heights, slowly developing a fear of large crowds. (That’s why I hate Christmas, I can’t stand all the people).
The spider phobia is a weird thing. I wasn’t afraid of spiders until after a friend of mine was bit. I remember asking my mom where he was. She told me that he was in the hospital because of a spider bite and since then I can’t stand spiders. I’m not so bad now. My appartment was overrun by spiders. Thanks to my cats that soon ended. But, I didn’t have cats for the first few years I lived here. Ewww….January 8, 2007 at 11:13 pm #524944Count me as one of those germ phobes. I don’t wear gloves all the time, no, but I have rules about when I have to wash my hands, like after I touch a trash can or after I blow my nose. It’s not fun during the winter and when I have a cold- dry hands. XP
To be honest, my mind isn’t the most well-put together and I have social phobia- being in large groups are crowds kinda freak me out. I get clausterphobic when surrounded by dozens of people. Again, not fun, and it did NOT come in handy when I was shortly attending college. 😡
Yeah most of my phobias are more serious than funny, sorry. I’m scared of needles. I can watch House, Scrubs, and MASH all the time just fine, but when they get out the needlees: AHHHHHHHHHH!
January 8, 2007 at 11:18 pm #524945My friend said that she did a test in college. They had to go around and swap things and see where the most bacteria grows. Guess who the winner was?
The trashcan. It was even cleaner than the toilet.
