Wheeee! I got papa Cheetah. 😀 Could mama possibly have a grey-eye chance though? My chicks didn’t inherit the orange eyes I requested for Osiris.

(About time I got a new male griff – Navarre is outnumbered literally 10 to 1 by formels and chicks!)

The trainer at the Birmingham Zoo, when I was docenting there, had a scarlet macaw that had been ‘donated’ largely because she wouldn’t stop screaming. Part of the retraining involved putting the scream on command (why bother to scream if you don’t get anything for it?), which meant it could then be ‘displayed’ for people who thought they might want a pretty bird like that, ‘and they’re easy to take care of, aren’t they?’

Am so glad the dragons are quieter than macaws!

So lovely, but having just gotten a pair of kitty trios, I’d better pass right now.

I use my Wii all the time. Currently, it’s wandering back and forth between WiiFit, Okami, and one or the other of the Super Mario Galaxies (when I get stuck on one, I switch to the other). Ecco was one of the few games I had on my Genesis, and I now have it on the Virtual Console (Nintendo’s term for the downloadable old games). Those were the days when I was very selective; I had Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, &3, an X-Men game, and Ecco. Then I went to vet school and realized at the end of the first year that the Genesis was still boxed up in the closet. Unfortunately, I then made the critical error of selling it off to a game shop, for something like $30 for the unit (still in excellent condition, with box and all documentation) and all the games (ditto). Very bad deal, as I came to realize later. A lot later I got a Gamecube, and currently have Gamecube (Sonic the Hedgehog, Pokemon, and Legend of Zelda), GBA (same categories), DS (same, also Professor Layton and Mario and Luigi), and Wii (same plus other stuff). I also have a PS3, but it’s mainly used as a Bluray player – I have little to no interest in the sports and FPS titles. And a PSP, purely because Sonic Rivals 1&2 are exclusive to that console, although it came with a rather nice Star Wars game.

As you might guess, I’m a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan, at least as far as the games go. I have every currently available Sonic the Hedgehog game, but am going to have to do without Sonic Free Riders, unless they release it for Wii or PS3. (I think the balance board and Wiimote/nunchuk should work just as well as the Kinect attachment for registering hand and weight shifts.) I really wish Sega’d stop putting exclusive Sonics on so many consoles.

The golden dun that’s up for auction right now is lovely; good contrast between the white and the colored parts, and good contrast between it and the extant unis (black, white, or grulla). He’d accent any or all of the above beautifully, or as a solo color.

That pattern just looks so perfect on that oriental. And I love the black and white plume on his tail. I think he’s also reminding me a bit of those terra-cotta warriors with that color; it just seems so right for him.

Oooooh, at that cheetah flapcat. But I’ll concede her to the other bidders; that’s the sibling to my griff chick. I’ll just go hide him while everyone’s staring at Cheetoh. *tucks chick behind stack of boxes*

in reply to: PYO Griffins in store! #821341

There were eight griffins and a wolf when I peeked at work, so I had to quick-set-up-my-laptop so I could order one. I got the wolf and a griffin, but didn’t really have time to post about them. It’s the first time I’ve seen non-Muse PYOs in the store.

in reply to: Need clarifiation of SILVER vs. SLATE Unicorns #821120

I lucked out and caught the silver parents in-store, but have no young of either color. I’d like to get at least a baby and young of either color to complete the family. (Ideally I’d like a family of each, of course!)When there are unis available, of course. No point in demanding people paint non-existent sculptures, after all – it gets paint all over the desk.

    Oh, congrats! He’s gorgeous!

in reply to: The OLD Ebay Cart Thread #802827

Yes, but since there are three pairs of cheetah chicks (if I remember correctly) they can’t all end up in the same home. At least, I have a chick, and am planning to bid on the sib, but I didn’t get the first pair, and won’t bid on either of the third. Perhaps those of us who end up with the chicks will have to get together and set up a custody rotation for the parents. 😀 The question is, what color with the eyes be? (I vote grey! 😀 )

Second question: Once you have a place to put a taxidermied, rearing horse, how do you get him from where he is to where you want him?

With blue eyes that griffy chick could almost pass for a baby siamese – tailtip, ears and smudgy nose! Love the subtle coloring.

    in reply to: Owls #820652

Owls do fly silently. It drove me berserk in the Harry Potter movies when they went flap-flap-flap. (Except in the Great Hall, then I could convince myself it was the mail they were carrying rustling, not the wings, lol.)

It’s not the number of feathers; it’s the fact that owl feathers are softer, especially around the edges, so they flex instead of cutting through the air. I docented at the Birmingham Zoo for several years (i.e. talked to people and school groups about animals, in the zoo and in general) and in the education stuff there was a pair of preserved wings, one from an owl and one from a duck. It was very easy to feel the difference between the feathers on the wings and when I ‘flapped’ them, the duck went whisss, and the owl went . Not a sound. Besides, we had several families of screech owls nest in my yard growing up, and when they got territorial the first thing you knew about it was when you got a headful of claws. Never a whisper of sound to warn you they were there.

My parents’ cat used to sit on top of my gerbil aquaria when I was home from college. Fortunately, I’d refused to get the flimsy screen tops and had either hard plastic or welded mesh, or he’d have been right in there with them. The gerbils were perpetually puzzled by the cat and kept jumping up to get a better look, which of course kept Peter at his post to watch the ‘living popcorns’.
