My fave fantasy novelist was Ursula K LeGuin with the Earthsea Trilogy. I read her and a bunch of Jane Yolen throughout my younger years. Tolken and Jordan were both too verbose for me to really get into. I enjoy a world that pulls you in immediately.
I’ve been hesitant to pick up King due to my overactive imagination, the whole Slenderman thing that was floating around a few years back gave me nightmares for a few nights, but I’ve heard many good things about Dark Tower. I’ll look into it.
Pancake is adorable even when she’s giving you the eyeroll!
Landipan, I once got my name dumped into one of those romance novel sweepstakes from way back when and would up with three Harlequin Super Romances. It’s been a while and when I moved they got lost in the shuffle. Maybe I should try another one now.
Melody, that looks to be a fascinating read! Maybe I should throw some more non-fiction into the mix as well. I’ve been woefully under representing the humanities in favor of shorter reads to pass the time.
Etruscan, yes it is. My friend enjoyed the gimmick in them and I had mentioned that I saw an entire series in the library based around a tea shop, so she thought I might get a kick out of this one. It’s kind fun how they have little recipes and stuff in the back of the book as well.
Bodine, that’s why I mostly wind up reading short fiction and thinner books. I could never get through many of the extra thick multi-novel series that most of my friends read when I was younger. I mostly went for anthologies or novellas. I’ve also been thinking of trying out audiobooks since I’ve been enjoying podcasts. Though I might fall asleep to some of those myself.
I’d been meaning to post my dog as well. He’s only 3 years old. We got him shortly after our corgi Einstein passed away from spleen cancer. His mom was dropped off at the pound while she was pregnant so we got him as soon as he was weened. He’s a border collie/blue heeler cross and way too smart for his own good. We named him Indiana Jones and he grew into the name as it’s almost impossible to keep him from exploring everywhere. He works at the shoe store downtown and greets the incoming customers when he’s not begging for treats. He’s also very fond of snuggling under the covers when it’s cold since he doesn’t have a very shaggy coat.
Currently we are just putting up regular production items. We prefer customers come here but Amazon gives us a chance to get a broader audience to come over, see the community and everything else we have to offer.
Nope! Gone through it all myself too. I wrote a NaNoWriMo movel back in 2006 that I proceeded to edit and rewrite for the next six years. I’d occasionally farm it out to agents or publishers and either get nothing or rejection letters, so I wound up self-publishing it in 2013. Mostly to get the chance to monkey around with the self publishing world and tools. Also to get the manuscript out of my head so I could focus on other things.
I know all too well about the trials and tribulations of trying to write. I’ve got a story that waffles between novel and novella that I will open, stare at, write a couple of lines, have my stomach leap into my throat and then quickly close. I’ve been trying to get more done on it but it’s already been through three full rewrites and the bad guy kinda became a good guy and I dumped a whole slew of extraneous characters.
Still, that feeling I got when I saw a book a wrote on the shelf at a local bookstore was just amazing and intoxicating. I really want to feel that way again. And maybe earn enough to pay rent too, if I’m lucky! π
Having been a late comer to all this, are you comfortable giving me a synopsis of your story, dragonmedley? I do enjoy dragon stories. As surprising as that may be. π
Bodine’s right, it’s not a hard hobby to get into. Aside from getting a machine but there are usually some good workhorse options at thrift stores and the like if you don’t want to spend too much money.
So in the interest of not making this thread too long, where do you all tend to gather in the forums? It’s been a while since I’ve been on one and I don’t want to barge into anything unawares. π
Sewing can be very fun. I’ve done some projects myself and took a theatrical costume class in college. I keep meaning to get back into it but I always forget how to thread my machine!
It does seem like there’s not enough time in the day to do it all but I still want to do more.
Fair enough. That’s why I thought it best to start here and get to know some people. π
P.S. I’m not insulted. I know there’s plenty of stuff I’m interested in that makes people yawn. Even the ones who are the same age as me. π
Thanks for the welcome! I’m just helping out with some computer stuff. I was working for another local company doing eCommerce stuff and Windstone was looking for a part-timer to help out. I’m helping them dip their toe into a few other places like Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/handmade/Windstone-Editions) to help get the word out to other people about just how awesome their stuff is.
I have not gotten a figurine myself yet. It’s only been a couple of weeks so far and I’m trying to not simply spend the whole paycheck every time I have to head into the factory area! I am certainly eyeing a few.
I’d brought up podcasts since it was something I picked up as a background noise for when I’m doing chores around the house or on long drives. They’re pretty much a modern take on radio shows, but less of the morning shock jock type and more of the interview and casual conversation type. You can download them and listen to them on a phone or computer, so it’s portable and much less prone to crackling if you head into a rural area. Guess they aren’t quite as ubiquitous as I thought. π
Sounds like there are quite a few artists here as well. Do you all limit your expression to figurines or do you do paintings, drawings, etc? I’ve done a few Bob Ross landscapes with a friend of mine before she moved away and I keep meaning to get back into it.
