Yes, in a way. I took inspiration from my favorite one. The rooster :> But I don’t have a photo I’m “working off of”. So, I guess it’s both? lol.
Wow, that’s doubly good! I’m terrible at remembering patterns, especially on feathers – he looks genuine, like you were looking at a picture while you painted!

He’s looking great! Are you using any particular bird for a reference or just painting out of your head? That sounded odd, but I think you know what I mean.

Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!Alright so I’m done painting one of them – it just needs interference and the topcoat (and its eyes to be glued in of course!) – the second one is well on its way, should be done sometime tomorrow. Goodness, this has been more challenging than I thought it would be! I love painting these birds but after a while you just ache to do something else π my fault for deciding to do 2 at once though – I just wanted the colors to be exactly the same!
I think I did a decent job matching the color to the original – he’s the shinier one on the left in the first pic, and the one on the right in the second. (sorry again for the crappy cell phone pics – when they’re all done I’ll get a decent ‘triplet’ shot)
taken last night before I did the backs of the wings:
And tonight, all the painting but the interference done:

π Thanks π I’m holding out hope that they will make some keepers for the holidays – I’ve been dying to get my hands on one!

Please visit My Webpage to see my art and PYO's that I've done in the past!I think some people here may think I’m crazy after hearing this, but I only use 2 different paintbrushes for all of my PYOs – a #6 Filburt and a #0 Round – both are American Painter brand and I believe they’ve got synthetic bristles but I’m not positive on that. I sit in Michaels for about 20 minutes just feeling the texture of paintbrushes before I buy them π
Using these brushes I can gain access to a lot of detail, not sure if that’s what your wife is after or not – it can definitely get pretty tedious! I also use Liquitex Soft Body paints and Golden interference paints to give it that shiny luster.
You may also think about grabbing your wife a bottle of Retarder (Golden sells it for about 8 bucks) – when added to paints it lengthens the drying time so the paints in your palette don’t dry so fast and also the paint on the figurine take longer – in case she’s looking to keep it workable for a while.
Good luck to her, and you should definitely get her on the forums once she’s gotten her Kirin – we’d love to see her work!

I’m not using either π it’s a terrible photo as far as color quality goes – came from my cell phone. For these guys my palette has only had blue, tan, cream and brown on it so on the tail feathers when it gets to the darkest blue and brown spots, i blend them directly and then add an extra bit of blue to the parts that look too greenish.

I took this picture so I could show my boyfriend how things were going and I thought the image of so many phoenixes together in one spot should be shared π

I took some pictures with my cell phone as I was painting him – he took 20 hours to get done, and I blame the scales! I love how he turned out though. His scales remind me of an artichoke, so I’ve named his paint scheme just that. My boyfriend piped up with the idea of shortening it to Artie, and I think the name is cute and suits him well. So, Artie it is!
I made an image out of the pictures I took with my cell phone, also describing what I was doing in each picture. The picture quality isn’t good but I think you can see decently the different changes that came about as I was painting him. Finished pictures are at the end π
(This image is too big for the forums, so if you’d like to see/read it, follow this link:)

And finally – finished pictures! The only thing that I changed from the last step to these images was that I antiqued the pebbly scales. These pics were also taken in the late afternoon sunlight so he looks a little more green than he does in person and in normal inside light. Still, I think they came out well π
And Artie with his fuzzy – my very first, with adorable gold eyes! I love him!

Thing is, I paint in a several different ways, so this way might not be the same way for the next pyo! X3I know what you mean, I do the same thing – in the hopes that I can find the “perfect” way of painting one. I don’t think I’ll ever find it π
I’d still love to see if you remember to π
