OH YA I’m completely rediculous too. My husband just laughs at me and shakes his head. First thing I check once I get coffee in me in the morning. I always forget to log out to so it looks like I am on here 24/7.

You don’t need a super fancy camera to catch lighting, it just needs to have a manual setting ability 🙂 – You set the settings a certain way, tripod the camera and take long exposures 🙂

If you look at the treeline on your whirlwind lightning (Congrats on catching a bolt by hand, I tried that for years and never had any success! lol) – what happened was the cameras natural settings made it a longer exposure, so your movement was recorded. – Long exposures = The shutter stays open longer, and captures all of the light that comes through in that time and combines it into one image. – Ever take a photo indoors and have it get all blurry? That’s why!
But when the camera is on a tripod, it isn’t moving, and so long as your subject isn’t moving, you’ll get a nice crisp photo! 🙂

Here are a couple of my faves from this last summer.
They’re photographed with my Sony a55 and I did study quite a bit on how to do them (And I found myself with a lot of trial and error shots!) – Point and shoots are fully capable of doing this! (I have some beautiful shots from my P&S camera of lightning, ‘n I relied on it for many years. Honest truth is, they can and do compete with basic DSLR cameras without the price tags!
A big trick is gettin them while they’re not right on top of you (When a storm is above you its difficult to know which way to point the camera! When it’s closer, but not right over you, you know which way to point the camera! 😉 lol) and standing in a full on lightning storm with your camera isn’t for the faint of heart… I get a rush off it, some may find it unsafe ;p hahaha.

***There are links below each image to see the whole photo***
I need to work on color adjusting this one again (I had my white balance off, it’s been a work in progress to get the white balance where I wanted it since, lol)

These are taken once I started gettin an idea of what I was doing XD They remain some of the most exciting images I’ve created, in my personal opinion… I actually had hopes for a photographing a completely different storm than this (opposite direction, lol) I was disappointed to see it die off before it got close enough to properly photograph (and before it got dark enough to photograph easily. I’m still no good with day lightning, lol) I turned around ready to throw in the towel when I saw this one building in the distance behind me! and with Sunset colors *heart*! I spent the next 2 n a half hours standing in the middle of my country road photographing this storm. – So-worth-it! The early photos turned out to be the better of the batch, can’t beat the hints of orange!

and yes. Those white dots *are* stars 🙂

I can’t wait for spring/summer.. more storms to chase down! 🙂 My family and bf laugh at me, I hear the slightest rumble and I’m a two yr old in a toy store! Going to the window, watching for where it came from, debating on jumping in my truck and running it down… I’m also prone to haunting the weather reports XD

You have a great talent for the shot. That first image is beautiful Kay.
    Brilliant images

Thank you KaytanaPhoenix.I have a dinosaur camera at the moment but when I upgrade I will definetly contact you.I don’t know much about it except for pointing and snapping.I did catch a very cool shot of lightning one time by standing out in the yard during a lightning storm but I got it! Problem is,when I transferred it to my old desk top and then transferred it to this laptop, the file is strange.I can open it and see them but when I try to share ,they cannot.Any help with that? The lightning was so hot it is a twister.Cool shot really.I would love to share it,help? Thanks.
Okay,I poked around and figured it out! This is one of four but the best one.Caught with a little $100 digital camera.Love lightning!

I have asked this question myself since I got a PYO Keeper for Christmas and I am also afraid to start painting it without practicing on some sort of lineart first.

I sent a message to Melody through Deviantart saying:
I don’t really know where to ask this and I know your really busy, but I was wondering what you thought of making line-art’s for the PYO’s so that people could practice coloring them before they start working on the actual piece. I am getting my very first PYO for Christmas and I thought this would be really helpful for any first time painters.

I have already tried making rough sketches of the keeper dragon to practice coloring him but I’m not very good at drawing all the details. I also tried printing out the picture of the keeper to practice coloring that but the details don’t really show up very well there either.

    Thanks for your time!

    -Sarah

I got a message Back from Melody saying:
    Yes I have!
I actually did several coloring book style drawings, but we got stalled on this project because of copyright questions about it… I think we are being way paranoid, but that is what lawyers do to your head. I’ll bring up the subject again at Windstone.

Like I said above, I’ve tried printing out the blank PYO pictures from the store and have been using that as a sort of lineart, but it’s really hard to see the details in the picture.

    Hope this helps anyway! 🙂

I get what you mean Silver Fox, it does not print a great detail image and I really hope that we can get some line art for all of the PYO. It would be so incredibly helpful, especially to the “new to painting” individuals. I am scared to wreck a PYO because of my lack of skills. God I hope I have a little talent hidden somewhere in me.

that picture is pretty awesome! I am hoping Melody will make a print out of it. We’re long over due for some 2D Windstone art 😉 There is no print or drawing of a keeper, but what I’ve done in the past is take a photograph of a white, blank keeper (like from the store page) and phtotoshop different colors on it to play around with it.

Thanks for the advice Wolfen I appreciate it. I will have to try that but I am a really crappy photographer so it may no turn out “Good” HEHE I’ll give it a whirl though.

I don’t know if that emp is one of them, but there are defiantly some coloring book images in existence. (I don’t know what they are – I’ve just been told about them!)

If this is something people are interested in, I can talk to John and Melody about getting them up on the site. This is something on their list, it just hasn’t worked its way up to the top yet. 🙂

This would be brilliant and ohh so appreciated Kiya. Would be incredibly helpful for laying out ideas without having to “practice” on the beautiful PYOs and end up making a disaster (Speaking for myself of course and no ill intent meant to the many talented artist on this forum). I just saw that image in the background and thought that it would be so helpful in the Keeper or any/all PYOs.

in reply to: Ebay questionable item ??? Maybe Yes Maybe No, you tell me #871533

I’m also pretty sure it’s the angle of the picture, a shot from above at a weird angle.

Thanks LIH that was what I was wondering and you guys would know better than I.
I’ll shut up now and stop askin stupid questions!!! LOL

in reply to: Ebay questionable item ??? Maybe Yes Maybe No, you tell me #871531

Do you mean that it’s not really what it’s listed at?

It looks legitimate to me. A badly damaged white scratcher. And the seller has photographed the damage and is describing it accurately.

I’m not sure if the conditions listed in his auction would all stand up to ebay rules of buyer and seller protection, but I don’t really see anything questionable about the item itself.

No I did not mean that he is not really what he is listed as, I meant my brain is trying to wrap around what the heck looks off. hehe He looks like he is missing a chunk. He seems to be leaning really far forward almost laying down. Looking at my own scratcher……he is sitting up high and chest and head back. Maybe it is just the angle of the pic.

Not trying to question legitimacy….only my own brain and how it sees things. LOL
Thought I’d check with the pros on here.

No ill intent meant by this question

If the servers could have handled the load, I think it would have been under five minutes for them to sell out.

    I agree! It was nuts!

‘n I’m just givin ya’ll hell 🙂 No one expected it to go like that, thank god it was 1 per!

I feel sorry for those working the site host at that moment..

I agree Skeeter! It was Windstone ed of Black friday! Usually I don’t bother with things that go crazy like that, but this was something I made up my mind on! Even if I got one of the babys I didn’t like as much, it’s a great investment XD but I like about 50% (possible more than that even) of em! so we’ll see! lol. ‘n the rest are super cute! Just not quite my taste 🙂 So Melody did an AMAZING job on these! She must be proud of her lil babys that they sold so fast!

‘n Thanks Bodine! I do jump with both feet.. like I mentioned before *someplace* I’ve been wonderin how many people wondered where the hell I came from XD hahaha

Congrats to all who got them!! So excited to see them!! (I hope to see photos of everyones! I wanna see a good photo of them, they’re a lil hard to see on the class photo, lol)

    Your enthusiasm is infectious Kay
It is so refreshing to see someone just be who they are and live life happy and excited. Your joy comes through in your written word. You excitement makes me smile!

Congrats to all on your new additions to the family. Hope you love them when they arrive.
