you know, i was going to get the red/black/gold one for my boyfriend (ok, for me in the guise of giving it to my boyfriend.) the school where he works at has a mascot which is a kirin and those are his school’s colors.
the design on the side reminds me of fractals. they are a really nice detail. its gorgeous, i hope it finds a wonderful home.
wow, how cool to have a kirin as your school mascot! Thanks for your compliments! The markings on his side were actually inspired by the largemouth bass fish. I looked at one of these fish when coming up with the design idea for his scale markings.

I didn’t see it here…but I could have missed it.

A windstone guinea pig would be so cute I bet! I myself would love to have that armadillo and hatching t-rex!!
Oh thank goodness. I really wanted a red flame but didn’t wanna pay the jacked up eBay prices. Yay!
😯 He is so lovely. At first I thought his horn was silver, it looks silver in that first photo I guess because of the lighting on it. I like how you shaded each individual scale, the end effect it gives off is awesome!
I think it looks awesome so far! Good call on making the wings look more like the peacock tail feathers! That was really creative. That piece is going to be irredescent color heaven 😉 I can’t wait to see it when you get done!
I know you guys, I am tickled to death that my lil’ pinto is so high! THANK YOU! Honestly I am surprised by how much people like him as I thought the black and red one would be more popular.
Yes, I am always up for color suggestions. I am so happy that people seem to like the pinto as they are my favorite horse color to paint. And I like to do appaloosas sometimes too. I can paint blanket appaloosa but I warn you I am not a good painter of varnish appaloosas. Leopard appies and blanket appies I can do.
Thanks again!!
Awww, they are so cute! I am waiting for the brownish colored ones myself. But those white ones are adorable too!
Thank you guys so much for your compliments! I like how both of them came out. They took me a bit longer than the others, I’ve had strep throat. Everyone likes the lil’ pinto but I really thought the black flame one would be more popular. Eh, shows what I know. 😛
Congrats, Ski! You’re new addition is so beyond awesome!!! 😀
A red and black one and a brown pinto one.
Link to my auctions here. Thanks for lookin’!

Finally completed…. Let me know what you think.
Photos here:
http://community.webshots.com/album/557749626TEAESt?start=36One I call ‘black flame’ for obvious reasons. For those interested, all the black on him was hand painted. His scales were basecoated in airbrush, first a layer of yellow, then a layer of orange, then red. Hand painting was also used on the scales for detail work. Pearl ex powdered pigment was used to give the goldish highlights within the fur and a slight metallic tint within the scales.
The other one is a lil’ pinto. He’s painted in an equine color called dark liver chestnut w/ shaded flaxen color tail. My first attempt at a pinto kirin. This piece has more airbrushing than the others I’ve done. His entire brown coat is all airbrush. The only handpainting done was the white markings, the tail, the pinking, and little bits of detail work here and there. You can see in the pattern detail on the scales, ‘hairing’ around the edges of the white pattern. This was a blonde moment on my part, as it did not dawn on me during painting that ‘hairing’ would not be appropriate when dealing with scales. . But, I just left him as is since I didn’t realize that until very recently. He’s already sealed and everything, and I just don’t really have the energy to go back in and rework him. I like the pinto kirin concept though.
Both are ebay pieces, should be online sometime tonight.
Thanks for looking!

lol…niiiccceee phil. Yep, this statement pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I would probably omit the kindness aspect of it though.
bluepony I think I know who you’re talking about. Well, I don’t know her name but she’s on various model horse forums, right? If it’s who I’m thinking it is…she’s an idiot. She’s definantly one of those people who’s words should go in one ear and out the other. Please don’t waste another millisecond of your life being concerned with anything she’s said.
For a loooonnng time I refused to accept people who could draw on the computer as artists. I thought that computer art was not art, it was art made by a machine and not a human. But, I realized, that I was an idiot. Art is in a person’s imagination. If a person has a beautiful idea in their head, who cares what medium they used to bring it alive? Like everyone else said, it just matters what the quality of your finished piece is like, regardless of what medium was used. You just gotta find what works best for YOU. 😉
You can also try thinning down your acrylics with water a little bit. That has helped alot when I’m blending. I’ll get them thinned down to where they look more like watercolors than acrylics at times, and just do several layers of washes on top of another color to get the kind of blending I want. Though I admit I don’t know what brand of paint you are using, so I dunno if this will work or not. I’ve noticed a lot of people like to use the FolkArt and AppleBarrel brand paints and I’ve never tried those. I use alot of Liquitex brand and Golden brand. I already shipped out my kiRin and dragon otherwise I’d hook you up with close up shots of the Kirin scales. My Kirin did have a little bit of brush strokes in his large belly scales.
With pastels, typically, I have learned that the more you spend on them, the better pigment quality you are going to get. I like to use Rembrant brand pastels personally. I have never tried the prismacolor brand pastels. I’ve used their watercolor pencils and colored pencils and LOVE them. Prismacolor probably does make a good quality chalk pastel too!
