I finally have my computer back. Good news nothing at all is wrong with it.
It still needs cleaned. Even though when I brought it in we discussed dusting, with the understanding that they would do it. I even mentioned it today when I called about it. But, I guess he didn’t have time. Now I’ll have to pull it apart and try to do it myself. When I went to pick it up today the person who got it asked me if I’d like them to do it. But, I don’t want to go without a computer another day. Plus, driving across the city to get it. Oh well…. It can’t be that hard… right?
So, I called Rogers to tell them about this and I was told “Oh your account was cleared yesterday, they determined that your computer isn’t sending out the signal anymore….” Ok, fine but, why didn’t they email or call? At least I know that there is nothing wrong. Except for dust… ($40 to find this out and another 25 if they had dusted it) Lucky for me I just got my income tax back.
Oh boy, so, my computer is at Stapes. They apparently couldn’t look at my computer on Friday so hopefully Tuesday I’ll get a phone call from them. They told me they would call me either Friday or Monday. But, Monday being a holiday I really don’t expect a call. I was so embarrassed, I forgot to clean up the outside (under the faceplate). Oh you could really tell I have long haired cats. So they are going to dust it as well. Oops….
I’m really hoping it was the drivers. I don’t want to find out I had a trojan horse hiding out.
I thought I encrypted my signal…. I’ll have to look into it when I get my computer back, maybe I turned off the password. I didn’t even think to check. I don’t remember putting in a password lately so I guess I did. That’ll teach me. 😳
I noticed that the email was very vague. I have no clue what they are even talking about. I had no luck with technical support. I’ve downloaded 4 antiviruses, updated them and ran them. They all came back with a few tracking cookies. 😕 So whatever this is about it’s not about a virus. I did have a malfunctioning driver but, that was fixed….. a few weeks ago….. about the same time as those queries…. Hum….. that could be the connection. But, if that’s it…. I had that fixed with an update.
Strangest part of all? I was at work when all of this happened. I leave before 10am. So, who’s been tapping into my connection? I wonder if the new neighbors are stealing my connection. It’s not cable it’s wireless…. So, it can be fairly easy to steal the signal.
I just hope I can get answers out of somebody somewhere. They finally left me an automated phone message that gave me a number to call if I have questions. Which I do. I just hope I can call them in the morning before work.
Called the number this morning. They told me oh we can’t remove viruses you have to call whatever number or get a technician to look at it. I wanted them to explain the email. Not tell me oh follow the directions in the email (which is for people without antivirus software, I now have 4 of them. I had 2 before this…) Oh well, I guess I’ll be dragging this awfully heavy tower to someone today. I was hoping to get some kind of help. Any at all would have been preferable to this.
I found a brand new intuos3 tablet for $169 in Quebec. It’ll be much less shipping then getting any in the states. They want $20 plus $4 for shipping and insurance. I’m sure the insurance is a rip off since it’s not that much to buy $100 of insurance (canada post comes with $100 insurance well at least to the states, I can’t remember for canada) Oh well. It’s better than paying $50 to $70 shipping that the sellers in the states want. Makes you wonder how it can be even close to that much. How big and heavy could it be? So once I get this computer trouble looked after I’ll buy that one.
They actually can… I don’t know if it’s my computer. But, here is sections from the email:
We have reason to believe that a computer connected through your Rogers Cable Modem has been infected by virus or has an application that is misconfigured.
Typically, these types of viruses do not affect the performance of your computer and instead carry out attacks and malicious activities behind the scenes, without your knowledge. This type of network activity has the potential to negatively impact the overall service. For your reference, we have included a technical summary of the activity for your reference at the bottom of this e-mail message.
To protect your computer and to safeguard other customers on the Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet network, we urge you to remove the virus as quickly as possible. This can usually be done by using an updated Anti-Virus program to scan all the computers connected to your cable modem and choosing to remove the viruses.
If you are unable to remove the virus within 48 hours, we will have to take additional steps to protect other customers and the Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet network including temporary service deactivation. Should this occur, we can reactivate your connection once the virus has been removed by calling into our call center.
If the network activity below is not the result of a Virus, we ask that you reconfigure any programs or hardware which is generating the network activity detailed below to reduce the amount of traffic or redirect it to another DNS Server.
High volumes of requests causing Error or Canned (127.0.0.1) responses usually indicate a Worm, Virus, or Bot infection. These viruses will usually attempt to connect to a controlling server or attempt to perform a Denial of Service attack on a specific server on the Internet. Once the desintation is identified, the owner of the server may remove or change the DNS entry causing future Virus infected computers to fail resolving the name. this causes an error to be generated.
These are the canned responses they are talking about:
Canned Queries = (Queries resolving to an unroutable IP address)

What I don’t understand are the dates…. why are they only for May 5 and 6th? If those are the only dates then wouldn’t I have already fixed this? 🙄
I’m going to see if I can get tech. support either on the phone (not my first try, I hate their phone systems, I’ve spent hours trying to get through before) or live chat with one. I’m hoping for live chat even though I’ll look like an idiot. I can achieve that over the phone quite easily as well. But, for some reason live chat is worse for me.

Typical may 24 weekend… beats me why people want to camp in that.
I don’t think I can get it now. Sadly something came up. I may not have internet for much longer if I can’t figure out what’s happening.
Apparently Rogers (internet provider) says I have either a virus or bot or something technical that needs fixed. If I don’t get it done right away they will cut off my internet. I will be able to get it back but, what a hassle. I’ve run AVG, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyWare and I’ll be running Ad-Aware soon. Nothing but a few run of the mill tracking cookies. 🙁 I guess tomorrow I’ll have to take my computer somewhere to see if they can figure it out. I really don’t need this right now. 🙄
Oh wow! That’s a great price. I’ll need to see if they will ship to Canada though.
Thank you that’s exactly what I wanted to know. I know Wacom is the best, but, I just couldn’t find any in my price range.

I’m a bit antsy, maybe we could split the difference by making it late summer/early fall? Names in August, shipping in early October?
Anytime’s good though. 😀
I think it’ll probably be something like that. But first, we need PYOs in the store!
That wouldn’t work for me, I’d be way to busy. But, right now I’ve been bad about finishing PYOs anyways.

I feel the same…. and with the eyes that I would like as well…. Oh well, hopefully soon….
Congratulations Ski! 😀
I hope the news is good. Hugs.
I’m so sorry Dragon. News like that is always hard. 😥
I wish I could have helped out with the last surprise and this newest surprise. I just don’t have any money…. 🙁
I would love to get a tablet. I just can’t draw with a mouse, I’ve tried and tried and tried. No luck. They all come out blobby and weird looking.
So, I’ve been looking at tablets. I would love a Wacom…. Sadly the coffers are pretty much empty. So, not having near enough to buy even the smallest wacom tablet. I’ve been looking at the Wacom bamboo fun, or the Genius MousePen. The Bamboo just doesn’t have the sensitivity I’d like. (512 level) They start at around $175 where I am.
The Genius MousePen has the sensitivity (1024 level) but, for the price is it any good? They run around $65 to $75 around here. One of the cons is it doesn’t have an eraser, kind of backwards I think.
So, my question is does any one have either one of these? Would you recommend it? (I wish there was a place where you could try them, then I’d know)
Welcome to the forums, well as a non lurker now. I’m sorry this happened. I would open a dispute with paypal. About the horn though, can you wiggle the horn? Is it loose? See the horns are deeply embedded in the head, if you force it out you can break the head.
I have a male kirin that is in pretty good condition, I’m fixing him up. Once I’m done I’m thinking of selling him for around what I paid for him. He was shipped in a tiny box with one piece of bubble wrap. But, most of the damage was from before he was shipped. The owner just didn’t want to admit it. I was very lucky that he wasn’t too terribly damaged. There is a post somewhere around here about it.
