I knew this would be fascinating. 😀 And thanks, Pegasi for the link; you always come through. I was wondering what happened to at least some of the pieces.

I’m just glad the search cooperated with me.

😛 I’ve got one project that’s somewhere in the range of having a 16 year intermission. It was supposed to be a 25th anniversary present for my parents; they just celebrated their 40th in December. 😆

Hey I just saw this! Amazing work on creating a mold! And that would scare the bejeezus out of me too! The re-paint looks great so far!

Thanks again for all the praise guys! 😀 I have a few days off this week (taking my vacation time discretely over the next few months while I search for a new job) so I might work on him! I got some good feedback from a few people so I am thinking of adding copper and perhaps some black stripes with copper and gold interference!

Totally awesome job dragOn this is what I use but add a little gupsum to the mix. Use gupsem board pulverised and add to the mix. I don’t know how to use apoxy at all. Tried doing a mold before. Now I see how to do it right. Thank you so much. Now I still have a Silver emperor that needs something better to hold him together on the bottom he is broken like yours but I have the piece. Just never found anything that will hold him back together permenently. An my last thought was drilling small holes into the pieces. Both sides and putting a stabliser (metal rods) in there then bringing back together and glueing him. What is your expert advise on this? I am handy with repair jobs on walls and wood projects among other no so fun things. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Did you airbrush him or use a paint brush? His colors are gorgeous so far! And the paint looks very evenly applied and very smooth! 😀 Also, did you use a paint that was already pearly and shiny or did you use like a pearl ex powder after?

Sorry for the late response here windstonefan! My bad, anywho. I know what you mean about the rod idea. Honestly, I don’t think it would work though. Once you start to drill into the gypsum the integrity of it will be compromised and I would imagine it just shattering from either the pressure of the drilling or just because it’s so fragile in that situation. For breaks with “chunks” I typically just glue the bits I can salvage together and fill the rest in with apoxie sculpt.

It’s really amazing stuff! They even sell it on amazon. It’s very different from using gypsum or plaster. It’s a two part putty you kneed together like dough. Once mixed it starts to harden. Once it’s hard it’s tougher then the gypsum! Amazing to work with for repair jobs! I highly recommend giving thata try ^_^

              Hope that helps!

Nope! Comes right out of the can like this! It’s a spray type of car paint. Expensive as hell but works amazing!!!

But that’s the way really good repairs are supposed to look, yes? To be able to display a piece and no one is the wiser that it was once utterly broken. I dont remember who on here did the male dragon complete facial reconstruction, but this emp tail is along the lines of that.

I was the one who did the complete facial reconstruction on a White Male dragon, several years ago, surprised anyone remembered. 🙂 I still have the pics, somewhere. I also think the archives have it, have to do a search to find it though.

Okay, the forum ate it, I also posted on this that Drag0nfeathers so cheated on this one! LOL! Ya gotta teach me how to make molds, that would have saved me so much on the Emperor I just finished. Great job though, you still cheated though! 😀 Oh & btw, I wanna see the new paint job you did!

I wouldn’t really call it cheating, for the amount of missing sculpture you would have to be Melody herself to have gotten it fixed perfectly. There are HUNDREDS of little scales on that big tail! Getting the plaster to actually STICK and sculpting the attaching areas was difficult as well. Definatly easier then doing the whole thing over though and to make it look 100% accurate a mold was the best idea I could come up with.

I wouldn’t call it cheating either, I think what you did was so clever and BRAVE! I would never cover a beautiful original with latex, but then I think I can be overly cautious with things like that. I would never have thought to take a mould of another sculpt either, haha. Genius.

Oh! I can’t tell you how afraid I was of putting that stuff on my good Emperor!!! It smelled terrible of amonia and I really thought it would damage the paint on it, but I read the label over and over and it said I shouldn’t have any problems and I didn’t really. ^_^ I had some trial and error getting the plaster the right consistancy when making the tail more so then anything. It was either falling apart or sticking to the mold or just crumbling completely while demolding. I was afraid if it dried completely before taking the mold off, it would get stuck and I wouldn’t be able to get it off at all, or I would either ruin the mold or the tail riping it apart so I had to do it while it was still kind of wet. Took a few tries, not gonna lie. My trash bag was VERY heavy that week, LOL!

I was teasing, even I wouldn’t have been willing to try to re-sculpt that much of him. I was intimidated enough just rebuilding a 4 inch section of tail, I could not imagine doing as much as was missing on yours.

I know how I would have done it though, but it would have taken a very long time to rebuild it, not to mention a lot of ApoxieSculpt! The tail section I did on PixieDust’s took me several weeks, & that was after I built the base shape of the tail to build all the scales onto.

Yea, I wanted to use apoxie sculpt, but the area was so large, I was afraid of it not working and me wasting the apoxie sculpt. >_< The plaster worked really well, but I would not sell him for the simple fact I'd be terrified of it rebreaking. Plaster is no substitution for apoxie sculpt, that's for sure.

That’s true, that stuff is tough! My 5 yo likes to take the leftover & make little animals, I have several interesting “snakes”. LOL!

You could do it with AS, but I think your solution was the best one for this case, & it came out beautiful. Ya gotta teach me how to make molds, that whole thing was slick, & lord knows that will not be the last Emperor tail broken.
