holly giblets lady that amazing lol yes i have been watching scrubsMarch 6, 2011 at 10:00 pm #839665Wampus Dragon wrote:Is the plaster any sturdier than the gypsum from which it was originally cast? Less or more?
I’m not really sure… they seem to be really similar, but I would say the gypsum is probably better. As far as rebreaking, I would just be afraid for it to break where the plaster “meets” the gypsum. Since they are two different materials and not glued, just sort of “set to dry” while attached I’m LOADING it with paint and I’ll probably put a rubber bottom on it or something for extra protection when it’s done.

It just sort of “snapped” on because I made the mold a lot bigger then the repair area. It fit like a glove and was actually really HARD to take off even when I was just testing the fit.

Did you make a mold of the broken edges of the repair piece and somehow incorporate that into the mold of your “whole” piece you took a mold of?
How did you get the “male” and “female” edges to fit together?March 6, 2011 at 11:23 pm #839668drag0nfeathers wrote:I’m not really sure… they seem to be really similar, but I would say the gypsum is probably better. I see. I’m just trying to see how much harder or easier it is than repairing resin dolls(which i used to do). I’ve never had anything damaged to this extent, but its good information to have. The plaster adheres to the gypsum while it’s drying then, and you paint in layers over top to hide the place where one material becomes the other. I can see what you mean about putting a rubber bottom on it too.

Well, in greater detail, along the areas where the new plaster tail met the gypsum, I DID LATER then add on apoxie sculpt to hide and “joining” areas that didn’t line up perfectly. Honestly, the only way you can tell it was broken is by flipping it over and seeing where the felt pad abruptly stops and the plaster begins. 8)

But that’s the way really good repairs are supposed to look, yes? To be able to display a piece and no one is the wiser that it was once utterly broken. I dont remember who on here did the male dragon complete facial reconstruction, but this emp tail is along the lines of that.
Waiting curiously to see his repaint. I actually like repaints, even though they seem to be frowned upon. It puts new life especially in ones that have been damaged like this.

How did you get the “male” and “female” edges to fit together?I didn’t… I guess that’s what a real professional would have done, but I didn’t want to risk breaking the dragon further. I don’t have the proper tools to bore out a docking hole or whatever it’s called, although that would be a better way to do it. I know what you’re talking about though.
I just made the mold bigger then the repair area like I said. So when I found the right area on the broken dragon, the mold practically fit like a glove sucking up against the areas that weren’t actually broken, leaving the empty gap for the plaster to go into like a cup. Then I just flipped the big guy over and poured in the plaster. Nothing to it really. It just stuck to the gypsum probably because on the water from the plaster started to be absorbed by the raw gypsum. That and all the extra bits of felt pad dangling off of him, I stuffed in the plaster too. I would imagine a good knock and it might snap off, but I already had two close calls when I was painting him and so far so good!
Does that better explain it?

What you did makes perfect sense. I forgot you made a mold that was put on the broken dragon. Not a plaster piece that was glued to the dragon. Duh.
Great job again!March 6, 2011 at 11:44 pm #839673Wampus Dragon wrote:drag0nfeathers wrote:Honestly, the only way you can tell it was broken is by flipping it over and seeing where the felt pad abruptly stops and the plaster begins. 8)

If it’s something salvageable I usually avoid repaints, but I’m VERY ANAL and if I can’t get the paint to look like that factory, or at least not like an obvious repair then I’ll repaint it instead. I have a few I have done for myself actually, but there is NO WAY I could have gotten that whole tail to look like it was done at the factory. I would have been annoyed every time I looked at him if I could notice the obvious difference in the paint skill. Why repair him in the first place if it’s going to be completely obvious you know, at least as a repaint I sort of have my own one of a kind Windstone, even if it’s unofficial. 😀
It’s weird, fur is easy to repair. (well, at least easiER) Scales really suck and suck worse to try and paint match!

I would think that the old peacock color would be one of the harder ones to recreate anyway. Then again, I’m a huge fan of purple, so maybe I just want to see a big royal purple emp like he seems to be in the newer photos.
March 7, 2011 at 12:13 am #839675Peacock is actually not the hardest but not the easiest either… new peacock is easier then old peacock I think. Emerald isn’t too bad either. The absolute easiest for me anyway believe it or not is Red Fire, and the old Brown. Problem colors are the white/pearls BIGTIME! Green is hit or miss, depends on the repair. Sometimes it’s been easy, other times hard. Same goes for Ruby. White is most def the worst. The color is very unforgiving with repairs and you can see right through it! I haven’t tackled Black and gold or Gold or EmPea yet for any repairs. Guess people haven’t broken as many of the newer colors quite yet. 😀
I suppose I could get paints from Windstone, but the colors are really sort of inconsistent when you look at a lot of the same color in a row so that doesn’t always work as good as you might think. Anyone who own more then 2 or 3 Ruby or Peacock pieces will know what I mean. The colors vary A LOT! I prefer to mix my own so I can get a nearly flawless match.

I agree, I own 3 ruby and 3 peacock statues and they all have variances in color. Which is one of my apeals to them.
Drag0nfeathers, You did an amazing job! Knock on wood that I never have to send you a repair but, I know who to talk with if an accident happens. Please post pics of him when your finished. I can’t wait to see him. -
