Miss Kitty Fantastic (oops sorry, Buffy flashback)

Sir Tips A lotJanuary 18, 2008 at 6:55 am #656849I suspect with the owners it’s more “can’t afford to” really. Though that’s also a matter of priorities. *shrugs* But this isn’t a really well-off area, so they may just not be able to at all.
January 18, 2008 at 10:45 am #656850I’m so happy you are keeping the kitty! I think he will have a much better life with you, than with the previous owners.
I like “Port”. hehe! Picasso is more dignified, though. 😀

Though I’m a little bemused at how this played out. We got a phone call from a guy who said he was a friend of the cat’s owner. Said owner can’t call directly because he doesn’t have long distance on his phone, but he lives in the same apartment complex as we do. (???? I guess he must have a cell phone from somewhere else or something, because otherwise that makes no sense. Or maybe he just didn’t want to call me directly. Dunno.)
Anyhow, I wasn’t going to just talk to this random guy, I needed to speak to the owner, so I got the number and called. Got a woman answering the phone, who said that the cat was theirs, yes (and identified it correctly) and that they’d found it as a stray a few weeks ago. I asked if they wanted it back, and they did. Then I asked if they were going to get the head tilt taken care of, because as I said, there’s no way I’m going to give this cat back to have it neglected. She said they’d taken it to the vet, and the vet said it was neurological and there was nothing they could do about it. Well! I explained about the polyp, and that it needed surgery, and would they agree to get the surgery done? She said that they couldn’t possibly pay for surgery on a pet. To which I responded that I could handily pay, but wasn’t going to pay for their cat, if I was going to pay for the surgery, I was going to keep the cat, and that they’d be welcome to visit it, or they could just get a new cat. (Maybe that was a little harsh of me, but I’m going to be out at least $400 for this critter, and to me that’s a LOT of money. I’m not doing that for a random stranger’s cat!) Anyhow, she said that I could keep it, and they didn’t want to visit it, they’re moving soon anyhow. So… that’s that, I guess. I’ve got a new cat now!I am glad you are keeping it. People who cant afford minor surgery and regular shots (Not to mention flea control) should not have animals in the first place.

Picasso (Think Guernica)
Arnold Sideways or Sidney Lopsides (characters from the Discworld novels)
And Eilene (yes, it’s a pun) if he were female, but he’s not.How about Bale? For Christian Bale off the movie “Equilibrium”. (Adding on to Kyrins idea)

I laughed out loud at this!
January 18, 2008 at 4:13 pm #656854I like the name Port. He is so lucky to have found you! people have a responsibility to take proper care of their pets. If they fall on hard times and can no longer care for them, it’s always best to talk to your local shelter or adoption agency. That way they’re still being responsible, not abandoning the animal. 🙂

January 19, 2008 at 4:56 am #656856Congrats! I know it is a lot of money, but they give so much love in return!!!! Hope everything goes okay! Keep us updated!
January 19, 2008 at 6:18 am #656857I shall keep you all informed.
Today he moved up into my room. We discovered that we need to keep him quarantined until he’s finished the whole course of antibiotics, which is 10 days, and that’s just too long to keep him shut up in a tiny little bathroom, so now he’s shut into my studio instead. Trying to work with a kitten is a bit of a pain, but ah well! He is very cute.
We haven’t picked a name yet for him, still thinking and getting to know him. He’s very affectionate, and loves to climb, and falls off things a lot.
January 19, 2008 at 6:32 am #656858Here’s more photos, because you can’t have too many kitten photos!
January 19, 2008 at 7:02 am #656859oh he looks so soft and cuddley!
January 19, 2008 at 9:52 am #656860What a pretty color!! At first I thought your first pictures were way off cuz the color was so different… and his head tilt was gone… but I am assuming this is your other kitty? Beautiful coat.
January 19, 2008 at 10:09 am #656861All the photos here are of the same kitty. The other ones were just taken in different lighting.
He is a classic red tabby. If he were a little older, shot in proper studio lighting, and if he’d just hold still for his photos, he’d look like this: http://www.smokeycoons.com/images/Img_0818-reduced.jpg
As for the tilt, it’s not in his bones or nerves, he can straighten his head out, he just doesn’t do it much. As the vet explained it, the way the polyp is pressing on his ear on the inside makes it feel as though he’s holding his head sideways when he’s holding it straight, and so when he tilts it to the other side, it feels as though it’s straight. (Try walking with your head held sideways, it’s very disorienting!) He straightens out to eat, or to pounce on things, but he doesn’t like to keep it straight. I imagine it makes him dizzy to do so, since it feels to him like he’s got his head twisted sideways when it’s straightened.
