So here’s the problem with paypal fees. If you live in another country like I do in Canada, paypal charges more in fees for payments and also charge fees to convert US dollars to Can.
Kim, that’s interesting and good to know!
I’ve bought a couple of times from a seller in Canada and they didn’t mention it; now I hope they didn’t get hit unexpectedly with higher fees than either of us anticipated.
Definitely something to keep in mind when buying or selling with different currencies.
Interested in buying or trading for: GB Pebble Sitting Red Fox in dark grey, Lap Dragon Test Paints (Water Sprite, Glacial Pearl, Opulence, Pastel Rainbow, and many others - see my Classifieds ad), Blue Morpho OW, GB Pebble Loaf dragons in blue/aqua/teal, and Griffin Test Paints (Black Rainbow or Frosted Jade).

I believe that it is possible to send Paypal payments in whatever currency you choose. Certainly I have done that in the past, though you may have to look for the option. If your seller wants Canadian dollars then she or he should ask you to send the payment that way rather than in US dollars.

Last time I bought international, you could change currencies by clicking a down-arrow next to the currency symbol.
Paypal used to only charge exchange fees, and didn’t charge extra for international if there was no currency exchange. They started charging a higher rate for international regardless of currencies a few years ago. Different countries can have different rates. When I last needed the info, it was easy to find in their help. These are normal expenses for selling internationally, and for shopping internationally.FWIW: The last time I did international currency, the exchange fee was included in the exchange rate for Canada, but it was listed separately for Australia. I contacted Paypal about why the fee for Australia, but not Canada, and the rep said that the fee for Canada was called out separately on her view of the transaction.

Speaking of international shopping, if you travel out of the country, check with your credit card, and look into what is typically available in the other country. Your credit card will charge you a percentage on other currency transactions, but they get a much better exchange rate than an individual can. Depending on the percentage they charge, you may be ahead paying that instead of the exchange fee to get cash. My credit card charged me 2%, and my brother’s charged him 2.5%. (So we charged everything on my card when we were together.) In America, I prefer to pay cash in person and not use my credit card. In Hong Kong, I found I got a better deal if I paid credit for everything. In Japan, many places don’t take foreign credit cards (or any credit cards), so I had to get cash for everything but hotels and other places aimed at foreigners. Note that you must have a chip card almost everywhere outside the US – magnetic stripe scanners are not supported in very many other countries anymore.
My keyboard is broken. I keep pressing "Escape", but I'm still here.
