Well, I was messing around with some scratchboard I bought last month… I haven’t used the stuff since I became proficient with color pencils and haven’t been using the color pencils since I’ve become addicted to the PYOs. Hubby says he wants me to start smoking again as that habit was way cheaper! Anyway, here is a tiger…

😆 That was the picture on the package of scratchboard! I figured it’s been at least 8 years since I’ve worked with the stuff… better start off easy.
When I was using it a lot, I would get very intricate. Most people do a negative style, but I like doing the positive. I did a coat of arms with the ivy and helmets all in positive. That took about a month!

No. Sadly I gave it to an ex-boyfriend a long long time ago. I’ve been thinking of doing another, but see, I’ve just bought all this paint!
I actually don’t have any of my artwork. I seem to find the perfect home for them when I get them done.
I just finished a trio of harpy eagles in color pencil that I gave to my dad for his birthday. He raised raptors in his youth until he got caught stealing hawk eggs from a nest.
He had a friend who had a harpy for a pet for a short time. As I recall, he called it a nightmare with feathers. It seems it had a thing for ears. It found a home in a zoo somewhere.
Anyway, he always wanted a harpy so I drew some instead.
I’ll get a picture of them when we go up the next time.

I love looking at the pics he had with his birds. He had a couple red tailed hawks, a great horned owl and a couple merlins.
The game warden caught him climbing down from a tree with an egg and was escorted home. When the warden saw the aviary I guess the warden was pretty upset. Told my grandpa if the birds weren’t gone in seven days, there would be a 500.00 fine for each one. Pops made him let them go on the spot. I guess the birds still hung around even though they weren’t captaive.

Now my uncle had a thing for snakes. He just about gave Nana a heart attack when she opened his sock drawer and heard rattling!

Raptors, snakes… He really likes the coolest animals! I’d like to have a zoo like that some day! 😀

I’m not sure about having a zoo… Animals take a lot of work and expertise. I have a hard time keeping up with three ponies! Of course, I have a 7 and a 8 year old, a full time job, and a husband to keep happy!
My daughter by the way, loves reptiles of all sorts. When she was little(r), I kept asking her if she wanted a pony. She kept telling me she wanted a turtle 😥 I kept telling her all the fun things you can do with ponies, but she’s just not into it. That’s okay. I like reptiles too. Maybe when I have a grandaughter…

One of my best friends is like that! Her parents keep five horses, a donkey, and a mule in the backyard, and she just doesn’t care about it, no matter how hard they try to get her into riding. Her dad even bought her a beautiful (I mean BEAUTIFUL) palimino quarter horse, he’s got a great personality, and she just doesn’t have any interest in riding… so her dad rides him for her. I guess some people just don’t have the right mentality for it or something.

Hehe, anyhow, I like the tiger. Scratchboard is something I’ve always been too intimidated by to attempt.

Don’t be intimidated! It’s really not that hard. Especially if you do a negative image. The easiest way to practice is to find a black and white photo/drawing. Put the drawing on top of the scratchboard and trace the drawing. When you remove the drawing you can see the outline on the scratchboard.
Use a suitable scratching tool and start lightly scratching. I use one of those small xacto pens. They do make special scratching tools, but I like the gripiness of the pen and the sharp point of the xacto.
The hardest part is going slow. It’s not a fast medium like painting or even drawing. I like it cause it makes me focus so much on it. I can forget everything else!
