Stay strong, ddvm! A cross-country drive seems like a completely wonderful idea. I so, so so so hope you are able to do it!
November 15, 2008 at 1:41 am #736730Oh man! I’m so sorry to hear this. 😥 Why is it that crappy stuff has to happen to the nicest people!
I agree. This is the time to do what matters to you. When I was seriously sick for a year in high school with a crashed immune system and no real diagnosis at the time I signed up, I said to heck with everyone and went on a trip to Minnesota (thankfully the doctors didn’t argue with me too much… the parents took a little convincing, but…). Worth the trip, even if it was short and associated with a club I belonged to. It meant a lot just getting away and not worrying about being sick! Not life-threatening (though I certainly felt like ‘just shoot me now’ for a good 5 months), I learned a lot by just going and doing, and it proved the point of doing what matters to YOU. If you have places you’ve always wanted to go see or people you always wanted to meet, DO it. Hope for the best, but live whatever time you are graced with to its fullest and don’t give it a second thought, whether that is a few months or a decade or more (hoping for the later!).
Btw, how far are you from Manhattan? I’ll be down in the city on vacation in January in time for Lunar New Year in Chinatown visiting a couple of friends (I want to see the Lion, Dragon, and Unicorn dance troupes and visit the markets during the holiday!). It would be great if we could meet up or you could join us! 🙂
November 15, 2008 at 3:02 am #736731I’m so sorry ddvm. 🙁 Do everything to live life to the fullest while you can. If you want to meet Wyland, then do it. I still hope you can beat this thing somehow…..
November 15, 2008 at 3:27 am #736732Oh man, I just read this entire thread for the first time. I’m so sorry for everything you have gone through and are going through. I’m glad you are feeling better and I agree with everyone. Take some time to do the things you’ve been putting off till “someday” If you do come to Cal. I’d love to meet you. I will keep you in my prayers everyday. I do believe in miracles!
November 15, 2008 at 3:39 am #736733Oh hun I’m so sorry, I don’t even know you but I’m sitting here in tears admiring your strength. You go out there and ENJOY each moment, leave nothing you want to try undone, and be proud of yourself for having the courage to do it. I’ll keep you in my prayers *hugs tight*
November 15, 2008 at 8:58 am #736734Aww ddvm, I’m so very sorry to read all of this that has happened. 😥 I’m getting to this thread late obviously. I haven’t been on the forum much lately.
I am so incredibly sorry though. It’s your decision on what to do next. What you WANT to do. Spend as much time as you can with ones you love. Do everything it is that you ever wanted to do in your life. I’ve got you in my thoughts and prayers. Just stay strong dear!November 15, 2008 at 2:16 pm #736735travistie wrote:Aww ddvm, I’m so very sorry to read all of this that has happened. 😥 I’m getting to this thread late obviously. btw my Dad was a Vet for 37 years 😉November 15, 2008 at 2:46 pm #736736Go for it! Do things YOU want to do and stay positive.
We had this speaker at my work meetings who told us about the philosophy of find the golden ring in the rubble. You sure have a rubble, but you already found a ring in there!
Sending big hugs!

Cancer has touched my life several times, and the docs always give you the worst possible. A very good family friend was told 6 months, that his cancer was too agressive, to get his affairs in order…that was two years ago, and he’s in remission. Just keep fighting and do what makes you happy! I’m thinking and hoping for you!

I cant echo these sentiments strongly enough. Do NOT accept time limits with regard to cancer(s)… I speak from experience.
And even though it’s been said over and over here, Im saying it also… DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO! Dont take this out of context, but you know the expression, ‘live each day like it’s your last?’ Cliché yes, but if ppl did do that, even just for a little while, theyd fulfill more of their dreams. Sometimes when that over whelming knowledge of your own mortality comes into focus, life changes immensely (for the good) for a time or forever.
If you have time, find a support group if they dont already have counseling for you. I know we learn that with Cancer specifically, meditation and state of mind is extremely important and can actually help you battle it off or to such life extensions with quality.
Having said this, you remain in my thoughts, prayers, and heart. Candle easily stays lit for you sweetie. Hang in there and keep ‘fresh eyes’ each day.
Many hugs and much love <3 xoxo
November 15, 2008 at 8:41 pm #736739Ya know, I always picture all female veterinarians to be like my mom….Tough as nails, compassionate, tenacious, practical and ornery enough to out last anyone! I swear that woman will survive me! So in short, that’s the image that you have in my eyes and goodness knows if you’re anything like my mom (and I think you are) you’ll be with us for a rather long time!
I cannot express enough how much we love you and are here for you! Please know that any time you need a hug, a thought, a prayer, a warm fuzzy, that I and everyone else here hears you and we send it your way! Even if you don’t think you need it you’re gonna get it!
Much love, support, and positive thinking!
November 16, 2008 at 4:23 am #736740Jeez, ddvm, they don’t paint a picture in very many colors, do they? Well, I’m with the rest of the gang: do everything you’ve ever wanted to do, have an absolute blast, and never mind what they say about time limits. I’ve known people who have seen cancer in both their relatives and their pets, and so many of them say things like, “Bowser was happier than Uncle George because he didn’t know there was a time limit.” So long as what you’re feeling is tolerable to you, then you’re the one on top. Take that advantage just as far as you possibly can. 🙂
Live it like a cat. Travel where you please, sleep where you please, say what you please. Why not? I think it’s safe to say you’ve earned it anyway; this illness just gives you the social free rein to do so, in this culture where we feel guilty for just going off call for a night. :/
I’m really sorry to hear about Zack. Why is it always the great dogs that get the major stuff? 🙁
November 16, 2008 at 5:41 pm #736741I FINALLY got to read everything!!
Come out this waya dn let us all know when and where so at least all the CA folks can meet you. You might even be able to get to the new Factory and say hi to everyone there too if you can squeeze it into your schedule
I wonder how it got to stage 4 so quickly???November 16, 2008 at 7:18 pm #736742Dragon Master wrote:I FINALLY got to read everything!!

I wonder how it got to stage 4 so quickly???In the earlier stages it can sometimes be harder to detect… my grandfather (who was a lifelong smoker but quit a couple of years before his diagnosis) didn’t know he had cancer until it was Stage IV. I’m trying not to mention him though since we want ddvm to stay positive and my grandfather’s experience was…. not.
November 16, 2008 at 7:31 pm #736743Wow. DDVM, I certainly hope you take the opportunity to go to CA just because you want to. Don’t worry so much about getting things together. You may or may not have the chance to do it again. I certainly hope you do. I am glad you’re feeling better. As for your nausea…cancer drugs are quite noxious. But you probably already know that. Don’t give up, as others have said. Positive outlook affects not only quality of life, but quantity of life. Those with a positive outlook have a better chance of surviving longer than expected. They certainly live better than those that have a negative outlook.
