See you in a few days. I hope things go smoothly for you. I’ll be thinking about you and sending healing thoughts your way.

And I’ll probably start chemo in a couple of weeks depending on my response. They can’t start it now since I’m going into the hospital for a chest tube this morning – I’ll be in for 2 to 3 days. And I need to heal before starting immunosuppressant drugs. Plus I have to go for an MRI Tuesday to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread to my brain – the PET scan showed that it has got to some ribs.
I asked about practicing while on chemo and he expressed “serious concerns.” I think it will depend on how I feel, myself – I would take precautions. But since he said I have a few months (if I don’t respond at all to the drugs which isn’t likely) to a few years to live I should do what makes that time worthwhile. And there is hope – two of the best drugs available now didn’t exist 2 or 3 years ago so who knows what might happen? So I’m not planning on selling my Windstone collection just yet. 😉 😀
Anyway, my ride to the hospital is here. See you all in a few days!
WE LOVE YOU DDVM!!! Don’t you DARE kick the bucket on us, cus I know I for one will come out there and kick you back into life myself! Wishing you all the best and a pox on those cancer cells! Seriously, if you need anything, give me a call, or shoot me an e-mail, I’ll pm you my info, we can even swap stories about the weird things dogs ingest =P (well they’re my mom’s but hey, I’ve heard them all!) LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF LOVE AND WARM FUZZIES!!!!
November 6, 2008 at 10:07 pm #736701Yeah…I second that not kicking the bucket thing…don’t you dare! I am not a religious person and I rarely if ever pray, but I’m praying hard for you right now.
Get better, and that is an order!

Agreed! I absolutely HATE that there is the guise of all these “good” programs that should be in place to help, but they make it almost impossible to get real help from them. Or, like some insurance plans, wont offer the help when you NEED it…but rather when they WANT you to get it.
DDVM, I’m so sorry to hear all this news. 🙁 But you WILL get better! And if the doctors in NY can’t help you, come down to Houston, to M.D. Anderson. It’s the best cancer hospital in the WORLD. My grandmother had breast cancer, and she went in for treatments at MD Anderson, and she beat it! It took maybe 2 or 3 years (I was young, my parents didn’t tell me or my cousins anything, so the memory is fuzzy) but she’s fine and kickin now! You must keep all your Windstones, so you can start a museum for us 😉
November 7, 2008 at 1:20 am #736704You can beat this. I know you can. (more prayers)

There’s also the Huntsman Cancer Center in Utah which is very good. They support the ‘whole’ person not just the medical aspect of it. Hang in there; we love you!

November 8, 2008 at 2:44 am #736706Coming in late on this DDVM, but I just wanted to tell you good luck and im rooting for you. 🙁 It really sucks that you got lung cancer and didnt even do anything to court it… like smoking. What crap.
November 8, 2008 at 3:40 am #736707hope your stay at the hospital isnt too bad. Just a little thing to make the time go by you can ask for a morning paper .. even the ones from over seas . They will keep you entertained for a bit . get some rest and watch out for that hospital food , i think its the most dangerous thing there 😆
November 11, 2008 at 1:11 am #736708Thanks for all the well wishes, guys! I got out of the hospital yesterday (Sunday) which was a day later than expected. Just a word of wisdom – when the surgeon comes to pull a chest tube DO NOT vomit profusely in front of him. 😉 He left for an hour and then came back – I was still nauseous, dehydrated and running a fever so they wouldn’t let me leave until Sun afternoon. Most of the nurses was great but there was at least one tech I would cheerfully have killed – she came in at 2 and 4 AM and HIT me awake to take my vitals then stalked out like I was imposing on her. But everyone else was really great. And one of my clients stopped by and picked up all my path slides for me – she works in the lab.
So tomorrow I go for a MRI on my brain to see if the cancer has spread to my brain. 😯 I’m hoping not! And then Wed I leave for an appt at Dana-Farber in Boston on Thurs – my sister who lives in Boston has connections. But I have heard of M.D. in Houston – I figure I’ll try to stay (semi) local for now.
But I really do appreciate all the encouraging words and good wishes – never doubt that they do make a difference! 😀
November 11, 2008 at 1:15 am #736709I sure hope it’s a little easier to breathe, now… Sounds like you’re in pretty good spirits and that always helps! *keeping fingers crossed that nothing has spread!*

I’d say since her user name contain’s ‘DVM’ and she mentioned doing rads on a cat, my guess is she’s a veterinarian. 😉
Best wishes, ddvm, hang in there, and get well as soon as you can.

Got it in one!
November 11, 2008 at 2:27 am #736713I’m coming into this thread late too, and feeling badly about that considering what you’ve been going through these past few weeks! Ddvm, hang in there and keep fighting this thing! It makes me crazy to think that cancer can still happen even when a person takes good care of herself: what are we, Boxers? :/ And I’m with you on the sluggish pace of diagnostics and treatment in human medicine as opposed to veterinary. Like Necron says, find out if you’ve got a social worker assigned and get them to help you wade through all of this. Your energy needs to go towards beating this thing, not struggling with miles of red tape. Best of luck!
And maybe karma will be kind, and let you barf all over that idiotic tech sometime. Who knows, maybe somebody has already done it for you. 😈
