I haven’t been on as much lately because I’ve been having some medical issues. In mid-August I was diagnosed with pneumonia – was really exhausted all the time but still worked. I did try to take it easier which translates into working 10-12 hour days instead of 12-14. Not surprisingly I didn’t get better. So I did take a couple of days off. Follow up XRays weren’t any better so my doctor sent me to a pulmonologist. Long story but 8 weeks, 4 sets of XRays, 3 different antibiotics, 2 courses of steroids, 2 cat scans and 1 bronchoscope later the doctor is “seriously concerned” that I have lung cancer. 😥
The most recent cat scan indicates I now have free fluid in the chest (pleural effusion). So I’m going into the hospital Monday for them to tap the fluid and send it for analysis (plus a follow up doppler – I have a blood clot in my right leg). So Wednesday afternoon I’ll know if they found cancer in the fluid – if not then I will have to go for surgery and have a biopsy of my lung (and be out of work for 10 days.) Sort of a loose/loose situation. Except I really don’t want to have surgery.
So I’m a tad stressed. And feeling really lousy. I have a cough they can’t control and I constantly have a tight, constricted feeling in my chest. Necron, I really don’t know how you have handled everything you have – just two months of this and I’m exhausted. And I hope I never need another bronchoscope – I can’t believe you have to have one every 3 months. You have my utmost admiration.
I hadn’t been posting about this because I hoped it would get better. And there is still hope – the doctor isn’t 100% sure it is cancer – evidently I’m not following the normal course of anything. And since I work with animals there is always the chance I picked some weird thing up. So keep your fingers crossed!
October 18, 2008 at 3:23 pm #736641OMG, ddvm! I seriously hope it’s not cancer and that it clears up for you soon. It sounds like you’re miserable. Just make sure you rest and try not to think about it — I know, that’s a big order. But stressing out about it won’t make it any better.
October 18, 2008 at 3:28 pm #736642Ack! I hope it’s *only* a pleural infection, and not cancer…
Hugs!

~hugs~October 18, 2008 at 3:57 pm #736644😯 Oh wow, I’m so sorry to hear that, DDVM! I hope it’s not cancer – please keep us posted!
October 18, 2008 at 5:23 pm #736645I’ve only ever had tubes into my lungs once. The surgeon didn’t tell me they were going to do this while I was under the anasthetic, though, so when I began to regain consciousness I thought I was choking to death. They, the doctors, didn’t think to say anything to me; they just watched me thrashing around on the table and later told me they assumed it was DTs. Fortunately my wife was in the room. She figured out the problem and came over to tell me it was OK because the machines were breathing for me; I wasn’t actually dying.
I wouldn’t wish tubes into your lungs on anyone. I sure hope they figure out you have something curable, ddvm.

October 18, 2008 at 7:19 pm #736650I hope they find it’s not cancer but something ‘simple’ and that you recover quickly. 🙂
October 18, 2008 at 7:45 pm #736651Thanks, everyone. I appreciate all the good thoughts! I’ll keep you posted.
October 18, 2008 at 7:58 pm #736652What! God, I hope it isn’t cancer. I sure hope the tests give some answers and can get this fixed soon.
Meantime, rest and take it as easy as you can so your lungs can recover, I am so hoping your lack of progress is just because you haven’t been resting like you should.
Keep us posted. Lots of love and hugs sent your way.

October 18, 2008 at 8:30 pm #736653i hope every thing turns out well with the tap , i hope its just a nasty Plurual Pneumonia causing the fluid that they can resolve with a tube . the tube isnt all that bad if you need one its just a bit tricky moving and sore , i only took drugs for them twice and i had 6 of em … mine used to whistle 😛 . After a few Bronchs its not bad , if you need another one ask them to put some local novacane in your nostral and a twilight sleep , you wont feel a thing and wont be sore afterwards ..being wide awake durring one is not so pleasant even with novacane 😕
