Uh? She said they paid with Western Union.
April 6, 2007 at 8:35 pm #559273But, you can pay western union with a credit card. It is like paypal, western union charges your credit card and forwards the funds to the receiver.
April 6, 2007 at 8:57 pm #559274Well yes.
But it’s only a fraudulent charge if somebody else used your credit card to do it. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t count if you used the card yourself to buy a money order.
April 6, 2007 at 9:00 pm #559275But it would technically be a fradulent charge, wouldn’t it? You pay someone money to ship you a item. She isn’t going to receive the item because it was a scam. Wouldn’t that fall under the same catogory as buying something on ebay and the seller not sending it?
April 6, 2007 at 9:10 pm #559276She should at least try, if he used a credit card. Just a “Hey, we did this and we realized it was a scam, stop that payment/I want to dispute the charge.”

Western Union is in the “instant money transfer” category, so you wouldn’t be able to file a dispute with the CC company the way you’d be able to if a seller didn’t deliver what was promised.
Here’s what Ebay says about it:
Instant Money Transfers (such as Western Union & MoneyGram)
Not recommended
Never pay via Western Union or Moneygram–money transfer or cash. The use of Instant Money Transfers as a method of receiving payment is not allowed on eBay.co.uk. We have banned the use of Instant Money Transfers as a payment method on the eBay.co.uk site to protect members, because in the past some sellers have exploited Instant Money Transfers in order to defraud buyers.
If you notice a listing offering International Money Transfers as a payment option, you should report it to us so that we can maximise site safety. To do this, click on the “Contact Us” link on the left-hand side of any Help page. Please make sure you always include the Item Number in the email. You will find the item number in the top right-hand corner of the listing.
Risks:
• Vulnerable to criminal misuse (fraud)
• Difficult to identify and designate recipient
• Not traceable
• Does not offer verification and cancellation privileges
• Generally, no recourse is available if the item is not delivered as promised, even if you used your credit card to send the payment
• Not covered by eBay’s Standard Purchase Protection Programme.April 6, 2007 at 9:15 pm #559278You should still be able to dispute the charge with your credit card company. Call them and see what they say.
April 6, 2007 at 9:25 pm #559279I asked him. He used cash. 😥 😥

That sucks. I am sorry. Could there be a way you go to the local police and file a police report? I guess that would only work if you wanted to try find that person and sue them.
April 6, 2007 at 9:28 pm #559281I looked through the emails and the only clue we have to their location is somewhere in the UK. Of course that could just be a bunch of crap as well. 😥
April 6, 2007 at 9:31 pm #559282My husband just said he wired the money to London. 😥 We do have the pickup date of the money but I don’t see how that’s much help. 😥
April 6, 2007 at 9:38 pm #559283Hey, we could get griffiness to help you maybe. She lives in the UK so she might know something you can do.

Yeah, but you can put your credit card number in at Western Union, so if the Western Union web site was a fake, they might have the credit card number. I don’t know how it was done, but I figured I’d mention it just to be safe.
Oh, I just read the other posts since then and see that he paid cash, so never mind.
April 6, 2007 at 9:57 pm #559285Ah, I see.
I was talking about a real Western Union. Scams like this don’t usually try to net your credit card, they just want you to send cash or untraceable money. So I didn’t think of the Western Union itself being a fake.
