I’m Ruby and just found out that Alexandrite is a June birth stone and it changes colorsIt does! When it was discovered in Russia (I’m sure) by Alexander the Great (not too sure, it was an Czar named Alexander…) he thought the rock was green. Only in indoor, ‘false’ light or low light does it appear purple! It’s really cool!
And I don’t like Diamonds, whatever that movie tells me… hehe makes my fiancee’s job difficult when we get wedding rings (he’s telling me I’m getting a band, no stone,)
August 6, 2008 at 4:11 am #726887hmm.. the only diamond I like is very rare… and obscenely expensive, it’s actually a violet color…
there are blue diamonds as well that are rare and also obscenely expensive…
ruby is my birthstone.. but I’m not all that fond of red..
dark amethysts because I like purple… but other than that… eh… 🙄
August 6, 2008 at 4:37 am #726888My bf knows that I don’t want a diamond in my engagement ring, not that he’s complaining. I want a sapphire and they’re much less expensive…now if we could just get the money to get there… 🙄
August 6, 2008 at 4:48 am #726889I’m not a fan of diamonds myself. It kinda sucks because my birthstone is a diamond (April) and when I was younger any jewelery I go as gifts were of the fakey imatation diamond kind. I generally go for the semi-precious stones myself. The only diamonds I own are on my engagment ring and I don’t wear it because I afraid I’ll loss the stones 🙄 .

I don’t know what I want on the wedding one (since we didn’t get engagement rings, he wants to buy a more expensive ring for me, one that’s got a rock) but I told him diamonds are boring. He could get the ones that have the faults that make them shine rainbow’y in the light. Those are prettier then the flawless ones.
August 6, 2008 at 2:40 pm #726891You can use small diamonds as accents aroung another LARGER stone. I think you should ude the birth stone of the person you are getting married to in yours and vice versa. That way you ALWAYS have part of that person with you
August 6, 2008 at 3:01 pm #726892you know what’s really sad… is diamonds are very expensive when you but jewelry with them in it… but if one falls out… and you have to have it replaced… it costs quite a bit.. but it only costs the jeweler about $10…
I learned that from working with a jeweler… and at one time I had a whole bunch of loose 1/5th carat diamonds… LOL…
August 6, 2008 at 3:45 pm #726893I have my grandmother’s wedding set and I wear it all the time. Mostly to keep her close. I had to have the ring rebuilt and the prongs for the stones reset because it hadn’t been off her finger since they were married. They were married during WWII and were together for over 50 years before my grandfather died in 1999. Grandma died last May. I like the big diamond it makes rainbows and sparkles. I spend a lot of time studying it when I’m bored somewhere and I have to wait. 😆
Looking for Blue Fawn Baby Kirin

Sun Dragon Koi #3August 6, 2008 at 5:01 pm #726894My engagement ring features sapphires. They are hard enough to take a beating while still being way more interesting (to me) than a diamond. The green central sapphire actually has a tiny orange one growing in it (under jeweler’s loops).
That said, my favorite gemstones are Labradorite, Moonstone, nearly any opal with fire (really love black opals and jelly/crystal opals), any green stone such as peridot and green sapphire (don’t much care for emeralds unless they aren’t milky). Smokey quarts is also pretty to me, and sometimes flourite is very pretty.

My art: featherdust.comAugust 6, 2008 at 5:03 pm #726895I like sapphire… a couple of my watches have sapphire crystal to keep them from scratching… and it makes the colors of the face look different in different light…

Oh my! What a pretty engagement ring, Nam.
I love opal to, anything with ‘flash’ in it will catch my eye 😉 .August 6, 2008 at 7:27 pm #726897Jennifer wrote:My engagement ring features sapphires. I do like yours Jen, it’s beautiful. Sometimes I wish I had an engagement ring, then I think, I’d have to take it off all the time, since I’m going into something where I’d have to wear gloves I wouldn’t be able to wear it then, and… it would end up in a box, long story short. 😆
I’m not sure it’s worth it. You people that have one, what’s the significance in it for you?

I ask because I just recently was made aware that my favorite production color to date, Peacock, was actually based on the mineral peacock ore. I thought that was really neat 🙂 . I have several favorites myself, but my top three are Amber, Labradorite and Rainbow Moonstone.
I like them all…I don’t wear any as jewelery though. I like them as minerals. I think labradorite is my top favorite. Oh , and high quality black pinfire opals. They are a bit spendy though.
