I finally went to see Eragon last night. And, to put it very nicely, I didn’t like it. LotR run-off, the epitome of cliché-ed uninventiveness. I have not found a movie so thoroughly stupid since watching the ultra-stupid Predator.
The bad guys were run of the mill, Arya was a cardboard figure who could just as well have been left out, a third of the movie was time-wasting sappiness, forced sappiness, as if people died just to give Eragon a chance to bawl, Eragon is a self-important little twerp, and there were no new monsters. The dialog was on a second-grade level of playing with Lego or something. Saphira? She was just as bad. She has fuzz, fur and feathers, bird wings instead of leathery wings, and her headdress is the lamest possible. Admittedly there’s no rules for how dragons look, but what’s so hard about making her interesting, even if the book cover illustrator couldn’t? And if interestingness isn’t possible, they could at least have made her anatomically correct. Her wings didn’t even attach at the shoulder!
Not to mention the factual mistakes. I doubt physics would have agreed with the flying Saphira did in the gorge. You can’t make armor in a single sitting, even if you do work through the night. How did Brom get to the bad guy’s city if it were so far away and Saphira could barely arrived in time?
The positive points were few and far between, but there are some. The photography is great, and I loved the scene where baby Saphira murders the rat. The only characters I liked were Brom and his Friesian. That Friesian was beautiful. Of course the only decent character was the one they had to get rid of right away. Sheesh.
This movie is a grade B- and belongs in with those Hollywood romances. Perfectly useless and a waste of money.January 2, 2007 at 6:35 am #517786Greater Basilisk wrote:I finally went to see Eragon last night. And, to put it very nicely, I didn’t like it. The local paper gave it a bad review too, and I was wondering if it was accurate — from what you said, it looks like it was. That’s pretty disappointing though…I was hoping for some LOTR quality stuff.
January 2, 2007 at 6:41 am #517787You see that is what happens when books get made into movies, so much gets left out, and some big parts were left out of Eragon, the same with harry potter 4 I too wonder how they will handle HP5, but want to see it reguardless. As for Dumbledoor, I wonder if they have him more edgy in the movies on purpose, because I cant see JKR allowing them to do that with out her consent.
January 2, 2007 at 6:42 am #517788I took my friend David to see it….he really liked it….but he hasn’t read the book….
now he wants to borrow the book….
I on the other had….tolerated it…
it wasn’t horrible…but it was kind of blah….but I was glad he liked it at least….
January 2, 2007 at 6:56 am #517789Reading the book is only an improvement even though the book is no masterpiece either. They added the Balrog-type dragon into the movie when it wasn’t in the book and they left the diamond in the book out of the movie. They basically took the names from the book and crammed them into a rushed 90 minutes, turning a poor book into a poorer movie.
I don’t watch very many movies. Usually I only go if I know the director is good and has made other movies I like, has an actor whose other movies I like, or if I want to hear what the movie has to say. So watching one as lousy as Eragon which had none of the above irks me.January 2, 2007 at 7:05 am #517790I know what you mean. Especially since movies are so expensive nowadays…
January 2, 2007 at 7:06 am #517791Exactly. So if they were going to spend the money anyway, why didn’t they make a good work of it instead of a blah work?
January 2, 2007 at 7:12 am #517792I’ve wondered about that too. With the amount of money that an average movie costs to make, you would think that it shouldn’t be a problem to come up with something really good. But I guess movies are just like anything else, and the ability of the people involved varies a lot. If we had a few Peter Jackson clones, I bet we’d see a lot more good fantasy movies…
January 2, 2007 at 7:14 am #517793Yeah, but then they wouldn’t be so special anymore. I guess you need all the lousy ones so you can appreciate the great.

hmmm….Eragon doesn’t sound very promising. I’m going to see it tomorrow (Wednesday). Hope I don’t end up wasting my money. 🙁
January 2, 2007 at 1:06 pm #517795Well, if in the end you think you did, you can’t say you weren’t warned. 😉

So true…however, my little boy wants to see it, so I guess I’m stuck.
January 2, 2007 at 1:10 pm #517797Considering it’s made a from a kid’s book, I guess it’s not terrible as a kid movie. They weren’t making it for high expectations.

As Mimi said, we need more Peter Jacksons. Oh, well, I’m sure I’ll survive. I’ll report back to the class tomorrow. 😀
January 2, 2007 at 1:16 pm #517799It’ll be interesting to see your take. Most people thought it was just bleh, but I really disliked it.
