Yeah… which is precisely why I want to be on the book’s side, now. Or just remain neutral. It WAS honestly a decent book! Crappier things have been published, but you don’t hear people complaining so much about them, because there’s a smaller fanbase. Yeah. I forget what my point was.

Anyway, I was just looking at that anti-shurt’ugal (however you spell thaaat..) website, and according to them Paolini didn’t even finish Eragon when he was 15. He just started writing it then, and finished it 4 years later. Pfft. Ticks me off that people judge him by his AGE…

It’s true that there is a lot of stuff out there that is just as bad. I think what also plays a part is that, as the anti site mentioned, a lot of people resent the fact that he didn’t get published on merit but rather because his parents own a publishing company. I can certainly empathize with feeling irritated with someone getting something they didn’t really earn or work for.

      really…

There has not been a decent fantasy book in ages. Even Lackey…my bestest and most favorite author has been mearly “okay” lately. I am so desperate for fantasy of any kind that read the book. I was so desperate…I read the second one. And I am soo desperate…I will go see the movie.

I have read almost everything on the shelves of the fantasy bookshelves at B&N…its a very sad state.

So bad or good….I will go and see. And be glad to have SOME fantasy at all!

If you love dragons, try Dragon Champion by E. E. Knight – I just finished it last night and really enjoyed it. I plan on getting the next one in the series!

I’m so not going to be opinionated on this thread…too close to Christmas, and I’ve had about 6 hours of sleep in the last 4 days….Only words, I liked the book, not great but I enjoyed it, I will see the movie, I like dragons.

I wouldn’t so much judge an author by their age, but I would say it is a factor, not of good or bad writing, but simply of substance. Really he might be an amazing 15 years old writer, but he only has the life experience of a 15 year old.

You can’t communicate what you haven’t lived. And, no offence to all the young people on the forum, many of you may have gone through a lot of things by the time you got to 15, but there is still so much more to experience emotionally, intellectually, physically and nothing but time will give you that experience.

So what I’ll say is, I haven’t read this book, I will read it, and I’m sure I will enjoy it very much.

Ah… That is true. Very true. What I meant is that it’s not all THAT much harder for teenagers to write books than adults–I mean, other than experience-wise. But then in the fantasy genre I don’t think that matters as much as it does in other areas… although inexperience could be the reason Paolini’s writing is so cliche and full of Mary Sue-isms, certainly. Eh. It’s still not a bad book.

By the way, sorry if I offended anyone… I’m good at coming off as anal and over-opinionated when it comes to things like this. 😀 I’m only ranting cause it’s FUN.

Well, you certainly didn’t offend me! 😀 I’m all for a lively discussion and I absolutely don’t need everyone to agree with me! In fact, it’s an even better discussion when 2 people can coherently argue 2 completely different opinions! 😉

😆 Can you say ARGUMENTATIVE 😆

Anyway, have you read any of the Sword and Sorceress books edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley? She always has a little bio of the author before each short story and she has published A LOT OF very young authors!

Mmmph. We’ve been listening to the book (on tape) for a couple weeks before we go to bed. It was okay, but at this point not worth finishing. It’s tough listening to it with a writer, too! 😉 My fiance has nothing nice to say about it, but I just tell him that this kid is published and he’s not!

There was ONE original moment that I liked a lot in the book where they all get caught in a windstorm and Saphira almost gets blown away because her wings are acting like sails and she can’t pull them in…Eragon has to jump on her and push her wings folded. That seemed cool, and was something I hadn’t heard before.

Saphira as a character in the book seems like a real B***H! She just seems snippy and possesive and a little skitzo. I liked her a lot better in the movie. Plus she was voiced by a hottie actress that I like! ^_^

I was really looking forward to the movie, even though we didn’t really like the book…I’ve been starved for a good fantasy movie, especially one with DRAGONS! And I have to admit, Saphira was very beautiful and SUPER CUTE as a baby!! And I liked the “boss fight” at the end – that was pretty cool. The rest of the movie was big let down for me, though…

And yes, when it wasn’t bad LOTR, it was bad Star Wars.

(I think they stayed away from the elves and dwarves so that they weren’t TOO close to LOTR…that’s my theory anyway. Love-intrest did sort of smack of Arwen as it was.)

Oh oh oh! No, I haven’t. I will have to read them; but speaking of other published young authors, how many of them are out there? Paolini’s the only really famous one… but there *must* be other people who have published novels early on in their lives, no? I remember there was one kid who wrote a picture book about sea otters or something, she was like 12… that was all the rage for a while. Anyway. I’ll look out for Sword and Sorceress books. Maybe I’m weird, but I really enjoy reading author bios…

You know, you’d think he would have given Eragon and Arya different names. I mean… ARAGORN. ARWEN. They’re the same names AND the same sub-plot. But then again, it might just be a nod in Tolkien’s direction. “I really liked your story, so I’m going to write my take on it…”

How many of you like books on tape? I personally just cannot get into the story with a book on tape. First time I tried it I was really surprised to find out that the whole thing is read by a single person! I remember it was a detective story, and to have an older woman with a distinguished voice do a street punk’s lines, or even just regular male characters’ lines was just too weird for me. Completely ruined the fantasy.

Birth of the Firebringer (which is QUITE original, while still having a very classic fantasy plotline) was written when the author was young, though published later on. It’s one of my favorite books ever. Not very long, but very interesting. And the sequels are pretty good too.

Haha, that reminds me of when my Dad rented a Dune audiotape from the library. It’s one of my favourite books, so I had him put it in while he was driving me somewhere. My goodness, I doubt we were two minutes into it when I asked him to turn it off. Some guy doing a high-pitched voice of a Reverend Mother was more than I could handle. I just can’t get into them either.
