I’m not sure how to use the template for the reviews, but I just watched a great anime, so here goes my attempt at a quickie review.

Canaan, 4 Stars out of 5 (but I am picky and disagreed with something in the ending, so it’s probably 4.5 or 5 out of 5)

Canaan is apparently not that old of an anime, but it seemed like a classic to me. It’s only 13 episodes, has a pretty definite story set in a limited time/place and a solid ending, which is something I look for in the world of 300+ episodes and no end in sight animes.

It’s gory and wonderful but also funny and heart-rending. It takes place in a similar, contemporary vision of the world, but without ruining the story, there are different advances in biological warfare and genetic engineering. The characters moving the plot have “synesthesia”, and for those of you who didn’t pay attention to poetic terms in English class, it means blending the senses or apprehending stimuli through other means, such as tasting light seeing smells, hearing color, etc. Many people have been altered by a virus that creates changes in the human perception or abilites, but the virus mostly kills people in terrible, head-exploding graphic death. This is a pretty dark anime, but there are many enjoyable characters, and it’s hard to say “this is a bad guy and this is a good guy”. One of the “bad guys”, Alphard, was my favorite 🙂

Warnings: I’ve already said it’s graphic, and it’s a mature show, so language probably also follows the content though I can’t think of any specific instances of cursing. This is however, the first anime I’ve ever seen with necrophilia in it…it’s not a big part of the story or anything, it’s supposed to be a tragic sort of reunion but it is pretty clear and it’s in one episode. So yeah, you’ve been warned.
Also, Alphard’s little sister is as my big sister put it “two cups of crazy” and she does some pretty disturbing SM things and also just crazy a** violent stuff.

Time for another review…

Title: Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan
<img src="http://www.gamechy.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/NuraAnime.jpg"

Synopsis: (Taken from Wikipedia) Rikuo Nura is part human and a quarter yōkai (demon). Because he is only a quarter yōkai, Rikuo is able to turn into his yōkai form only after sunset, when the moon is out; he turns back into his human self when the sun rises. He lives in a house full of spirits along with his yōkai grandfather. Trying to escape his fate, he does good deeds in order to avoid becoming a yōkai, despite his grandfather’s wish that Rikuo succeed him as master of the Nura yōkai clan. Rikuo is a different yōkai because he helps humans. He eventually comes to terms with his demon blood and decides to take up the position of Young Head of the Nura house. Multiple factions aim to stop him or usurp his position, and he must gather friends and allies, a new Hyakki Yakō under his banner of “Fear”.

Review: I really enjoyed this one (yeah, I know, another review from me for a fantasy/supernatural genre anime… no surprise here…LOL). But I also want the manga for this one. The artwork looks really good. There are six story arcs, and this anime covers the first two. There is a second season now being aired in Japan, and you can catch both seasons on Hulu. I liked this one for 2 main reasons – the folklore and the fun characters.

I have a little knowledge of Japanese folklore, so it was really neat seeing the “monsters” personalized into characters. I’m familiar with yuki-onna, kappa, tengu, nurarihyon, tanuki, and sodehiki-kozō. I really wished I knew a little more, because I’m sure they are a ton of references throughout the series… I would really like to know the folklore behind Kubinashi’s character (the floating head guy… LOL). Also, the Hyakki Yako (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons) that is mentioned in the review is also a part of Japanese folklore. I just enjoyed how it all meshed together.

There are a bunch of fun and likeable characters, both human and demon, and it made for some nice humorous moments. For example, his school friends start a supernatural investigation club (of course they make Rikou join), and they decided to hold their first meeting at Rikou’s house (against his wishes) because the local rumor is his house is haunted (understatement). Rikou tells the entire clan that his human friends must not see them and that they are to remain hidden at all costs. It just seemed funny to see a mish-mash of about a dozen demons hiding behind a statue, sweating bullets, trying not to be discovered… especially when one of his friends is an onmyouji (demon exorcist).

Also, Rikou’s friend, Kiyotsugu, who started the club, is obsessed with demons and is DETERMINED to see one; it’s why he started the club in the first place. He’ll be off somewhere, desperately trying to find anything supernatural… while the rest of the group is being attacked by demons elsewhere. Poor Rikou is usually stuck somewhere in the middle. LOL

Warnings and Praises: There’s a good bit of humor, but it does have a little bit of violence, especially toward the end. Also, while Kubinashi’s floating head made me giggle every now and then, Inugami’s head is little disturbing when it detaches. o.O

It can be a little bizzare with all the strange demon characters running around, but I think it’s awesome! ^_^

The opening theme is subtitled in a foreign language, but it was the only one I could find that wasn’t mirrored and had the Night Parade scroll in the beginning.
Opening theme 1
Opening theme 2 – mirrored

And as for other anime in this genre, I’m really liking Blue Exorcist (currently being aired). I buy the manga for this one as well.

So let’s see… I haven’t been buying much in the way of Windstones lately so I went on an anime shopping spree on Amazon.com!!!

This is what I have coming in the mail (or I just got it)

Hetalia (complete series)
Highschool of the Dead (complete series)
Clannad (complete series – I’m pretty sure I got this because of a review I read on here)
Ghost Hound (complete series – ditto)
Black Cat (complete series)
Witchblade (complete series)
Black Butler (complete season one on two sets)
Gurren Lagann (complete series)
The Girl who Lept Through Time (complete)
Eden of the East (complete plus 1st movie)
Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22
Naruto movies 6, 7, & 8 (subtitled versions cause they’re not out yet)
K-On! (Disk 1)

and finally the Live Action Gantz movie, which I actually watched last night. I was expecting a total crap fest, but it actually wasn’t too bad! They made a few changes, but they were expected when trying to cram a huge series into a 2 hour movie.

also, the next FMA box is coming out at the end of this month, and the second Wolf and Spice season comes out at the end of next month! WOOT!

I can’t believe no one has reviewed Gurren Laggan.
No, I’m not going to do it because I am horrible at writing reviews. Plus I only saw the series sub’d (I hear the sub is better than the dub’d anyways) and I have a hard time remember and focusing properly while watching something that is only sub’d. Great example? Watched FMA:Brotherhood subbed and am now watching it in English and I’m like “I don’t remember any of this WTF?”

But I can do mini reviews for a few anime I really like.

Wolf’s Rain.
Loved it. I thought the ending was great. Confusing but good. Not everything has to end on a happy note. It was one of the few shows that made me sad for a few days after finishing (Cowboy Bebop was one of em)

Hellsing.(original and OVA)
This is how vampires should be. Violent, cruel, sick and twisted. I like violence and gore and this show doesn’t hold back. And the music is awesome. I’ve had the soundtracks for years and haven’t stopped listening.

Gurren Laggan.(not a review…sorta)
This show has it all. Crazy, over the top action. Goofy but likable character. Insanity, mayhem and makes no sense whatsoever moments.
This show is split into 2 parts. You could easily finish the first part leave it at that and be happy. But I think the second part really brings it all together.

I also enjoyed watching, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Elfin Leid, FMA and FMA:brotherhood and all the Miyazaki movies. Now thanks to these lovely reviews I have more anime to go and check out.

(I know I’m forgetting something…..*shrugs*)

Title: Deathnote

Synopsis: Light Yagami is a genius high school student who is bored out of his mind and resents increase of crime in the world around him. One day, his life totally changes when a shinigami named Ryuk drops a mysterious notebook, known as the Death Note. The Death Note’s instructions claim that if a human’s name is written in it, that person will die (there are a bunch of other rules as well, but you get the idea) Though Light is initially skeptical of the notebook’s authenticity, he realizes that the Death Note is real after experimenting with it on criminals. Light then plans to rid the world of evil by killing people he does not see fit to live so he may create a perfect world and become a god! As the death toll rises, the activity catches the attention of a master detective known only as “L”. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a game of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins.

Review: I really enjoyed this series. It gives you a sort of skewed slant on the different ways the human mind interprets justice and just how easy a genius can become a godlike lunatic! It was very It is a very serious mystery thriller and I just love the detective character “L” HAHAHA!!! If I was a guy, I would be exactly like him! (of course I doubt I would be quite as smart) Ryuk was also pretty awesome! It was a very interesting interpretation of a sort of old school Japanese superstition. The art work and animation was stunning and the voice cast was also noteworthy!

Warnings and Praises: Now as much as I liked the series some parts of it were just a BORE! I fell asleep several times watching the series, but it’s more of a psychological thriller then an action thriller. You can really only take it in small doses because your head will literally fill up with all the “just one step ahead of the other” constantly going on between Light and L. On a separate note, I also really loved the opening and closing music and animation. This is one of the only series I always watched the opening for. I loved all the songs by the band Maximum the Hormone <3

WOOT!!! Opening theme!

Title: Durarara!

Durarara!! Pictures, Images and Photos

Star Rating:

Review: I really enjoyed this series! It’s rare that I find a 24 episode series that doesn’t make me regret wasting my time watching it by the time I get to the end of it these days. I started watching this on adult swim and had to buy the series because I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. At first you wonder… okay what do ALL these characters have to do with eachother? Eventually their stories all intermingle and when things started coming together the overall plot blew my mind! It was very thoughfully put together and I highly recommend!

Warnings and Praises: There is quite a bit of violence (Shizuo tends to be the one causing most of it even though he hates violence, LOL) but overall I loved all the characters and the animation was beautifully done. There were moments that were a little overboard, but not so much it ruined the story. I was disappointed in one aspect that there was a lot of unanswered questions involving Celty, and I think that was the single most disheartening thing about the whole series.

as far as other things I’ve been watching

Hetalia –
OMG! I can’t get through this series no matter how hard I try!!! Why is it so popular?!? I feel drained after watching 15 minutes… seriously, all the do is make fun of Italians!!! >_< Shaun, my boyfriend can stomach it a bit longer then I can, but he just thinks it's funny how much the Japanese rag on EVERY nation while still being somewhat historically accurate. I just want to smash my head into a wall.

Highschool of the Dead –
Oh! I have to do a review for this one! It was EPIC!!! The only bad thing is that it ended!!! 5 STARS ON THIS!!! I'll write a review later, tho because this is SO NOT for children!!! It's like an American Zombie flick and anime had a zombie baby!!!

Clannad –
Another one I liked, but it was sort of dull.very adorable though and somewhat tragic. 3 1/2 stars here.

Black Butler –
Only a few episodes in so far so I don't know yet

Gurren Lagann –
Ditto

The Girl who Lept Through Time –
HAHAHA! This was a great movie! I loved watching her tumble into things trying to go back in time. For an anime movie, I liked it. I wanted more in the ending, but I always do, so I have to say it was a solid 4 stars.

Eden of the East –
The series was great! Overall a great "I have amnesia, and OMG I just figured out I am a super spy" story line. Very interesting concept, but I have to watch the movies that supposedly end the open ended ending on the series.

Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22 –
My head hurts… so far it is better then the original though, but you have to have watching the original to understand a thing.

Hope some of the little reviews help ^_^

Title: Hetalia! Seasons 1 and 2 Axis Powers
<img src="http://static.zerochan.net/full/48/30/424048.jpg"
Synopsis: There was a ton of Hetalia cosplay at Megacon this year, and so when I saw the first two seasons, 52 episodes, at the Funimation table for only $35 I jumped all over it. Great deal right? No. Each episode is like 8 minutes. If you understand that Hetalia was based off a web comic it’s easier to understand…well not really.
The countries of the world are depicted as people matching the wants, needs, desires, and cliches of their populace. When a country is new, it’s a chibi baby, but most countries look like young teenage boys or young adults in this, hmmm I wonder why.
So Hetalia is all about the interactions of these cute boy countries as they make alliances, go to war, and cook their nation’s popular foods. For example, everyone hates England because of his nasty plain English food, France is afraid of Germany, America eats only hamburgers and always wants to dominate the conversation, Japan celebrates the new year with ice cream and manga, and everyone thinks Canada is America and then forget he’s even in the room when corrected. There are actually some history lessons embedded in the WTF craziness of this show, but not too much.
Star Rating:

Review: It mostly strange…but kind of funny. It’s REALLY funny when your drinking. I was working on my fourth beer and fell off the sofa, nearly choking up my lungs, when minty bunny showed up for the first time. Yeah, England hallucinates magical critters everywhere…I am not entirely sure why.
Overall, if WTF craziness is your thing, get it. If not, watch it at a friend’s first or rent it before adding it to your anime collection. It’s weird, it’s funny, but mostly weird, and there is very very little plot. There really is just one thing to say about Hetalia: PASTA!
Warnings and Praises: Language warning, very very creative language warning lol. There is a skit on SNL with otaku college kids making a student TV show and the professor calls it “loving racism.” Hetalia is also an example of this. But the stereotypes are so cliche it’s hard to imagine anyone getting really angry about it. However, this is something for younger generations; I could see older WW2 era people being terribly offended, especially since seasons 1 and 2 are based on the Axis powers. Also, there is no actual Yaoi in it, but the pairings of different countries naturally lends itself to that sort of fan girl stuff.

Title: Burn-Up Excess

Synopsis: (from Wikipedia) The story revolves around Rio Kinezono, a buxom member of the team who consistently overspends her paycheck, but is also a top-flight martial artist and a valuable member of the team. In the field, Rio is usually flanked by Maya Jingu, the green-haired team sniper who appears to have a serious lust for ranged weapons (specifically assault rifles). Their antics are backed up by the inventions of Nanvel Candlestick, the exotic team engineer whose job is to devise and implement special combat and surveillance hardware for the team’s use. Lilica Ebett, the sprightly pink-haired girl who’s a computer expert, can pretty much crack into any information system, and Yuji Naruo, a perverted, camera-toting voyeur, always serves as Warrior’s drop-operation pilot and driver. Maki Kawasaki, the mysterious, bespectacled superintendent, is charged with commanding Warrior in the field and administering their various missions as they arise.

Star Rating:

Review: This one is a good one for laughs and one of the most fun features of the dvd was I think it’s called the Jiggly Counter, it’s basically a counter of bust jiggles. Rio is the one that makes me laugh, usually she screws things up a bit then later goes all tough on it if the need arises. But mostly her bumbling does it, she can’t save money for the life her which often leads her to take jobs she shouldn’t. Maya’s love of guns can be quite funny too and her visit to her family ep just kills me every time.

Warnings and Praises: This series isn’t all fun and games though, there’s some shocking deaths that might leave you going why? but overall this anime keeps to the funny theme. There’s the usual silly nudity but what anime with girls doesn’t really?
