Princess Mononoke is still the best Miyazaki by far in mu opinion. I like Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away though. I recently watched Ponyo and though it was adorable I wanted to fall asleep x.x

The hubby and I watched Ponyo on Netflix… after the credits, we both turned to each other and said, “Weird”. LOL

P.S. I would not be swimming in water with giant prehistoric fish that could easily NOM you in seconds! XD *insert Jaws theme music*

Miyazaki has a thing about adapting books he likes. Did anyone ever see the Miyazaki Earthsea movie? I think they were dubbing it in English soon.

Gah! Thanks for reminding me!! I need to remember to put that on my Netflix queue! And it’s actually Miyzaki’s son who is directing the Earthsea one 🙂 My boyfriend saw it and said that he takes after his father in style, which I would think is a good thing!

I’ve always loved every Miyazaki film that I’ve seen. Princess Mononoke was my first, but Spirited Away has always held a really special spot in my heart and has been my favorite ever since I first saw it 🙂 Howl’s Moving Castle is really adorable though, I really liked it.

Has anyone seen Porco Rosso? It’s a more mature Miyazaki film but I thought it was great, and of course had the same silly humored moments as his stuff normally does 🙂 Also, Michael Keaton! He does a great job as a voice actor, and that’s something that I couldn’t really picture until I heard it.

Title: Nyan Koi!
<img src="http://animeyume.com/blog_images/fall09_firsts_nyan_koi.jpg"

Synopsis: (taken from AnimeNewsNetwork) Junpei Kōsaka is a second-year high school student who despises cats and has an allergy to them. It just so happens that his high school crush is Kaede Mizuno, a girl who adores cats. One day, while walking home from school, Junpei kicks an empty can and unfortunately beans the local neko-jizō-sama (guardian deity of cats). He finds he can now understand what cats are saying, including his family’s own ill-tempered cat, Nyamusasu. However, if he does not grant 100 wishes from cats, he will turn into cat himself.

Star Rating:

Review: omg… randomness. While I usually read reviews and watch a trailer or a couple of clips before choosing an anime, there are times when I just pick them on an absolute whim. This was one of them. I read the description and thought, “Sure. Why not.” LOL!

Poor Junpei… he has the WORST luck ever. No matter what he does, he just can’t seem to make it work with Mizuno (although she likes him, too). There are always complications, including other female friends. Now throw in requests from the local cats (some of them strange), and nothing seems to go right. But that’s what happens when you’re cursed by the local cat deity.

This one was fun, and I actually enjoyed it (I loved the cats!)…but I just didn’t feel like I could give it a higher rating. I thought some of the characters were a little weak, and the series just needed a little more emotion (it was just lacking some oomph). I really think that was my biggest problem with this one. It was just lacking some “feeling” to balance out the humor. Other than that, it did keep me entertained, and I really enjoyed the last episode. And I mean, c’mon, talking anime cats! I had to watch! XD

If you’re picky about your anime, you should probably pass on this one (unless you really like cats… LOL). If you just want something fun and not looking for a masterpiece, then you might enjoy it. It’s just 12 episodes. I will watch the second season when it comes out. There will be one… the kitty cats said so.

Warnings and Praises: There’s some adult/sexual humor. I’d even say slightly perverted/ecchi (see opening). There’s also a teeny-tiny amount of cussing in the subtitles.

I just got done watching Trigun today, so I’m going to try to do a mini review of it and also Soul Eater, which I finished sometime last week.

Trigun

I thought this series was very good. I immediately liked Vash, Meryl and Milly, and I thought the jokes and antics are really fun throughout the series. Vash definitely grows as a character and many slightly nonsense things that he does in the first half of the series start to make sense with the second half, which I thought was a nice touch. I was a little disappointed that some of the other characters don’t get much of a back story, and I think it was definitely something that could have been doable in a 26 episode series.

Of course the first anime that comes up in my mind that does develop its characters really well in 26 episodes is Cowboy Bebop. Which is interesting because I see a lot of similarities between the two series, the most obvious of which being the basic setting of a “space western”. I’m not sure if that’s a genre or not, but it should be! I like them. XD

I’m going to put a spoiler alert here because I want to go into a little detail about the similarities of these two series – if you haven’t seen both, don’t look! If you have, highlight the text in the space below.

To me, Vash and Spike represented the same type of character (with obvious differences of course – Vash refuses to kill where Spike won’t think twice to if he needs to), they’re both relatively benevolent guys who don’t want to see the people around them get hurt. Both of them have women companions (who once drove one another crazy) who may have romantic feelings towards them though they’ve never acted on it. Both of them have opposite counterparts, with which they have a battle with in the end. The thing I like about Trigun is that I get the happy ending that I wanted in Cowboy Bebop! However, I think Cowboy Bebop’s storyline as a whole will stick with me for longer, and resonated with me better.

Beyond the fact that I have a pretty similar anime with which to compare it to, Trigun does do really well in keeping you entertained. As was said in the original review, there are some parts that are emotionally striking and downright depressing, but that strengthens the anime as a whole by making it more dynamic. It wasn’t my favorite anime, but it was really good and I would recommend it to anyone who liked Cowboy Bebop in particular 🙂

Soul Eater

Soul Eater was really quite good. It reminds me of Bleach in the way that sometimes battles can continue through a couple of episodes (I know other animes do this, I just can’t think of any right now!), but the animation in the action scenes was so consistently awesome that I really didn’t mind. It had lots of likable characters, each meister/weapon pair with their own introductory episode and back story, which was awesome.

But really, the most amazing character from Soul Eater is most definitely..

EXCALIBUR!!!
(just SEEING a picture of him and I hear the little song he sings – English dub, forgive me!) Excalibur had me laughing out loud every time he was in an episode, he had to be my favorite character on the show. By a little bit! 🙂

All of the characters were really great, and I also really liked Stein and his storyline, although it tended to be a little creepy. The entire series was a little creepy, in a fun Halloween type of way! Some of the monsters could get strange looking, but there was always a kawaii character just a screen or two away to balance it all out!

The overarching storyline was good enough to keep me watching and guessing on what was going to happen, but SPOILER: I was honestly disappointed in the ending. I was expecting it to wrap up quickly, which wasn’t what bothered me. It felt a little cheap that everything boiled down to “bravery”. My reaction was kind of: Bravery? Really? That’s IT? UUuugh.. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen too many stories that end in a similar fashion, but for whatever reason I just thought it was lame, especially compared to the depth of the rest of the story. All in all, I thought it was a really great series and I would watch it again for the animation alone 🙂

So how many are going to drive hours to find a theater when the new Trigun movie hits a few select American theaters? Everyone knows I'll have my Vash coat ready, now I need a spiked blonde wig to fit my enormous head! ^_^

Yup! It’s called “Badlands Rumble” or something like that. They premeired it already at Anime Expo earlier this year, but it was subbed. They are supposedly working on the dubbing now for release to threaters later this year ^_^ SQUEAL!

I was able to see the Fullmetal Alchemist movie at a theater about 45 minutes from me, it was AWESOME!!! There were SO MANY cosplayers there!!! All the ravenous fan girls squealed when Alphonse made his first on screen debut in the movie in the desert when he was trying to drink the water, but was all out so he used alchemy to make the big well that shot the water out. It was SO FUNNY! The water was sprinkling on his face and it was a sea of “SIGHS OF LOVE” throughout the theater! LOL

Review: First, I am going to apologize now as this is probably going to turn into a big rant. I’ll probably jump back and forth from one thing to another, from what I liked to what I didn’t. So, I truly apologize for this… but I figured any review is better than none. LOL.

This series was obviously drawn for a female audience. There are no average-looking characters. Every single character is drawn to be flawlessly beautiful. The main group, the bad guys, the doctor, the butler, and yes, even the cook. All the dreamy guys with their hair blowing in the wind. I know, I shouldn’t be complaining, right? But it is soooo blatant. One word comes to mind – OVERKILL. At one point I actually felt insulted. Did you have to go this far overboard and attract an audience this way because they wouldn’t be interested in something called a plot?? Then I look to the right at the episode comments, and they all go something like this… “OMG, I love the anime. LUKA IS SOOOO HOT!”… um, nevermind. Obviously, this anime wasn’t made for me. LOL. If someone else wants to go all fangirl in my place, feel free. I won’t judge, I promise. Even I’ve gone fangirl a few times, but this wasn’t one of them. XD

Yes, then there’s Luka. The uber powerful supernatural hottie with dark hair that falls over his piercing eyes, all dressed in black, who has turned away from his dark nature because of his love for Yuki and constantly spurts “I will protect you”. Oh, and he’s a vampi- Wait. Wha-? He’s NOT a vampire?? Oh, he’s a demon… because that makes a difference. OK. Sure. Fine. Whatever, Edward. Call me when the whole darkness cliché is over. 😛

Did I mention they all live at a place called Twilight Mansion? BTW, I’m NOT a Twilight-hater. I have the books and seen the movies. It’s just that this setup is so overdone; I can’t enjoy it anymore. Secretly, I wished that Luka’s blood contract had ended and that he would have slaughtered the whole friggin’ lot of them. Mwuhahaha! 👿

Oh, and the mansion’s manager is all pimped out like the Mad Hatter – colorful big hat and coat tails. Why? No idea. More fan service, I guess. Plus, he had Urahara’s Japanese voice, so every time he talked, I kept seeing the green and white striped hat in my head.

OK, things I did like. I liked the music, the overall animation was nice, and there were times where I found myself really engaged in the episodes. They never gave you the entire backstory, but they never left you in the dark either (until the end). They gave you just enough information along the way to keep you informed, interested, but never lost. I also found some of the Zweilt characters emotionally interesting. I liked the fact the pairs are purposely reincarnated together and have different abilities.

I can’t forget Sodom, Luka’s shape-shifting familiar. Sodom was definitely my favorite character. Sodom was perfect for comic relief. There’s very little humor in this anime (as it should be), and when they threw in the random chibi moments, it felt very out of place. They should have left the small amount of humor to Sodom, as his innocent nature is part of his character. Ooooh, and Ashley’s creepy dolls. Those were awesome! That’s what I would expect from a demon. I wish they would have been in more episodes. If you’ve ever read Brom’s The Plucker, then you have an idea of what I’m talking about.

Now to the ending, it was awful… or maybe I should say lack thereof. I was hoping that the ending would have made up for the other things I found annoying, but the total lack of an ending was the last straw. There are no words to describe my thoughts on this. If I did, Jen’s forum filter would just change it to something nice anyway. XD

The ending for Soul Eater I did not mind, mostly because I like the whole duality thing. When Asura couldn’t understand why Maka could fight with her fear, I was fine with that. And I absolutely hated the ending for Wolf’s Rain. Was it a “bad” ending? No. I just didn’t like it (understatement) because I felt so much for the characters. With this anime, I was prepared for either kind of situation, as it seemed it was heading in one of these two directions. Uh, no. This ending was crap. My mind had played out a variety of endings. I would have accepted absolute apocalyptic tragedy to anything lame that would have fit into the storyline. Nope, neither. Maybe they’re planning a second season? It was appalling at how much they left hanging. :stare:

To sum it up, I’m not adding it to my collection (not even for the hotties). Maybe I was PMSing or something when I watched this one. Hopefully, you won’t find it as blatant as I did. LOL.

Warnings and Praises: For an anime based on a thousand year old war, there is very little blood. Also, I would maybe consider this light shounen-ai… it’s more of an innuendo kind of thing. Since the Zweilt fighting pairs are constantly reincarnated together, and since they remember the past, the pairs are extremely close and share an inseparable bond. No other person matters more to them than their partner (except for Yuki, for whom they will all die fighting to protect).
