      I’ve heard enamel is okay only if it doesn’t cover the entire piece.  Mainly because of the gypsum breathing thing.

            I can support the fact that hand brushing can look just as good as airbrush. I’ve done both and there are a few techniques that can let you achieve a smooth multi color look that is pretty close to airbrush and doesn’t leave thick paint or brush stroke imprints.
