I just wanted to post a cautionary warning to anyone who is using Canada Post to send/receive Windstones and other items.

I work for Canada Post ….(so please no bashing 😉 ) Our contract has expired and we are in talks with the employer, negotiating things. I wont get into the details of it, and I am really hoping we dont go on strike, as money is tight enough as it is, without loosing my pay check…. but in the end, a strike, or a lock-out, may happen no matter how I feel, LOL!

So as of JULY 2ND the Union will have the right to strike, or the employer may lock us out. Either way, when, and IF, this happens, all mail within the Canada Post mail system will cease to move. Anything in the mail stream will remain in limbo until work is resumed.

If a strike (or lock out) happens there is no way to know how long it may last…. from a week to a few weeks, to months….. but it lasting THAT long is not very likely since Canada Post is such an important service.

So just a warning, if your ordering any items, or sending any out…. if it is still in transit within Canada as of JULY 2ND… it will be at risk of getting stuck. A strike may not happen at all….. and hopefully it doesnt ! But I just wanted to post this so everyone knows and is aware of the risk.

Yeah it’s weird I was getting warnings from my bank online about a possible Canada Post strike or disruption of mail service and I didn’t know what was going on so that’s good to know. I guess that means I will have to hurry up with finalizing trades and sales this week.

Looking for rainbow or pink & teal grab bags!

Good luck and hope if it happens it’s short. I always use Canada post and USPS because for me they are more reliable. My dad was a postman for 35 years in BC, Canada. I vaguely remember when they were on strike once when I was young.

Thanks for the support everyone 🙂

And no, we are not in disagreements for more money….as a lot of people will assume. Its for job security/stability…for instance there is currently a maximum distance they can force a person to move to. For instance they could say there is a position 15mins away at another office and you have to take it …but ifs it too far away you could refuse and keep your current position. They are trying to change that to province wide, so they could say if you want to keep your job you have to move to the other end of the province to work at a postal facility there. Thats insane to be able to uproot someone like that so of course we are fighting that.

There is also our pension which is at risk….and is a big deal for a lot of us. And there are many other issues as well such as things like our paid half hour lunch they may try to take away etc etc.

Im not big into the union really, so Im noy up to date on all the issues, but there is a strike vote tomorrow that I will be attending so I should learn more.

I really hate all the drama that goes with all this at work…I rather enjoy my job and try to enjoy my days there are share some laughs etc….I mean I spend so much time working you might as well as enjoy it…if not my life would be pretty miserable lol ! So for the most part I avoid the drama and just try to have fun lol !

So heres hoping all this blows over quickly and life can get back to normal soon ! If I hear any news that may indicate a strike is coming though, I will let you guys know 🙂

Well….things dont seem to be looking good. We asked for a 2 week extension in the cooling-off period so we could further work to secure a deal, but the corporation refused.

We made a little head-way, with them leaving our pensions alone, at least for those already hired.

But there are still issues that need addressing :

            The Corporation wants-

1- Eliminate protection of the 493 Corporate Offices permitting CPC to close all corporate retail facilities
….this would mean they could close all corporate retail outlets. Then the only places to mail parcels etc. would be at the postal outlets that are found in places like Shoppers Drug mart. These employees are not canada post employees and they only have to get paid minimum wage, or whatever the rate at that store offers. For the most part these people also don’t get proper training. The biggest issue with this though is all the jobs that would be lost ( resulting in surplus), and with people doing our work that arent CPC employees.

2- Reducing the percentage of full-time workers to part-time workers. Allowing them to hire less full-time workers….and use more Part timers. I been with Canada Post for 16yrs now….and it doesnt look like I will ever get full time 🙁

3- They also want to use temporary workers to deliver parcels on evenings and weekends….instead of creating more jobs…..plus there are many other issues.

Cut-backs and roll-backs, thats all they ever do even though Canada Post IS profitable. Deepak Chopra, the CEO of Canada Post, makes 500k a year plus bonuses !!! Thats more than Prime Minister Trudeau ! Plus they have 22 VP’s…. why does Canada Post need that many !! Thats where the cut-backs should be done….not with us, the people who actually do the work and care about the customers….

*sigh *….. sorry for the rant. Its just so frustrating and stressful. What makes it worse is that the general public thinks we are greedy posties and that we may strike just because we want more money…. but thats just not the case. We are trying to keep what we have and not have so many roll-backs…. 🙁

Typical corporation where all the people at the top make the most money and want to cut back on people who really need the money and hours. Canada Post has been making good profits with online shopping in the last couple of years so I don’t know why they won’t just cooperate with negotiations. This is a pain for people like me that depend on selling an shipping things for money. I also was wanting to order in a couple things I need but have been waiting for the last week to see what would happen before I buy or sell anything else. I guess we will find out soon enough what will happen.

The part that blows me away the most in all this is that the head of Canada Post, Deepka Chopra (known for all those “spiritual” books) is making millions of dollars per year and whose net worth is estimated at over $80 million has moved so far away from his “spiritual” statements as to s****w over regular people who are just trying to make a living.

                Phooey on him.

                Life is beautiful.

Kim yes, thats so true. There are many small businesses that rely on Canada Post and who could suffer greatly if we get locked out.

In the news yesterday Alberta Federation of Labour has asked Prime Minister Trudeau to fire Deepak as even he thinks Deepak is ” deliberately engineering a lockout and service disruption ”

AFL calls on Prime Minister to fire Canada Post CEO over manufactured crisis – AFL

Scathach, this is a different Deepak Chopra, there are 2 people with the same name 😉 I didn’t know this myself until I asked some coworkers.

                #949465

Just so everyone is aware there has to be a 72hr notice given to strike or be locked-out. ( unless something else happens like rotating strikes, which may cause the Corporation to immediately lock us out, but Im not 100% sure on that one )

Right now no notices have been served…..all this not knowing though is drving me craxy !

Thank you 🙂 And thanks to everyone on the forum, your support means a lot to me.

Its hard for a lot of us Postal Workers….a lot of the public frown on us, and there are lots of misconceptions. One big one is most people in Canada still think that their tax dollars pay for our wages, but thats not true. Canada Post is a crown corporation and it is profitable and actually makes money for the government. And no, we DONT want to strike……some of us live check to check and if we do strike I just dont know how some of us on strike will get by, its scary.

And the big one is people think its all about us wanting more money but again thats just not the case. *sigh*

So yes, any little support shown by people does help lift the spirits! Thank you so much 🙂
