I have recently been exploring different mediums and trying to see where these paths take me… and it’s been pretty interesting! I never thought I would get into sculpture but I guess stranger things have happened. I thought I would share the outcome of my experiments. This is a cat (he was supposed to have wings) and he’s pretty rough.. I think I was too anxious to get him into the oven and see what would happen. π³ Then I went crazy with painting. Had so much fun that there will be many more experiments to come…

March 19, 2010 at 6:31 pm #808640I just looove this kitty! You did a great job DD, both on the sculpt and the painting! π
March 19, 2010 at 6:50 pm #808641AnonymousWow, your cat is awesome! This is the first time you sculpted something HOLY COW you need to definately do more. Excellent even! I’m impressed!! WTG and all that jazz, very very good π π
March 19, 2010 at 11:13 pm #808642Thanks everyone π Yeah, last time I sculpted something was in third grade. Oh, and it was a cat. π³ Funny how some things never change! I have the wire armature(?) just about done for the next one. Boy did I learn a lot on this first one that the next one should definitely be an improvement. I think it also gives me a much MUCH greater appreciation for Melody’s work!!
By the way… for the next one I want to use eyes embedded in it. Someone suggested to me to use ball bearings. But I don’t think I could paint those and it would be weird/creepy with just silvery eyes. Not sure how glass would hold up in the oven? Any other ideas?

That cat sculpture is really cool! I love it π . Is it done in a polymer clay? If it is, baking the glass eyes in, I do that all the time π . There are a few things to keep in mind when you do this though. First, you have to make sure the colors on or in the glass will take the heat needed to cure the clay. Most can because they are painted with an enamel that requires baking to make the color permanent on the glass. I tend to buy my glass eyes from this sight and have had pretty good luck with them. http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/category/glass-eyes
I also like to use marbles, both the round and flattened ones. They also can take the heat of a oven and have an interesting look to them – especially the aurora colored ones.
Second, you need to make sure the glass eyes are very clean before you bake the sculpture. They should be free from fingerprints and clay residue, because sometimes those residues can be baked on the the glass and become a nasty film on the eyes that can be permanent. This doesn’t always happen, but it’s better to be safe than sorry π .
Hope that helps. Good luck on your next sculpt!March 20, 2010 at 1:25 am #808645You guys are making want to bust out the clay. A friend of the family gave me 40-50 pounds of sculpting material. It’s sitting on the floor in my closet. hmmm….
I CAN’T WAIT to see your next one! π
March 20, 2010 at 9:06 am #808646Spectacular! I can’t believe that is your first try. You did an awesome job. I like the markings and the color scheme. It make me think of an Egyptian cat deity.

Is super sculpy a polymer clay? i get a bit nervous experimenting with stuff (especially if i put a lot of time into it and wouldn’t want it to explode in the oven! i think i would cry for days). but i am so excited to hear that glass eyes shouldnt be too big of a problem! going to go check out that site now…
