Last month, while killing some time in the city, I wandered into a gift shop and was shocked to see that they had a peacock Old Warrior in one of their display cases. This is pretty much the one dragon I’ve had my heart set on owning since I first discovered Windstone, but since they were retired, I thought I’d lost my chance. I decided to ask one of the people working there about possibly putting it on hold, and was told I could make a down payment in any amount I chose, and make payments until it was paid off. I couldn’t believe my luck. At the time, I’d just started a new job and hadn’t been paid yet — I actually didn’t wind up getting paid for four weeks, ergh — but I went ahead and made a down payment of all that I could afford, a whole $7. I was assured that this would be okay, and that no one would touch my dragon until I came to take him home.
About a week later, I got a phone call from the store asking about the item I’d put on layaway. As far as I knew, they were just calling to confirm that I was still interested, which I definitely was. Well, today I went in to make another payment (since I’m actually earning money now)… and found out that my dragon had been sold. The manager or whatever said he had to make an “executive decision” and never would have agreed to letting me keep him on hold for such a small payment. I was heartbroken. He gave me the $7 back and said he’d try to order another, but since they’re retired, I’m not holding my breath. I actually broke down and cried when we left the store, I was so upset. I can’t understand why he didn’t get in contact with me before selling something that, as far as I knew, was as good as mine. If he really needed me to put more money down, I would have worked something out (my fiance would have been more than happy to spot me the money, ’cause he knew what it meant to me). I think it was a pretty scummy thing to do, and he probably has no understanding of how it made me feel, so I thought I’d share my story with people who are more likely to understand how upset and angry I am.
Also, if any of you have any ideas or suggestions for how I could still get my OW, I’d love to hear ’em. Getting to see one in person just made me want one more.

WHAT A JERK! 👿
The fact that they agreed to hold it for you for $7, he should have respected the deal and hold it until you could pay him. What he did was totaly wrong! He should have contacted you before selling it to someone else. I think he must have been scared that you would not pay him since you had only given him $7. I assume he had a buyer that would purchase it right away and did not want to miss out. But this still does not excuse his behaviour.Hey I’m in Canada too…where are you?
September 16, 2007 at 1:31 am #617256Yes, or at least have the decency to call you and say he needed more money! They are still out there. I will keep an eye out for you! 😀
September 16, 2007 at 1:34 am #617257That sucks! I’m sorry! They do pop up every once and a while on ebay, or are spotted here or there in stores, so I’d say keep putting your money aside in a ‘Peacock OW fund’ of sorts. I’ll keep my eyes out for one!
Oh yeah, and welcome!
September 16, 2007 at 1:50 am #617258awww, lame! 🙁 I’m sorry – I’ve been in similar circumstances, and I know how crummy that feels… I hope you get your Old Warrior!
That was a really crummy executive decision…that dude needs some lessons on how to run a store!"He that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."

Yeah, I know. When I told him that I’d made an agreement with one of his employees, he said that was his fault, for “poor training.” Well, I work in retail too, and I think that even if one of your employees makes a mistake like that, the agreement should either be honoured or modified. You don’t go against it and make the customer pay for someone else’s mistake. It wasn’t my fault things weren’t handled properly, and yet I’m the one losing out as a result.
He never got back to me, even though both I and my fiance called to say I still wanted the dragon. It just frustrates me to no end.
I’m in Ottawa, so not too far from you, it seems. : )

I would have appreciated a call. As I said, if I’d known more money was needed, I would have worked it out. My fiance was helping me to pay for him anyway, so it wouldn’t have been an issue. I wasn’t even given the chance to do that, though.
I’m really upset about all this. I was treating myself to that dragon as sort of a reward for sticking with a lousy part-time, minimum wage job that I hate instead of walking out the million or so times I was tempted to quit. : (

Thanks so much, I really would appreciate knowing there are people out there looking out for one. It’s really kind of you. : )
And thank you. : )

That was a really crummy executive decision…that dude needs some lessons on how to run a store! It really felt awful. I sort of went into shock as soon as he said it was already gone, and didn’t hear much else of what he said after that. My fiance, Matt, was with me at the time and he said he could tell how heartbroken I was, apparently I looked absolutely devastated. Part of me hopes he (the manager) saw it too, and saw me in tears outside of his store. I doubt it makes any difference to him, though.
They have a few other dragons in there, and I’d been thinking of getting a few others once I started earning a steadier income, since they’d been so nice to me. Now not only will I not be spending any of my money there, I’ll be telling others about how I was treated and warn them against shopping there, too. I won’t have my money going to a person who’d rather make a quick buck than honour a promise made to a customer.
September 16, 2007 at 2:31 am #617263What store did you go to? If you don’t mind me asking?

It’s called Just Curious, in the Rideau Centre.
September 16, 2007 at 2:39 am #617265That is so lousey! If they said they would hold it for you and accepted your money, then they should have honored the deal even if your down payment was only a nickel! That’s just too bad 🙁
But we do have a great “spotter” system around here, so if someone else happens across one and knows you’re looking… 🙂 It’s happened many times before, so don’t give up on your dream dragon!

I never shop there.
I go to Sam’s, Jewelry Encounter on Carling. and also at Accent Decor in Orleans shopping center.September 16, 2007 at 3:52 am #617267I can sort of understand what you are going through. I was talking to a local antique and curio dealer about them possibly selling Windstones there, since it’s a pain to ship them over the border on my own. After a couple weeks, and after helping a forum member here buy a Rainbow Emperor that the store managed to have laying around from years ago, the store owner said he would place an order. I was so excited, I was trying to decide what piece to get if I was offered an award for getting their business to sell Windstones. I even gave a down payment on a fledgy that I wanted them to order in for me.
…and nothing happened. There was no call, and I waited for 2 months before I went to the store again (mostly because work stopped me from going in any sooner). They had decided not to sell Windstones after all. They saw it as a “poor investment”, and gave me back my money. The killer is, they decided against selling days after I paid them…I don’t think they would have even tried to refund my money if I hadn’t shown up. I’m still upset about it all 👿
