Ok, I read Nambroth’s tutorial on how to antique, but I am a little confused. Do you mix the stain medium with acrylic paint? If so, how do you know what color of acrylic paint to mix it with? I will be doing my first PYO soon! I am excited! So, that’s why I’m reading the tutorial! 🙂
Oh, also-when you wipe off the stain medium, the tutorial says to wait until it’s “nearly dry.” when is “nearly dry”? I don’t want it to become too dry if I decide to try to antique my PYO. 😳
You can antique with lots of colors! Different colors give different effects…generally you want to antique with a color similar to the color you’re antiquing over, but darker to give the effect of shadow. But you can also antique with a lighter color – this gives a completely different effect, and it can be fun to play with!
If you wipe it off when it is too wet, it won’t stay in the recesses. If you do it when it’s too dry, it will stay on where you don’t want it or else it might take off the paint underneath with it…you have to wipe it away when it’s still a little tacky. As long as you don’t have a fan blowing on it or anything, you can usually walk away from it for 5 minutes or so and come back to wipe it off. With all things in antiquing, practice is the key!! And experimentation too…Nam antiques with a sponge, I antique with a paper towel and others do best with their finger.

You can use whatever color you want (IE: Frozen has antiqued pink things with purple antique) or you can use a color that is a little darker than what you are antiquing. I, personally, just use antique gel. I have found it in two shades of brown and one of black. No mixing… just spread on and wipe off. How long you leave it on depends on how dark you want the antique. If is gets too dry (Dont leave it on very long) then you can wipe more off with a damp paper towel. That method leaves a very clean result.
I was wondering- do you seal the piece first- every attempt at antiquing I have made takes off the paint too- I am not rubbing hard etc and even when I try wiping it off almost immediately- still takes off the paint. I got tired of having to repaint everything so I stopped trying- but I never tried on an already sealed piece.

I believe the green keeper dragon in Miss Melodys’ gallery was antiqued after it was sealed. I always do it before, but I have wanted to try it after and see how it came out.
I was having a similar problem with the piece I did for the PYO swap and was given advice to seal it before I antiqued it and I’m so glad I was. I sealed my piece, gave it a full day to dry and then did the antiquing. Worked wonderfully and I didn’t have any paint come off!
If the color is metallic, I antique without sealing. If it’s not metallic, then yes, I put on the clear coating, otherwise, the paint just goes its own way!

I actually had this problem at first, before I ‘officially’ worked for Windstone. I was using craft paints and they were peeling/scraping off when I antiqued. 🙁 I haven’t had that problem since I have been using Golden paints though. But yes, you can seal it before antiquing if you want! 🙂 That should help.
