New hatching dragon

This is the first test paint I did of the NEW hatching dragon.
This little guy will replace the OLD hatching dragon.
The OLD hatching dragon is almost impossible to paint quickly enough for us to afford to sell it at a reasonable price. It has so much “edge” area where the different colors have to be painted on SOOOO carefully… after that last batch we painted, I finally said “OK, we are DONE with this piece!”
We will probably continue to make the OLD hatchers as ebay pieces, but no more production ones!

See how I got around the edge problem on the NEW hatching dragon?
No rock base to paint, that is one big improvement.
He is cast in two pieces!
The little dragon can be airbrushed separately, and then, when he is nice and dry, glued into his pristine egg shell -no paint drips!!
I added a pic of the little dragon out of his egg so you can see how he fits inside of it.It took a lot of fitting and sanding to get him to fit snugly.

I forgot to put the jewels in the foreheads of these dragons, but they will have them.

  1. He’s so cute! What a creative solution to the egg problem! Can’t wait to see him come out.

Out of curiosity, will you do a run of these in any of the older colors like peacock, emerald, and white?

  2. AMAZING! His face is super cute like the fledgling dragon. Can’t wait to see them in the store! Would this be a dragon sculpt you’d want to try out as a grab bag piece? =D

  3. How adorable is he!!! and I love that he doesn’t have a rock base. That always took away the illusion for me.

How big is he compared to the other hatching dragon?

  4. *bounces around and wiggles in hatcher cuteness induced joy*

Melody! The new hatcher is ADORABLE! Gleeeeeee!!!!

(And yes, please, old hatchers as ebay pieces!)

    YAAAAY!

  5. Melody! You’re going to make us all faint from excitement if you keep showing us all these new beauties you’ve been making! 😉

These little one is ADORABLE!!! He makes my heart just melt!

  6. He’s adorable! Totally never liked the old one, but this one will definetly be added to my collection, especialy if you make him/her in the old colors. Really need a rainbow one, please!

My master plan is to paint these in every color of dragon we have done, so they match all the families. The only exception is the ruby and flame colors, because the red paint is a pain.

I would LOVE a rainbow hatching dragon!!!

And I can just imagine the feeding frenzy when these hit the store for the first time!

  11. So can we see the two pieces or is that a trade secret? 🙂
How can you make green ones if you don’t have any more of the old green paint…?

We still have a little bit of the old green paint. I thought it was cool to paint new dragons using the very same green paint that we used 25 years ago, but it doesn’t really matter, we could have more made.

  13.
Wow, can I steal that red fire with blue eyes? That looks fantastic! XD
I love red dragons with blue eyes, but I got outvoted when we chose an eye color for them. So I stick blue eyes in my own.

LOL!! Steph, you beat me, I would love to have this little RF for my hatchling collection!!

They look AWESOME Melody!!! Can’t wait to see them in person.

  15. The new hatching is adorable! ^^ But I have to say, my favorite is the old one – he’s just more cute to me. But I’m always happy to see new pieces, and the way you got around the painting problem is pretty ingenious!

  16. I really like this hatcher soooooo much more than the old ! Will it be making an appearance in the store real soon or will it take several months before we see him ? just want to have some money set aside for one. 😉

  17. The new hatchling is very cute! I think the style of the new one blends beautifully with the fledging and the hatching emperor/empress style of dragon. Which will make the family look more balanced & so awesome when they are all together! I’m really glad you will be making them in the older colors too; I have the classic white family and its so wonderful that you will be making a new piece for my ‘old’ family!
