Never miss an opportunity to show off my fur kids!
The three pugs this Christmas in their pjs.
Ickis is on the left; he’s half pug, half chihuahua. Pearl is the black one in the middle & Tank is on the right yowling his displeasure that I haven’t given him the treat I am bribing them all with for the pics. 😉 Both Tank and Pearl are full pugs. The two cats ‘helping’ me sew
Carmy is the black one on the left & Neko is on the right.I have *lots* more pics but those will do for now. 😉
lamortefille wrote:Watched a few vidoes. Very, very cool! Ok, more questions…did you design and make your own costume? I love all of your back tassels..they really accentuate the hip swaying. Are there guidelines for the costumes? Are there guidelines for how each move is performed? It seems that the moves are more suggestive than erotic…imagine a pole dancer doing the same moves? That may sound odd, but you’re performing to cultural norms, I assume?
Anyway, you all look great and I give you 5 stars! I probably couldn’t balance the sword standing still, or sway like that w/o putting my back out. lol
It depends on what costume you are talking about. I make some of the pieces and buy others but I put everything together; you cant just buy a whole set of what I wear somewhere. 🙂 There are guidelines for the costumes set forth by our troupe leader so we look cohesive. Yes, there are guidelines on how each move is performed as well; we rehearse the cues and the moves to get them down and then use them in the dance.
As for the second part of your statement I’m trying hard not to be upset; not at you but at the general misconceptions on belly dance. My Husband sometimes has the same ones so it’s a bit of a sore spot and an ongoing battle for me. :p
Most belly dance is *NOT* supposed to be erotic. Most belly dancers are not strippers. Not even close. We have to worry about things like showing the bottom of our foot or which way we are facing when we open our knees a little to plie in case we will offend someone (middle eastern culture has a lot of weird quirks). We aren’t trying to be suggestive or erotic. We aren’t trying to turn people on. I think the closest we get to that would be ‘cutesy’ or even ‘coy’ sometimes but that’s it. Our dance IS a dance form just like ballet, tap or jazz or whatever; we aren’t doing it to be sexy but to take part in an art form and to enjoy ourselves.
Don’t get me wrong; I’ve got nothing against strippers. Have had quite a few friends who are strippers. I’ve even dabbled in burlesque myself but have kept belly dance and burlesque VERY separate for fear of enforcing misconceptions.
Here is a link to Wiki on belly Dance for a little more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belly_dance
Anywhoo… thank you for your compliments. Sorry to rant a bit; it just hurts
Thanks! 🙂 Yep, it really is a neat form of dance. We rehearse the moves and cues, have a general idea of what our drummers will be playing for rhythms (for example, fast troupe, slow sword, skirt; all of these have rhythms that are appropriate) but then we go from there for performances!
We do some choreography sometimes but not as often; sometimes it’s mixed into songs (like the second half of Ya’halla was choreo to recorded music). My troupe leader wants to do more of it this year with the Pro Troupe so we’ll see! 🙂
lamortefille wrote:Very cool re: the swords; thanks for the info! You have any videos on YouTube or elsewhere?
Sure thing. Here is our channel onYoutube: http://www.youtube.com/user/tribalevolution#p/u
I’m not in all the videos but I am in alot of them; just look for my hair. 😉
Favorite vids:
Y’halla Y’all ’08: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dktjb8msK78
Holiday show (has some sword too!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q52RZKnMqrQEDIT: Forgot to mention that both of the above videos are both improv. We don’t plan out the routine before we go onstage but communicate with each other via various cues. So up until the lead dancer (which always is changing) gives the rest of the dancers the cue we don’t know what is next. It’s a pretty cool system!
Thanks everyone! 🙂 I’m very excited about what the future holds for my dancing.
Lamortefille; the swords are balanced for dancing which means there is a point along the sword where the weight can be balanced on a point… like your head. 😉 We use them all the time in dancing; they are not just for show. Pretty much my favorite thing to do is sword dance! Right now I’m trying to budget for some new swords (I need a matched set of two as I do double sword dances sometimes) as all the ‘newbies’ in our troupe went out and got the same sword I have. :p I like to be an individual. 😉
Here is a pic of me in March of 2008 (during the one month of my entire life I had my hair dyed black LOL!) doing a double sword dance. Sorry it’s from the back but my friend was sitting on the wrong side of the tent. 😉
So aside from the SCA my biggest hobby is bellydancing. Yesterday we had a photoshoot at the Fort Worth Water Gardens and already got some of the photos back. Some of them came out great & I thought i would share!
The first one is my favorite. 🙂 I’m very excited as I was just asked to join the Proffesional troupe last week; something I’ve been working towards for years! *happy dance*
sagiaparri wrote:Sorry about that 😳 🙄
I didn’t read in the description that is was supposed to be a surprise. In the next one you might want to put that in BOLD red letters for noobs like myself. :yes:S’ok. 😉 If I bolded everything in the first post that people needed to pay attention to I’d be bolding pretty much the entire thing. 😉 It actually doesn’t say in there that it is supposed to be a surprise; guess I need to add that but we were working under the understanding that everyone knew how this sort of thing worked. My bad & apologies for the confusion.
If anyone else has any suggestions on things I might add or clarify on the first post please let me know! 🙂
