I thought the hyena had the strongest jaws?

Either way, I don’t put much faith in dog bite tests. They have a special tool to measure jaw strength. Basically, they just make the dog bite the tool, and they get a number. This is very flawed. A dog will bite with different strengths depending on its mood, the situation, and even based on individual genetics. It would be similar to saying that people from Iceland have stronger jaw strength than people from India. It’s nearly impossible to test for, and even harder to make a blanket statement on. I dont remember the hyenas number. This test had men riling up the dogs then sicking them on a mans arm while the bite meter was attached to it. You are right, though… it could very well be innacurate. It was enough to convince me that a pits jaw is no stronger than any other dogs, though.

Technically, a hyena is not a canine, not even in the same family. They are close to mongooses & meerkats. Estimates of jaw strength is around 4000psi. Sorry, hyenas are really interesting to me…

Yah, I love that dapple grey!! I wanna know too, how did you do the dapples with the airbush? White over grey, grey over white, avoidance? I’m so close to just saying screw it and getting an airbrush w/ my credit card, seeing your paintjobs isn’t helping my will power!! 😆

I glued her ear tip back on this morning and removed her horn. She still feels wet, so no painting yet.

I think she’ll be ok. She is either going to be black or a very dark gray w/ lavender eyes. If the crack shows up in her ear, she’ll stay with me, otherwise she’ll be up for sale. I’ll post photos as I go to show her progress.

I’m an idiot!! I had her looking not too bad, then I happened to turn her around and I had smudged dark brown all over her other side. A peice of pastel had lodged itself in my hand and I didn’t know it. I couldnt get it all off, so I added some larger spots all over her and I hated it. She looked aweful. So, she met a bowl of acetone. Her eyes came out and some of the black came off her horn, and I broke off the end of her ear!! Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire!

At this point she is drying and I will re-glue her ear tip back on tomorrow. She’ll get a coat of primer and we will go from there. Hopefully I can salvage her, but if not, I’ll have a unicorn I can keep.

I just checked out the list from Italy. Good lord, I can’t beleive they didn’t ban the sheep that these dogs protect too!! A Newfoundland??!! They are rescue dogs for goodness sake! 🙄

Yup, I was terrified! I thought for sure it would be a disaster!! I’m still intimidated by paint!!

*ugh* I just can’t get the darker areas to lighten up enough. I may just darken the mane & tail, complete the hooves and beads and be done with her. I have spent a ton of hours on this peice that will be for sale and I just have to draw the line somewhere. 🙄

Thanks emerald!! I forgot your hubby is an artist. I’m glad you & he like him so much! He was a lot of fun to work on and I’m very happy with the way he came out. I took extra care to be sure he was perfect for you!! Enjoy!

I just gotta add my 2 cents. I haven’t had alot of experience w/ dogs. I do have a golden retriever(I trust her totally, alone, w/ my kids). I also watch alot of Ceasar Milan. The man is amazing. I have learned alot of the ‘problem’ cases are just owner miss managment. People want these large dogs and do not know how to handle them. A lot of these breeds were bred to have a job, working dogs. Mastiffs are by nature guard dogs, pits fought bulls(really two breeds here, American Staffordshire Terriers & Staffordshire Terriers), bla bla bla. Now we get these dogs couped up in the house all day w/ no outlet for thier energy and they express aggression. Don’t even get me started on little dogs!! People think it’s cute when they display protective or aggressive behavoir and really it’s no diferent then a large dog, they just don’t do as much damage. My golden was attatcked by a little pomeranian, thank goodness the dog didn’t jump on my brother in law’s doberman.

And the statement about Golden’s being the next nasty breed, I think that is just because of thier popularity. They can also tend toward the dominant side, so it’s important they know(or any dog for that matter) where they stand in the ‘pack’.

I would love to own a protective dog! I live in the country, way up on a hill and it makes me nervous sometimes to be alone w/ my kids all the time. Not just because we could be vulnerable to burglars, but animals too. We have coyotes, bears, even bobcats here, plus my neighbor never leashes his german shepard. But I don’t own one of these dogs, because I don’t know if I could handle it the proper way. But, I’m a resposible pet owner.

I do agree, there MUST be harder laws for animal abuse. It’s really a catch 22 and in the end the animals suffer for it. I just don’t understand what goes thru people heads. My dog was a stray in LA before she came into the rescue I got her from. Someone shot her with a BB gun! She is the sweetest gentlest soul and someone was cruel to her! I just don’t get people!

    *climbs off soap box*

Thanks for the input, thats exactly what I was thinking. Hopefully it’ll work, I really don’t want to have to start over!!

Thank you! She does look better inthe photos. I dunno, maybe I’m just too critical of my work??

So here are some photos of my latest unicorn. She is supposed to be a perlino, but I messed up BIG TIME w/ the ‘earthy brown’ and made her look bruised instead. I have added a bunch of layers of white and that has helped some. You can tell right behind both ears, on the neck. Her hind end on the display side is messed up, as well her front ‘arm pit’ on the non-display side. The pictures look better then real life. She is also much darker then a true pearlino, but she isn’t done. I’m not sure is I will continue to try to lightener her, or just give her an acetone bath and start over. I hate doing the acetone thing tho because they never get as clean and smooth as when they were new.

    Any constructive criticism?

No 😆 , not until her bruising heals….sorry, I’m embarrased at how aweful she looks. Maybe tomorrow after a few more layers..

I am working on a lavender eyed unicorn. Trying to make her a perlino. I am following Carolyn Smith’s tutorial. My colors are pretty close to hers, but I went WAY to heavey w/ the burnt umber in places. Now my unicorn looks like she’s been beaten to a pulp. The main problems are the neck and shoulder on the display side. I am layering on the light grey now for a few more layers then she states, but I’m hoping this helps tone down those bruised looking areas. Other than those parts, I think she is coming out really well. She has the rusty brown/red mane(darker then I wanted) and socks.

Am I doing the right thing by layer more light grey to try to counter act the bruised yellowy brown look? TIA!

I know, I missed it somewhere….Is it because of the judgemental look I got from her the second I unwrapped her? 😆
