I love the way he had it in a barn beside the house 🙂 you know, with nice old traditional wood doors.
It was like “oh, have you seen my pet?”.
It is still amazing that only one front paw broke int the kilning process. Usually trapped air makes such sculptures nuke. In the case of the paw it was the temperature change in winter which made part of the sculpture freeze.
He really really worked incredibly well, well calculated and aware of the materials properties.
Compared to polymer I feel like working with playdo 😉I wanted to share this long ago already, but me and my brain. While I am at it, John Howe has an exhibit here in Switzerland:
I’m happy I could amaze you with this post just as his exhibit amazed me 🙂
because, on Nambs topic, he is just as awesome in person as his sculpture/work is. Both Daniel Rieser and John Howe.greets

Its been almost two years since I visited Daniel Rieser, creator of the wonderful terra cotta dragons of Dragon Palace.
I have never seen more overwhelming works than his. This is not only for their size and intricate detail but also for the fact that we are talking of terra cotta here. The stuff pots are made of.
His biggest work, King of Power, is currently held in place by ropes, but is said to be able to stand by itself. Made with an internal beehive structure these sculptures support their own weight, but are burned sepparately and lateron “glued” with cement. The details are incredibly smooth. I believe King of Power took 3-4 years (with an additional year of drying).
He used a rooftile burning firm to burn, as there is simply no oven of that size within normal… terms.
Use the people as a size referende:his works are inspired by Giger who is his friend.
Hence the more alien appearance:
Once a year he usually makes an exhibit here in Switzerland (thurgau). … he is Swiss.
There are hardly people in this country who dont call fantasy/surreal/sci-fi shit. (yes I am quoting) I was happy to speak to him two years ago.
Unfortunately not all the dragons are on his homepage. But please do have a look:greets

4 of the books are for sale on deviantart (check the description for the price). Many people asked for them and I decided it was fair to also put a few for sale online and not only at Eurofurence.
One of my favourit books (and fav recommendation ) is
KRABAT by Ottfried Preussler.
I believe it exists in english, even if the original is German.
It is pretty different to all other fantasy books I have so far read and I like it for its “old style”.
It has no classical fantasy touches (swordfighters, knights and… yes… no dragons) and sometimes seems like a longer, dark, fairytale story.
If you can get the original book with the original woodprint illustration (only a few, but I really like them). The story is about a boy named Krabat who gets hired by a miller as a twelfth assistant. The miller knows black magic and every friday he transforms the assistants into 12 ravens and gives them lessons in spells. This black magic has to be paid once a year by selling one soul (one of the assistants) to the devil. The assistants can only be saved if they have a girl who asks them free.
nuff said 🙂

and a detail shot:
and I promise I’ll shut up now 🙂
thanks all 🙂 I will need these for the convention, so when we are both back from our excursions *g* we can chat over a cup o tea on the details of your book 🙂 by then I hope to be a tad better at binding 🙂
here is the lates WIP, “The Eye Of The Beholder” so its name.
still needs detail. The back is still in colorful blue and yellow polymer and looks errr…. weird. Needs blackening.greets

Work in Process, the first five books of a full ten to be. These still need antiqueing and “dirtying” up, AKA, making them old. Sizes are A5 (pages) in smooth dyed parchment and green stone parchment (the dragon) approx 70-80 pages per book, single paper count. 140 if counted as book. The fox one is A6 in size and leather. Gryphon is leather too. I’ll NEVER do leather again. Ever.
These were fully handbound and handdyed and decorated. This was a pile of white paper, cardboard, cloth, polymer and glue when I started. Much work, much fun.
More to come.
For sale at EUROFURENCE in two weeks.

thanks all!
yes, the digital ones were made with a tablet. if else I’d not be sanely talking/typing here now 😉
Mine’s supposed to be touch-sensitive(feels the pressure you put on the tablet pen) in photoshop but I think it simply dislikes that feature or me. Tablets are really cool, especially if you have a good working program 🙂The dragon once done will be a soft sculpture. Actually, an animation figure (eh… I know, he is seriously to big). Doing something that cannot only move without snapping its joints but also hold the average pose and its weight on it is… well, dont try it. I hope it will work when the cotton and feathers and mane are on him. hope… or i worked and cut my flesh on his wires in vain.
the puppet project… AKA the proof that I am somewhere insane.
http://cathuman.com/fall2007/gobo2.jpgaaaamazing!
especially because it is something!
when i read “performance” I was like “ugh… not again”.
My school loves performances and does them as often and as weird as possible. I feel ashame for people who roll and spit out color and dare to call it art(because they have the ego).
When he turned it and I saw what it was I was like OMG it really looks great and with those few vibrant splotches you can do so much.Did anyone else see the purple dragon ? 🙂

Ok I cant really guarantee what I am saying, just adding thoughts… but that looks very painted to me. Like it was painted over with a very fine layer of very strong white. Varnish-esque white. Perhaps by the former owner.
I may be mistaken though. Never seen one IRL but that was my thought.
Or it could be masking fluid. Or lateron used white to correct, a white that has a defect or another property and hence.. remaining either white or getting the cream color over time or exposure to certain lights. Colors do that. I have the weird feeling you cannot remove it.
It looks natural however. On the pictures that is. I kind of like it. Chicken eggs, especially hatching ones are not clean either. OK a dragon has more dignity and cleanlyness than a chicken… hmmm…I’d say, if you wish for a clean color I’d paint it over. Whatever it is seems to have seeped into the plaster. Once its in its in.
Hardcore chemicals make draggie sick rememver 🙂

I don deserve this!
before I run away, here’s one scaley image, a work in process of a piece for a Convention card deck. Diamonds queen.thanx all!
@Basil:
haha 🙂 I will!
Photoshop helped me a lot though because of the brush options, like the moss on the stones but also the fur effects. Its easy. I’ll show ya 🙂
@ dragoness:
he is in a goose egg. I think he’s about 4 inches tall, I cant tell, I already packed him cause someone on deviantart bought him.because I usually dont do digital artwork. I kind of disliked it but decided it was time to work with it again for project BEYOND (animation short movie).
This is a still pending submission to Pathfinder, a totem card deck with contributions of various furry artists. I kind of last minute submitted when I heard they were short on a few cards. I’ve never really done seals before but I always loved the Selkie legends. And there was this series on TV with a seal called Selma.
nuff blabber, here’s the link (big image)http://cathuman.com/fall2007/sealtotem.jpg
here a wip stage:
And also because I was talking about that BEYOND project. I still have free places for people interested in a custom Dreambook. Please read on akeyla.deviantart.com what are the rules. And Basilisk, you are getting one, you don need no apply 😉
