Hmm, our painting styles are not that dissimilar. I have all of my paint colors on hand and switch between them as I paint to create the blends, and then go back over areas where paint needs more coats…especially with metallic paints…which is what this dragon of mine is all in. I find it harder to work with metallics. I prefer solid colors but for certain things metallics are needed and the end result is a bit more flashy and glossy in the scales.
However, whenever I mix paints to get a certain color and know I must stop at some point and leave white areas I will paint the entire necessary parts in that mixed color so I don’t loose it and have to re-mix…I’d never get the same blend twice. The belly of this dragon is a mix of orange, white, and yellow metallics so I did the whole belly in 3 coats, letting it dry between coats as I did another part. THAT, or I use a different paint well that keeps my acrylics wet. If I need to keep paints overnight and I KNOW this beforehand I use this special acrylic paint holder that keeps paints moist overnight in an air-tight tray. VERY useful.
Drybrushing is my arch nemesis…I think it was merely the color combo people didn’t like, because I liked that style of yours as much as the blended ones.
I’d say just alter the auction text if you can, no reason to pull the auction itself. And did I miss this thread…I did notice certain names on ebay that seem to just bump bids up on auctions…but is this a person who just is unlucky and can’t win any or someone that is only bidding to jack the auction rates?
You just gotta get the idea out of ya and keep painting ’til ya can’t paint nomores! That’s my motto.
Oh, and as for time…I usually stay up to early morning hours painting, or wake up early early with my hubby around 5 am-ish…though the latter is mostly true and I’ll stay up until 1 or 3 am to continue a paint job. The longest stretch I did without stopping would probably be 12 hours straight painting, but normally I break it up around 8 hour spots each for better time-keeping. I am painting and doing artwork full-time and I haven’t gotten a new kid’s book job solidified yet for this year, though one may be on the way very soon.
Maybe bronze would be a good horn color? Or copper! Yes maybe copper!
Hahaha! That’s so awesome…go figure! No worries dragon, I know you’re not copyiong me. There are only so many yellow/black/red/orange combos you can do really swimmingly anyway so there’s bound to be some cross-over. I just started laughing seeing that. Wow. But don’t change a thing about your dragon! Keep it the way you were going to paint it…this will be interesting! I am sure the commissioner won’t mind this. It’s just a coincidence.
You know, I LOVE seeing your WIPs Dragon…they are so differently done than the way I work my dragons. I’m curious how you do such great blending work when you go one color layer at a time like that.
Man, I am eagerly awaiting this one!
A teaser I suppose…I quit on this for the day. I should get it done by tomorrow night maybe. Not sure, I’m only 8 hours in at this point.

Should I make the horns and claws silver or gold?Lol, it looks like you two were using the same colors of paints. Other than that it does look awesome, just wish I could see the golden interferance on it. I think it could sell well on EBay.
Dude, I second that! This was my favorite griffin to date when it came down to style, though the colors weren’t my thing. I adore the effects on this antiqing.
Also, I have repainted over gloss and matte coats before for touch-ups and things, and to recolor areas. However, metallics and interferance paints don’t do this very well so you’d almost have to matte coat it first if you wanted to use those atop your current paint job.
Dragon, you’ve been so nice to me and everyone else in the fandom here. You’ve got kitty bills to pay that not many people would do (certain folks who don’t see animals as worth that type of money), so it’s awesome to see you love your cat that much and go all out to help it. You’re amazing as a person and a fellow painter.
Really? See, I was planning to do a grey wolf somewhere down the line months from now but somebody suggested I do it now because they wanted to watch me do it. Normally greys aren’t my thing, kinda like pinks, and it’s not something I’d see someone really desiring a whole lot, from a buyers standpoint, you know? I like the sculpt, don’t get me wrong…it’s far nicer in person…but it’s not something I’d think would be liked as much as others I have done, so it’s cool getting that type of feedback. ‘Course that just tells me you never know what will go over well and what wont, lol.
Oh, I thought you replied to my other post…the kirin trades. I do want one from you eventually, yes definately!
I hope this goes for a good price. You deserve a lot more than you’ve gotten for your posted auctions from what I recall. I hope they don’t have to pull this auction but the colors are differently placed…the BEP old warrior has it’s color set placed differently. I hope it won’t need to be pulled.
I am terribly sorry to hear about your kitty and have been following that thread. If you want to sell my painted piece you have you can feel free if you need to pay the bills. I’ll always be here and can do another for you anytime. My painting skills have improved since then too so it could be better than the original one you got.
Don’t belittle your talent either! Your work is completely amazing and your photographs are also awesome since they can capture the subtlties in your work as well as Nam’s or even Windstone’s photos. That’s just stunning and so lifelike. I so envious of your camera or something I could just roar. But as for the paint jobs I love them both, though the dragon sticks out in my mind. I’d love to own that but know it will go too high for me. It almost looks like it was painted in chrome. You say you painted it flat black first and then did each scale or drybrushed them over lightly? That’s amazing!
