Diatomaceous earth is an excellent suggestion. The other thing we use is Tobasco Sauce. Sprinkle it across the ant path or anywhere they have access to the house and it keeps ’em out. I guess they don’t like the hot peppers in it. Good luck!
Really? Never would have thought of that, and we have extra bottles around here too. That might actually come in handy with keeping the little critters away from the dishwasher and trash can. And thanks for the luck! Hopefully we won’t have a repeat incident tonight.

So far so good. Never found the original nest, but we’ve only seen maybe a dozen ants all afternoon. The interesting thing is that I started talking to our neighbors while I was ant-hunting…turns out they were invaded last week, and that they know of three other families in town (tiny town, under 800 people) who have the same problem right now. I wonder why this year the ants are so determined to get into our houses? Maybe they know something about the coming winter that we don’t…I should check the fuzz levels on the local caterpillars 😯
I just got back from the store with the diatomaceous earth, which my parents are now spreading around the kitchen. I was up until 4 am last night making sure that there still weren’t hundreds of ants coming out of the walls at once. Woke up this morning and there were only about a hundred or so in the kitchen, mostly dead from some drops Dad put out. We got rid of them all before we loosed the dogs. Unfortunately there were carpenter ants in with the other ants…my house is 160 years old, built by a lumber yard, not a good sign!
I’m going to go outside on that side of the house and start looking for ants to follow, see if I can find their first nest somewhere. Dad is also going to try and seal up a small leak on the roof that drips down to that window, being as moisture attracts ants into a house. Luckily this happened before my sisters and I headed back to university and college, at least there are extra hands around to help out.

I’ve heard of it before, but I’d forgotten all about it. Thanks for reminding me! I may be able to get some of the earth into the cracks around the window and into the wall itself, hopefully that will discourage them from sticking around and finding new ways in. We’re also going to go poke around outside in the morning to see if we can find where they’re all coming from.
It’s just starting to get cooler around here, leaves are changing and fall is on the way. I think they were hoping to start a new colony here where it’s warm and safe. First mice, now ants…everything wants to spend winter in my house!
I’m wondering if any of you folks have any tips for this situation. Here’s the story so far:
All summer long there have been ants in our house. Not very many, and not the kind that chew through wooden houses like ours…just regular black garden ants. We made sure there were no food scraps left in the kitchen to attract them and set out a couple poison baits in case, but mostly it was like any other year: an ant here and there, but no big problem. Then tonight my Mom goes into the kitchen and there are hundreds of the damn things swarming out of a couple cracks around a window above the sink! 😯
The wall was black, with workers, winged ants and nurse ants carrying larva with them. Looks like they want to set up shop in our house now. Any ideas on how to keep them out? We don’t want to seal up around the window, because they’re in the walls now and they’d likely just find a new way in somewhere else. We also don’t want to use a lot of sprays and poisons, because this is in the kitchen and we have dogs, one of whom loves to eat ants. We managed to suck a ton of the little critters into a small hand-vac and kill them off, but we don’t want this to keep happening! Any help would be greatly appreciated 😀
Eee…I’ve been waiting all summer to order PYO’s so I could have a shot at painting them by Christmas for friends…but I’m starting to seriously worry that they’ll be sold out long before I get here 😯

I take the stairs all the time at university, despite the fact that there are elevators everywhere. Kids cram into them to go up two or three floors…I take the stairs because I actually get there faster than they do, with a lot less shoving involved. I also like to take walks in the forested area behind campus. Someone asked me why, and I said for the fresh air and exercise. Their response “you’re supposed to go to the gym for that”. Apparently exercise doesn’t exist outside of a gym setting 😕
I was, for about two years…until they went and ruined the site (IMO) with the revamp months back. Now I only log in every once in a blue moon to keep my account from getting deleted, not that I think I’ll ever go back. I was niniel_elfmaiden once upon a time, feel free to friend me, but just know I won’t be around much 😉
I play Subeta pets, at subeta.ws (do not go to Subeta.org…they had issues with a couple ex-staff members hijacking the site). There’s a lot less drama there in general, you actually get to interact with the staff on a daily basis and the artwork/pets/items/avatars are amazing. I recommend it highly to people I meet up with on my random trips to Neo. I’m Arya_of_Evern over there.
The site is pretty much brand new and crashed for a while, so there are probably a lot of bugs to work out. The people running it are Subeta user admins, and they usually get things fixed as quickly as possible…I hope they get things working for you guys
Here are my two, they’re rigged up for the foods I want for each of them, just in case 😛
I got involved with Valenth through Subeta, but so far these two are the only pets I have through them. I already have 10 Subeta pets, including two other Kumoses, so I really didn’t want tons of Valenth pets too!
If there are any other Subetans out there, I play under the username Arya_of_Evern 🙂
I have a couple Kumoses, being as I play Subeta pets. Valenth I can stand being down, but when it crashed it took SubetaHQ with it, and I need it! 😆
My two pets there are out of their tubes, but they’re not adults yet. Ronin will hopefully be Bloodred, Niniel will hopefully be Angelic.
Gah…how dense do you have to be to assume someone wants $20 for hours of painfully tedious work? Makes me wonder if some people just choose to not engage their brains at all.
My current biggest pet peeve…or peeves…are my two younger sisters. Right now I’ve apparently earned myself their scorn…I haven’t the faintest clue how or why, and of course they aren’t going to tell me what’s wrong. They’ll just continue to stop speaking when I enter the room, glare at me and sneer answers to my questions, then whisper intensely the second I leave. They’re also making a big show of being exta-chummy with one another, just so I know they’re really pissed at me.
Sad part is, they’re 21 and 18. Aren’t we a little old for this stupidity? Grr… 👿

I’m another one who has never personally had any sort of business relationship with you, but I’ve been around the forums for a while now and I’ve never heard anything negative about you either. In fact, I was of the impression that you are an amazing person with a lot of friends and a lot of respect from most people here, so I doubt you’re any kind of fraud artist (or maybe you’re just a really, really good one :P)
I’m sorry you have to deal with all this, and I hope it gets fixed soon!
